John Fewkes

Post by JamesH »

The comeback is on, 8th December in Barnsley. Really enjoyed watching this little 'fireball' throwback fight. Hope he's good with whatever weight he comes in at. Never had a great dig, but he made for really good fights. There were all those issues for the Gethin fight, I hope he makes a go of it this time.

Great stuff.

Ian McNeilly first made me aware of Fireball's ability - as soon as I saw him fight I was a fan.

I hope he has rediscovered a passion for the game and isn't just looking for a Christmas earner.

If he could bolster his excellent boxing with fitness and dedication he can still go a long way on the domestic scene.

Ian tipped me off too :TU:

Then, by the end of 2007 John was flying with three great results that year. Then it just fell away... Glad he's having another crack and like you, hope the fitness is there for the comeback.

I was ringside for Gethin vs Fewkes. Whilst no doubt Fewkes had issues , it was a good performance by Gethin.

I spoke to John afterwards and he was pretty jovial about it, I think he'd lost the hunger for it at that point.

I remember a few years back he was supposed to fight John Murray when both were undefeated but the fight fell through. He was up and down the weights a few times. What weights he back at?

Fewkey was knackered. He only had about three rounds in him and he won every one easily. Gethin couldn't touch him. Then John predictably imploded and Gethin took advantage.

Despite a lack of pop, John should have got to Euro level.

Somebody's just asked him if he's fighting Butterbean on facebook ...........
Great kid.
I always thought that Glyn would get a champion from the early Fewkey days - there was him, Ross Burkinshaw John Ibbo etc.

How this goes depends on his weight on his comeback for me. He offset his skills and punch selection by fighting guys at too high a weight. He obviously has ability - beating Watson and Tonchev were excellent wins, sure he had three good ones on the spin including them.
After he lost to Gethin his interest (from the outside) seemed gone. Sure he was fighting at light middle at the end!
If he aims to make a run at lightweight and keeps his weight no higher than 138 when he comes back then great, loads of good fights out there for him. If he comes back higher I'd have concerns

I train in the same gyn as john and he's really knuckled down these last couple of months, he's got a load of talend and he's not back for the money he's back to have a good go, he plans on bringing his weight down bit by bit but he won't be making 140 on his comeback but in the future he's looking at 140-147

They were. If I remember right, it was Watsons first loss and he then stepped up in weight and won the commonweath very soon afterwards. Reid was in good form when Fewkes beat him too, he was only really losing to the top domestic fighters around.

Yeh I'd say for his frame he shouldn't be going over 140 to be honest.

You'll know him better than me Curtis and I respect your views but confirmation that his best aim is 140 and he's even considering 147 leaves me with litte doubt where this will end - he'll never be able to keep big welterweights off at 147 and will get broken down. There is no way in hell he is the same size as you.

Agreed, kind of puts a bit of a dampener on the whole thing for me. If the dedication to get down to the right weight isn't there, then it's a bit of a waste of time.

I was told recently he weighed about 16 stone - can anyone say whether this was true or not?

If that's true (which sounds extreme) he shouldn't be thinking of going anywhere near a ring after a 5/6 stone crash diet!!!!!

John put a lot of weight on when he retired, that's why I said in the future he will be looking to make 140-147 but for his 1st fight back which I don't think will be a tough one, he's just concentrating on getting back into condition and whatever he weighs he weighs, but in the future he is dedicated to bringing his weight down, if he can make 140 he will be very hard to beat, he's got every move in the book and could really surprise a few people, but he knows he needs to get his weight right because I agree if he's up at light middle long term he won't be able to compete at top level, but he knows this he's not daft, I hope he does it he's a top lad so let's see what the future holds

Fair play Curtis but being blunt (and I've enjoyed watching John in the past, well skilled) he hasn't, in my opinion got a prayer of doing anything at title level at 147, and I'm unsure of 140 either. If he was taking this 100% seriously I think he'd be looking at 135 or 140 at most. He shouldn't even get in the ring over 147 in my opinion - he is nowhere near big enough. He doesn't have the punch to hold guys off so needs to be nimble and fit to make the most of his obvious talent. From what I've heard here I don't like the sound of this comeback - no offence meant to John

Excellent little boxer, used to be very impressed with him. Concerned about the weight though. I always thought he looked like he should have been fighting at Light Welter tops.

Nice edition back to the sport.
