Prime Tyson had the total package. His upper body movement was really what made his game, more so than his lower body movement. Mike Tyson and Joe Frazier both really made their serious statements with the use of their upper body movements, rather than focusing completely on leg movements the way you see some other boxers do. Clever torso and head movements proved Tyson a genious of dodging punches when he was under the training of Cus D'Amato and D'Amato's deciples. Tyson's leg movements also made him a literal genious of placement. The Cus D'Amato style focused largely on clever foot positioning to land huge bombs. Even recently (almost 20 years later) trainer Buddy McGirt described Tyson as a positioning masterpiece.

Why the hell would Mike Tyson even WANT to do such a thing, no less actually need to??? The majority of fighters you see "dancing" and "fleetfooting" their way around the ring ala Derrick Gainer, are usually attempting to compensate for their lack of willingness to actually stand and exchange punches with their opponents. That's what seperates actual "fighters" like Tyson, from the "slick evaders" or "boxers" like Larry Donald, and Chris Byrd. To much foot movement appears cowardly to the people viewing the fight. People want to see a real fight, not a game.shyguy wrote:Prime tyson had great foot positioning but could he of moved as quickly dancing around the ring as greg page or chris byrd ? .

In many cases Ali's foot work was a sure fire diversionary tactic that allowed him to do things like standing in corners and doin the rope-a-dope. It was very unique and also effective in many cases, but appeared as exactly what it was, a diversion from standing and trading shots with a legitimate opponent. That's the precise reason why a guy like Ali wouldnt last 5 minutes with a guy like Mike Tyson outside a boxing ring. I dont care how many skeptics want to doubt that statement. There'd be nowhere to fleetfoot your way to, and no ring ropes to bounce around on and pat your opponent on the head. The real "fighter" beats the "real stylistic boxer" on the streets any day, and those type of guys are the ones that really get my respect in the sport. Fighters and boxers are totally different, and most of my favorite guys in the past were boxing's "fighters". The guys that have had the most success in the sport were the guys that have been able to to find a fair balance between fighting and also boxing. Those guys (like current heavyweight champ Klitschko) are very fun to watch.

I disagree. Tyson was unable to fight on the backfoot, so how was he the TOTAL package?mr cool breeze wrote:Prime Tyson had the total package..
tyson fought his way and that way was coming forward and stalking his victim the man never needed to dance he was pure agression. in my opinion there is not a heavyweight past or present that would of lived with him when he was at his peak. the guy was the most devastating dangerous man to put on a pair of gloves

I hope no man would have LIVED with him. However, there were a few who in their prime would have given him a boxing lesson.rodders wrote:tyson fought his way and that way was coming forward and stalking his victim the man never needed to dance he was pure agression. in my opinion there is not a heavyweight past or present that would of lived with him when he was at his peak. the guy was the most devastating dangerous man to put on a pair of gloves

Tyson was a quick handed out and out puncher.shyguy wrote:Did prime tyson have the feet to be fleetfooted to dance around on his toes as quick as greg page or chris byrd ? .
You may as well ask if Ray Robinson was a one dimensional slugger.
