Clip of Ricky in the gym

Post by Wake up call »

There's not much footage doing the rounds of Ricky working out so here is a clip of him sharpening up with Bob Shannon.

Never seen this method before. Has any other fighters/trainers used this? How effective is it?

Must admit I was thinking much the same thing, though to be fair there is a bit towards the end and it's only one drill, so we shouldn't read too much into it.

And when he does move his head, he drops his hands.

But as deserter says its just one drill, maybe they weren't looking for head movement stuff from it.

Bob Shannon seems pretty pleased with Hatton doing the drill. Shannon looks like the cat who got the cream working with Ricky.

i for one am not taken in by this 'ricky' comeback gravy train, the boy peaked years ago and does not need to ruin his legacy by trying to aspire to the same heights again. good luck ricky but its gonna end in tears, i think brook would rip his head off!

I don't think the drills aim was head movement. The aim of the drill was to hit the rod in time with bob shannon swinging it. If you can find me a boxer who can move his feet.... and his head..... whilst punching in combination on a piece of pipe insulation I'll be impressed.

Kahut aka 'the solicitor without a defence' can do all of that whilst jumping rope.

You r right granted, but obv if we can all see that's what Ricky should b working on, then maybe their time would b better spent maybe? I was more concerned with the low hands tbh, surely by now he must know to raise them a little? It's gona b two soft wins and then devastatingly ko'd isn't it?

Senchenko is not a soft opponent.

He's not as strong as Ricky likes to think either tho. He's older than Ricky and totally befuddled by the first genuine fighter he faced. Ok maybe I shouldn't have said soft, carefully selected would have been a better term. Either way, it's ending the same.

Don't get me wrong I like Ricky but hes always been a little deluded with his abilities, achievements and level of opponents. Urango, collazo....blatantly selected for their paper trinkets. Dont get me started on maussa. Castillo smaller plus shot. Pac was selected cos at the time he was considered a tiny little lightweight that was criticised for fighting David Diaz, the Oscar win was viewed by lots as a result of shoddy weight making and catching him at the right time. Pac wasn't really viewed as a monster til after the cotto/Hatton results. Always thought Ricky assumed he was gona get to bully around a little fella, but he came well and truly unstuck.

That is a ridiculous assertion... he'd clearly finish both via early round KO's!

Ricky even talked like he was gonna bully PAC. All he went on about before hand was that he was a "natural" light welterweight and Manny wouldn't be able to handle his rough stuff. Anyone who can fight on the inside will destroy the clutcher.

Tbf to Hatton most people believed he would have he strength advantage in the match up. What most people didn't know was that Hatton would come to the weigh in looking like he'd trained in a concentration camp. By the time of ring walk he looked like a bone-dry weary man heading to his execution even his Golden Boy 'pals' looked like they knew what was coming.
Hatton says himself he was getting a drubbing in sparring and there was nothing left in the tank.
All In all a complete debacle that made him plenty of dough but put him in a bad place mentally for a few years

Sounds like I'm knocking Ricky when I'm not, I genuinely like him, but all this " only stopped by the top two p4p" stuff annoys me. Only cos he took the path of least resistance to those mega paydays. If he'd have fought the likes of Judah, cotto, Mitchell, corales, gatti then he MAY well have lost to a few more. It's easy to knock witter now, but let's be honest they wanted no part of him. Even post mayweather when it was a natural fight to have with witter having the wbc. In his prime junior was very dangerous and potentially all wrong for rick. He talked all the warrior stuff but picked his very battles carefully.

Lazcano can be added to my initial list of careful opponents as well. Brought his name didn't they?

If Ricky had fought all those he may well have had other losses but not many fighters turn the spotlight onto the ones they didn't face in their careers, it's far easier to say he was beat by the two best at the time. p4p whatever. After the loss against Mayweather Ricky needed a straight forward one which Witter certainly wasn't for anyone.
Witter fought Bradley the same month as Lazcano and lost his title, they both fought again the same month against Paulie Malignaggi and Hugo Castro.
A stinker against Witter wouldn't have secured Pacquaio which in turn would have saved Hatton from a drubbing. He shoud've taken it!

Castillo was NOT considered shot at the time he signed to fight Ricky. The fight was already agreed in principle BEFORE he fought Ngoudjo. Two fights before that he had his career best win over Castillo and the fight before Ngougdjo he looked pretty impressive dominating the decent Reyes.

I thought he did enough against Ngoudjo - but he did look poor. At the time he cited a lack of motivation and I think there was nothing in his previous performances to suggest that he couldn't get it right against Hatton.

He was still in many people's P4P top ten when he stepped into the ring to face Hatton. But after Hatton won, the nay sayers were describing him as completely shot for years.
