Re: australian and canadian boxing?
You have to look at it in perspective, there are probably less than 80 profesional boxers in Aust across all weight divisions , so they don't do too bad considering the lack of opponets and sparring that most Aussies have .
Re: australian and canadian boxing?
i look to see how adam hollioake has got on, look to see if MTG has fought again..thats about it. the rest are pants (excluding katsidis)

Re: australian and canadian boxing?
Hey!
As an Australian living in Canada I'm deeply offended!!
Not really
Australia goes alright considering the small population and boxing is behind pretty much most other sports in terms of coverage and money, but even now we have some good active fighters like Geale, Dib, Katsidis, Tomlinson, Green, Mundine, Soliman, Pitt,. The biggest problem here is our prospects are bought along far to slowly in most cases, as there isn't enough money to get decent fighters out here to help them develop so they end up feasting on undersized Thai taxi drivers, pick up a regional title, get a ranking, then get fed to far better guys in Europe of America and get destroyed. Rinse and repeat.
Not to sure about Canadian boxing, but there dosent seem to be a great deal to get excited about. I think MMA is bigger here, well at least it's in the papers more anyway

Given how the Aussies like to portray themselves as rough and ready tough blokes it is surprising they don't produce many decent fighters.
Guess its their famous ability to chat hot air!

Re: australian and canadian boxing?
Australia has a low population, most people are more interested in the mining boom giving up athletic dreams to become engineers. not much point working shit hard just too get beat up for a small amount of cash when you can chase the millionaire mining dream.

22 mill isn't exactly that low a population. Wales produce much better fighters than Australia do and they have a tiny population!

Re: australian and canadian boxing?
Australia has a huge tradition of boxing, has a city named after a boxer - how many countries can boast the same? One of the oldest national titles in world boxing and when they have a decent prospect - bring over decent opposition because they believe that the fans deserve value for money match ups which isn't like here where everyone seems to think the boxer needs to learn on the back of the fans ticket money by fighting journeymen with 80% + losing records.
When they thought Alex Leapai was approaching world class, they brought over Travis Walker, Owen Beck and Kevin Johnson over to Australia to fight him - do you think David Price will be facing that cailbre anytime soon?

Why are the generally so shite at it then?
For a nation who pride themselves on their sporting prowess and fancy themselves a bit in the toughness stakes they give a poor showing when it comes to the noble art.

They aren't.
They have half of the population of the UK, thus half of the boxers.
Their pedigree and history is up there with us and the Americans. You obviously
know next to nothing about Australian boxing or the history.
And for the size of the population and the amount of boxers they do
have, hold their own pretty well. What you don't tend to get over there
are crappy mismatches - most of the time, most 6-8 round fights are well
matched - unlike here where some guy who has 10 wins in 200 fights will
always get work.

Re: australian and canadian boxing?
I get it FG, you like Australia!!!
Your comparison regarding Price and Leapai, well I'm almost certain it won't take David 8 years as a pro to face someone of Johnson's standing!
Always found it strange that for such a sport loving nation they don't turn out many top class fighters. Well, not enough given their reputation for sport and self styled toughness ( little Aussie battlers! )

It's not that I like Australia, I know enough about Australian boxing to know it is not shit nor is the history of it. As for Price, don't bet on it!lillywhite14 wrote:I get it FG, you like Australia!!!

Re: australian and canadian boxing?
Australia has had some good fighters but the cap between the good fighters & bottom is big, because no one wants to be a boxer, there is no money in it, not enough public interest not enough people watch it, there is also not enough good trainers, there are plenty of people in Australia that know there stuff, but they don't envoled in the sport.

An active fighter according to boxrec can be someone who has fought just once in the past year.-KOKid- wrote:coneye wrote:You have to look at it in perspective, there are probably less than 80 profesional boxers in Aust across all weight divisions , so they don't do too bad considering the lack of opponets and sparring that most Aussies have .

Aussies tend to take part in a wider range of sports as well, they're a bit like the yanks in the sense they make their own sports up like that famous V8 car race were loads of Holden and Ford fans have a mass brawl and they even have a special caution flag for when a kangaroo gets on the track, then they have that football where they all wear ultra-tight vests and shorts and prance around like a bunch of nonces. Then they've got all the other sports like football, Rugby, Tennis, Cricket amongst others, I think the native sports are more popular though.
