banjo
it would have been a yawn fest...probably going the way of banjo/currie. Pearce would have been kept at arms length by Banjo's occasional prodding jab and then tied up inside. Dave would have won the crowd by trying to make a fight of it but Banjo would have edged a close verdict and a forgettable fight. :(
I can see Pearce winning this. 8) .. he'd be too busy
for Banjo and would do enough work before been tied up :x :x :x to get the verdict. Banjo had quite a bit of talent
but seemed to be one of these Heavies with an attitude problem
:x :x
alla Bugner, Williams, etc..
.. Banjo could throw a few punches and look quite dangerous
then he'd go back into his shell and not do anything for another 3 rounds!....
Yes, its interesting to know that Pearce went into the Rodriguez Euro bout with a injured hand and couldn't do any sparring or bag work in the training for the fight..... yet he still almost won.mercman wrote:I know what you mean about Banjo's attitude. He clearly had the tools to achieve much more in his career than he did. I remember seeing his second fight against Hughroy Currie: a real mauling affair. There was more fighting in the crowd among the rival supporters than in the ring! Banjo really didn't do himself justice, he should have beaten Currie fairly handily.
Like Silkov, on balance, I fancy Pearce to win this one. I fancy the Welshman to take it to Banjo and, although it would be close, I think Pearce's more attacking approach might just win it.

He would have KO’d him just as he did in sparring! Ask Andy Gerrard 1 Rd
Never saw him again... by all accounts.
Al Syben, Ishaq Hussain, and Huge Larry McDonald are examples of what Pearce did to Big ponderous men in his prime at 23.

Pearce vs Horace Notice would have been more interesting and probably would have happened had the board not revoked David's licence. Every time I hear Banjo's name mentioned I immediately think of that toilet of a bout he had with Hughroy Currie for the British title

Why did Pearce take a break from 84 to 1990?
Re: David Pearce v Funso Banjo. What if?
I agree 100%... Pearce fought anyone and everyone on his way to the Welsh, British and European Heavyweight title fights, Pearce was very unfortunate the Cruiserweight division was not active in the UK also. Horace notice and Frank Bruno against David ‘Bomber’ Pearce would have captured Britain’s imagination at the time!
The cartel put a stop to that
This was a great shame, he is finallly getting his recognition.

Re: David Pearce v Funso Banjo. What if?
He was born with an abnormality of the ventricular. He fought with it his whole career, the 90’s fight was interesting as Pearce travelled with Wally his father and trainer by sea to America and then a greyhound across the country to Chicago for 3 days training before fighting.
He was poorly managed at that point, and to be fair did well considering he had been out of the ring for 6 1/2 years with no training.
Pearce did however spar Lennox Lewis in 1992 filmed by Eric Guy, and fought twice more in beaconsfield California in 1994, winning by KO twice and against a former World Champion. Although he didn’t get the WBA Cruiserweight title shot he signed for in 1984, his career did end up on a sort of high.
He was loved by the people of Newport, and all other the country for his charming persona and kindness to all who met him.
He will now be honoured with a statue.
