worst nights in british boxing ?
I almost threw my programme into the ring when unbeaten Frank Bruno was splattered in the last round by Bonecrusher Smith at the Wembley Arena. Middleweight prospect Mark Kaylor had been destroyed earlier by Lt middle American Buster Drayton....and Heavyweight Quarless was dispatched in 1 round by Canadian Mark Lee (they'd previously gone the distance)------ i think it was called Black Friday by the press.... :x

I recall watching Herol Graham and Julian Jackson and two British announcers were calling the bout as Graham was easily out boxing Jackson when that right hand of Jackson's all of a sudden ended the bout...one of the announcers was like ...."OH NOOOOOO!"
I haven't seen the film, but I've read a bit about Bruce Woodcock getting stopped in four rounds by old Lee Savold, which was a big disappointment and upset for the Brits!

If you're just going by worst nights as in when British boxers have been upset/defeated then Bruno vs Smith is one... also Honeyghan vs Vaca 1 and Minter vs Hagler with the after fight riot wasn't the best of times.
But really the worst nights were probably when fighters were injured such as Eubank vs Watson 2 or Benn vs Mcclellen... both were high profile fights and the tragic results finished boxing as a main stream sport over here really.....

worst nights
I mean the worst overall defeats on one bill. In Bruno and Kaylor our two best prospects at Heavyweight and Middleweight were beaten on the same bill !!!
Re: worst nights
I see what you mean. The funny thing about that night is that looking back those defeats were not really that bad as Drayton and Smith both proved themselves very dangerous at worldclass and each picked up world titles later on. Drayton Koed Jimmy Cable the light-middle champ too I remember. I remember thinking it was a dangerous fight for Kaylor when I heard he was facing Drayton as I'd seen him ko Cable in a round!.funso banjo baby wrote:I mean the worst overall defeats on one bill. Benn v McLellan
One of the best and worst nights in British boxing (if thats possible) all at once.
Superb fight, had everything but the aftermath is not why we all love the sport.

legend
when naz was robbed of his p4p number one spot and was outboxed by barrera. he was robbed by a dumb corner who couldnt handle an instinctive fighter. they gave him a double dose and an overdose about the doctrine of boxing. they should have let him be and focused on getting him in good shape and making sure he could throw at leats 80 punches a round. not 30-40. if he stayed busy and mixed it up, he could have won by KO. if he made barrera fight and won by KO, he would have been p4p and a legend. what the fornicate was he doing running around tapping with jabs? wtf did steward teach him? suarez is just a bitch!
the best night for british boxing would have to be when turpin upset sugar ray. more modern examples would be hunegan beating curry and hatton beating tszyu, as well as naz beating the americans in their own backyards. naz v kelly got me interested in boxing, again!

Barry, I have seen the film (Woodcock vs Savold). Bruce was "well" ahead on points, as well as 3 other Woodcock bouts - Mills vs Woodcock I & II, Lesnevich vs Woodcock...
Bruce Woodcock was the 'business' he was a basic 'stand-up' boxer with a one-two punching pattern and a Deadly right hand KO punch!
Henry Cooper and Don Cockell before him and of course Lennox Lewis get "much" praise and recognition, but Bruce Woodcock "just" MIGHT have been that long awaited British "King of the Bigmen!"
He was definatly WASTED, rushed along and ruined! Not only a shame for Bruce but British Boxing... His book "Two Fists and a Fortune" is excellent.
Savold went on to tackle Joe Louis, a 'sad' night for British Boxing!
