Tony Tucker vs Rocky Marciano

Post by Controversial »

Tucker a big, fast heavyweight with decent power and good chin, how do you think Rocky would have faired against him?

Rocky by decision.
I think he'd make Tucker go into survival mode like Tyson did.

I cant see Tucker winning. Tucker could be lazy for all his talent and bravery.

I think Marciano wears him down into survival mode around the 7th or 8th but wins on points

I think Tucker does get a little underestimated these days (but then all the 80s Heavyweight champions do, unless there surname is Tyson).

But there's NO WAY would Tucker go 12 rounds with Marciano - and Tucker beating him is a concept that I can't envision.

Tucker went 12 rounds with Tyson and Lewis, why shouldnt he go 12 with Marciano as well?

15 would be harder for him, though.

Since neither Rock nor Tucker ever fought a 20 rounder, that's irrelevant.
They both did, however, fight bouts scheduled for 15, so either 12 or 15 would be a fair question.

I don't recall Crease ever predicting another fighter to last the distance with Rock.

rover, this is an imaginary scenario. why are you complaining about one imaginary scenario that will never come to pass while positing an equally impossible one of your own? if you can pit tony tucker against rocky marciano - you have the absolute right to designate as many number of rounds as you like......free your mind

Neither of them fought a 20 rounder. Those have been gone since long before Marciano came along, much less Tucker.
You might as well discuss what would happen with 2-minute rounds.

Tucker lasted 12 rounds against a prime Mike Tyson, eight of those rounds with a broken hand. I think he makes the distance against Rocky in what would be a highly competitive fight that could be scored either way.

I think people are underestimating the impact size would have in this matchup. Marciano and Tyson share the same height, but Rocky was the smaller, lighter (and tougher) man. He would be outweighed by 35 pounds and would give away 7 inches in height and 15 inches in reach against Tucker.

If it's a 15 round fight I'd give Rocky a better chance of stopping Tucker late or pulling away in the championship rounds and taking a close but clear decision.

Also: it's very difficult to talk about Marciano with people. Either he'd crush anyone put against him with ease in a handful of minutes (& the Don Cockell fight never happened) or he'd be blown out the water by a much bigger dude.

I agree with jezzamundo that the size thing shouldn't be discounted here, but I don't think TT is the big unit to get it done. Too passive, too cautious, too... Meh. Not a bad fighter but at the top flight... Meh. All the tools, not enough inside him, like.

Style wise, Tucker is a complete nightmare for Marciano. I think it's a long hard night for Rocky, but I don't see Tucker throwing enough punches to beat The Rock.

Marciano by a close decision after hitting the floor twice.

Marciano never fought anyone as big as Tucker, did he? Certainly not anyone with a good jab and good feet as well. There's no question he could find his way to the inside some of the time, that he had the punch to take out almost anyone if he caught them right, and that he could soak up a lot of punishment, but someone with Tucker's size and talent should be able to keep him at distance for long periods. I'd have thought a competitive fight which could go either way.

No not close. The sizes of the best fighters on Marciano's record are -

Roland LaStarza (6ft and 13 stone)
Rex Layne (6ft 1" and 13 stone 2 lbs)
Joe Louis (6ft 2" and 15 stone 3 lbs)
Harry Matthews (under 6ft and 12 stone 8 lbs)
Jersey Joe Walcott (6ft and 14 stone)
Ezzard Charles (6ft and 13st 2 lbs and 13st 8 lbs in rematch)
Archie Moore (5ft 11in and 13 stone 4 lbs)
