I agree relaxation and mental state have a huge bearing, but surely there's one thing being able to move around and survive, and a total other fighting at the level of a few fighters being discussed here ie Carl Froch etc. If u r in that defensive mindset of course u r gonna have a bit held back as opposed to the guy putting bad intentions into everything. Hes gona need that pace and explosiveness that a journeyman doesnt. Smoking must have a negative effect at a high level surely. When smokers say "it never harmed my fitness" I always think "how do u know?" when the damage is already done its not like u could go back and see how fit u could have been if u had never smoked.

But anyway, what do I know ur the pro so full respect. :salut: I'm just an ex smoker that bitter cos i still have a morning cough ten years after quitting. :witzend:

What I was trying to get across is that being able to pace yourself better than a less experienced fighter doesn't really have much to do with fitness levels, it's more a case of experience, ring craft and intelligence. But obv still an impressive thing to do, particularly if u smoke twenty a day. Being able to slow a fight down is a great skill.

Yeh, that was a good post. I suppose I can only see from my point of view. The fitness & boxing level of fighters like Carl & many others I only think of in my dreams. I've done a hell of a lot more as a journeyman than I ever would've trying to be a winning fighter.would I have boxed boys & on the shows I have in the other corner? No. Big no. I've been on shows many, many could only dream.i done what suited me & am very thankful of it

Yeah, definite respect to you Johnny out there doing this stuff for real! I imagine you catch a few of these 'flying machines' out by kind of Ali 'rope-a-doping' them. Letting the inexperienced pro's with shit loads of ambition and under that kind of self-imposed pressure go off at a hundred miles an hour and burn out after 3 rounds. Amazing what you do - keep it up and best of luck!

Thank you very much sir! I had the dream at the start of having 100 fights and I'm not not far off. I'm definitely going to walk away if and when I get there. It's getting harder for me but I still do a job.the plan is too stand my ground a bit more & try to finish with a couple more wins. It's not major money which is why, when you have fights lined up up for a few weeks.its not been in my interests to have wars and get cut, it costs my family our wages.some just don't understand things from my point of view.i have got the stomach for a fight but only when it's in my best interests.many of these kids are to good to beat but I always try to put on a show.ive never been totally negative.and most aren't left feeling shortchanged.you can't please everyone. & like it or not. Prospects don't want to risk their o's facing each other.where I come in

dont for 1 second think i was demeaning what u do my friend. Sometimes i think its even more gallant/admirable getting in there when u know u arent as fit as u could be, always in their backyards, when the other lads much younger and a hot prospect with all the cards stacked in his favour. No1 in their right mind would blame you for tucking up and playing it safe once in a while (to even have the ability to do that is impressive). We all know journeys are the true hard men of the game.

I don't think that sir & thanks. I have seen quite a few who post on here knocking us tho.also quite a few j men are losing their licence.without us there will be loads of foreign tomato cans coming over and staying down after taking 1 good shot.id like it if prospects faced each other too but they don't and never will.we are needed!

I used to train with a Filipino bloke named Arnel Barrotillo, he fought Pacman and also fought for two world titles he use to get on the drink & smoke cigarettes. I heard Pacman don't mind a drink and smoke, I said to Arnel that I heard Pacman drinks & smokes, he said all Filipino fighters drink & smoke.

I smoked weed daily and trained hard for years (throughout my 20's) and I reckon I'd have held my own in terms of fitness with most in the gym (in a non-boxing gym.......... cuz I dough like people hitting me)
with the utmost respect, i think theres a big difference between "boxing fit" and your average joe down fitness first. Certainly at pro level.
Agreed, but we were talking about how smoking affects fitness.

I think the effects of smoking on your fitness levels are exaggerated

Personally - as someone who is smoking now and doesn't when in fight mode - they are not
It's impossible for me to be fight enough to fight when smoking
But that's just me

I was reading an article the other day and they mentioned a boxer called Al Andrews, a very tough journyman in the 1950's, he used to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day, but on the day of thefight he would cut down to 'just' half a pack.

When he fought Gil Turner he quit smoking for a month beforehand, and knocked the welter contender Turner out in the 3rd round. seeing as he had only 2 ko's in 29 wins before this it was some shock.
In the post fight celebrations he had a cigarette and was hooked again, he said "If it hadn't been for cigarettes, I could've become champion of the world."

Someone once told me that Tim Henman smoked 10 a day throughout his career. (I'm aware that he wasn't a boxer, before someone points it out!)
