i dont think jersey joe would knockdown dempsey.. dempsey was tough and had an excellent chin.. i think this is a great matchup, i see dempsey coming out strong early, swarming jersey joe and looking to drop that devistating left hook of his... as long as hes careful and doesnt get hit with one himself, i see dempsey winning this fight in the 4-5 round.
Walcott hit hard enough with either the hook or the right to knock any HW down or out. But Dempsey wasn't that easy to hit clean; Tunney said that in all the rounds they fought he never saw Dempsey's chin much lwess hit him on it. Dempsey's style- swarming and relentless- doesn't leave much time or space for cute and slick so Dempsey by ko in the 8th - 12th area
Bad style for Dempsey, but I think he'd manage to put enough pressure on Walcott to corner him or catch him on the ropes and get the KO. Dempsey would not win on points though, that's for sure.
Despite Dempsey knocking down Walcott in the 7th, Walcott dominates the fight. Dempsey keeps moving forward. In the 12th, way behind on points, Dempsey starts hitting low. He has a point taken away. In the 13 Walcott scores a flash knock down. Toward the end of the fight, Dempsey panics and start lungeing pathetically, Walcott tatering him with jabs and hooks. Before the 15th Dempsey asks Doc Kearns if there's anything he can stick in his gloves, like a horse shoe. Kearns says he's got to win this one the old fashioned way with more low blows. Dempsey tries this but only suceeds in being penalized another point. Walcott gets the unanimous decision.
There is no doubt in my mind that Walcott could and probably would figure a way to drop Dempsey. I'm just as sure that Dempsey would utlimately win this fight.
