Hector "Macho" Camacho Shot in Puerto Rico

Post by Boxingcutsman »

I've just heard the sad news that Hector "Macho" Camacho has been shot in the neck & face & seriously wounded in a apparent drive-by in his home town, another man with him was killed instantly. The 50 yr old Puerto Rican sensation moved up through the ranks winning numerous world titles in 3 weight divisions. Standing at only 5ft 6" - 5ft 7" tall he fought from super-featherweight to super-middleweight, and had a amazing 30yr professional fight career making his debut in 1980 & amazingly having his last fight in 2010, having 88 fights & only losing 6, to the likes of greats such has, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez, he was also never stopped in his career, some of his great wins include Roberto Duran Twice & sensationally a Knockout over Sugar Ray Leonard in a amazing and long career. Unfortunately he is now fighting the biggest fight of his life. My thoughts & Prayers are with him & his family.

Hope he pulls through - he was a very good, very fast champion in his prime and he had some pop in his punches too. He was a marmite fighter but could play the crowd really well. Hope he gets better and takes inspiration from ex foe Vinny Pazienza who is a medical marvel.

according to sky sports he could be left paralysed but doesn't sound life threatening.

The current scene thread is not reporting the same thing, sadly.

It looks like we have another Emmanuel Steward situation arising with the twitter posts - lets pray for not the same outcome.

The same source that confirmed Steward to me is saying the same here.

I'll see if I can double check.

Had a heart attack a few hours ago.

Life support may be removed in a few hours if no further sign of life.

Camacho was always a loose cannon. He was a very talanted boxer, but his wild lifestyle got in the way.

I agree - the man had no brakes at all, he was brilliant in the mid to late 80's though; the trouble is there's a long time after a boxing career has finished and if you're not making tons of money (for other people) then your mistakes are not looked on kindly or covered up. If he's still in with a chance I hope he makes it :salut:

I once heard a story that his trainer was so frustrated about Hector's partying during training camp that he confiscated all his clothes so he couldn't go out.
Undetered he still went out partying....naked!

Watching Camacho on itv's world of sport as a kid was one of the main reasons i became a boxing fan.

Hector Camacho was an incredible talent in the early 1980's, and even though he was a multi-weight champion he never made the most of his career.

I always thought he had the beating of chavez had they boxed 5-6 years earlier.
I remember seeing him v Boza Edwards and was amazed that a man could be so fast; he hit hard then as well, Boza was tough but got dropped and hurt. RIP Macho Camacho.

Seems drugs were the reason here. The other guy with Camacho was also shot dead and had 9 bags of cocaine in his possession. Hectors life support machine was turned off Saturday
