Def Murray for me
Re: Nicola Adams on SPOTY shortlist
I feel much deserved, it is the top of the tree in terms of Women's boxing (both Amateur or pro I feel). You can always argue that winning a world proffesional title (proper one) is a better achievement than an Olympic Gold medal for the men, not so much for the Women - the standard in the amateurs is largely better than in the pro's.
Some unlucky athletes not making the shortlist this year.... I thought Poulter might have got in for his Ryder Cup Heroics.

Wiggins by a mile.
Brilliant for boxing's profile though, especially women's boxing - and Team GB, etc.

What Andy Murray did this year should never be underestimated.
Olympic Gold and a Grand Slam in the greatest era the game has ever seen

Yeah, but you're biased being a Junior tennis legend in the north eastWrists wrote:What Andy Murray did this year should never be underestimated.

Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic achievement and he'd be top of the tree in almost any other year. But Wiggo's season has been something else.
Farah is worth a small interest at 9/2, actually. He certainly lit up the sporting world for a while.

I like Wiggins
I just think to win slams in an era with Nadal, Federer and Djokovic is some achievement

should be murray
got him@25/1 before us open as i knew hed win the open. idiot should have backed him outright for open@5/1 and top 3 finish in spoty@10/1 which would have been a banker

It is mate, absolutely. But there are four every year - though winning the Olympics too really adds to it.Wrists wrote:I like Wiggins

Le Tour is something else altogether and is the greatest sporting achievement there is, IMO, especially when you add in that we don't really have that cycling culture in comparison to on the continent.
Re: Nicola Adams on SPOTY shortlist
I would have said Wiggins would have been an absolute banker in normal circumstances - a unique, historic year for a Brit in his chosen sport......however, perhaps the Armstrong scandal and the subsequent negative effect it has had on cycling as a sport may spoil his chances?
Just playing devil's advocate.....
I always stay loyal to my sports (cricket, boxing, football) if/when voting for SPOTY, no matter what their achievements! So Nicola will be getting my support.

x 2. I don't think people realise how fkin difficult it is to complete a stage in the tour, let alone win the thing.dondada wrote:It is mate, absolutely. But there are four every year - though winning the Olympics too really adds to it.Wrists wrote:I like Wiggins

She doesn't really deserve to win though, does she?Jack B wrote:I always stay loyal to my sports (cricket, boxing, football) if/when voting for SPOTY, no matter what their achievements! So Nicola will be getting my support.

Re: Nicola Adams on SPOTY shortlist
There's a case for any of them winning it, Murrays wins were outstanding, but not sure he should win any award with 'personality' on it.
Adams has alot of charisma but won't win , great to see her up there on her own merits.

Re: Nicola Adams on SPOTY shortlist
No, you're probably right, there are better candidates. But that's just me being completely blinkered towards the sports I'm passionate about.Horse wrote:She doesn't really deserve to win though, does she?Jack B wrote:I always stay loyal to my sports (cricket, boxing, football) if/when voting for SPOTY, no matter what their achievements! Re: Nicola Adams on SPOTY shortlist
Whilst it was a great achievement winning gold at the games, I don't think she should win it as in fairness she only boxed 3 times. You can't compare that to what Wiggins achieved. However, it is a 'personality' award and her smile and what she has done for female amateur boxing is immeasurable.
Re: Nicola Adams on SPOTY shortlist
Ah is this that ex-factor type show for sportsmen/women?
What do they mean by personality? As in cheeky chappy joking about laddy? Can't be that surely as complete dullards like Ryan Giggs, Joe Calzaghe and Damon Hill have won it.
I'll be rooting for Murray even if he is a boring sod, not really a fan of tennis but I'm clued up enough to know that winning a Grand Slam in the current era is a bloody great achievement.

Re: Nicola Adams on SPOTY shortlist
Yeah it's an utter misnomer. There's no reason not to call it 'Sports star of the year' and just make it clear it's a friggen achievement award and always has been.banjo wrote:Ah is this that ex-factor type show for sportsmen/women?

Putting people like Katharine Grainger on there is about as useful as a dehumidifier in a steam room, why don't they just get a focused shortlist together with people who have a chance.

Wiggo deserves it for his Tour win alone.
Re: Nicola Adams on SPOTY shortlist
Murray should have a real chance with his fantastic sporting achievements this year.
If it is Sports 'personality' though he will really struggle.
