Re: Flintoff fight - who has it wrong?
I tend to agree I think its proberly a 'fixed' fight as the yank is not going to to be the next Mike tyson so losing wont effect him much. I think the fight will go the 4 rounds and Flintoff get the nod on points.
Saw the second part of the docu last night and with only 21 days beofr ethe fight Flintoff doesnt look that good in sparring or throwing punches. He never threw any body shots and never made combos, I think on the night he will stick to the head and be a scrappy fight. Im not expecting too much however he might prove us all wrong and show good craft work. At the end of the day its only reality tv so Flitoff isnt going to a threat to the Brits. Im sure a Brit could have done with the payday though someone who also can read scripts

Re: Flintoff fight - who has it wrong?
Flintoff has gone from a beer-swilling (albeit naturally gifted) cricketer to someone happy to punish his body and go through a rigorous training regime in order to compete in a different sport.
It makes no sense to me.
I think he'll get stopped after a Fury-like few rounds... a lot of holding and wanging away

Re: Flintoff fight - who has it wrong?
Pitching the opponent would have been tough because even a Brit with a 0-5 record or something has more experience than Freddie, and I feel this comes down to how used to being punched in the face you are. Playing a non-contact sport for 20 years and changing it to the hardest available one on a whim isn't going to be conducive to success. This Dawson guy will probably turn out to be terrible but he's also risen from the streets and has had boxing on the mind from a young age. That should make the difference, but who the hell knows.mimmy123 wrote:I tend to agree I think its proberly a 'fixed' fight as the yank is not going to to be the next Mike tyson so losing wont effect him much. The one thing I REALLY don't expect is for it to go the distance. If not from the first bell, at some point, someone will start slugging and Flintoff will surely get tired with the extra nervous energy he must have.

Re: Flintoff fight - who has it wrong?
Not being funny guys but there are some truly crap heavyweight boxers out there who get licenced all over the World. Flintoff might not look great in sparring but I'd love to see how someone like Mike Middleton looks in sparring or indeed if he even does both to spar.....or train. Flintoff may look shite in training but I reckon the opponent despite being undefeated will look shitter on the night.
Anyone remember Julius Long being brought over to face Audley too. After the fight Danny Williams said 'this guy is 6-1, well I'd love to fight the people he has been beating' or words to that effect. Long could hardly throw an effective punch.

Re: Flintoff fight - who has it wrong?
But Long would have waxed the floor with Flintoff, even then. Also Long has improved and is now a creditable journeyman who has been the distance with some decent names.
Of course there are some crap heavies out there but this guy is young and presumably relatively hungry with some ring experience. However long he has been boxing, it's a lot longer than Flintoff who has taken it up on whim aged 34 and is going in pretty blind. We have a lot more evidence to suggest Dawson will win than Freddie.
I guess we'll see tonight. I must say, I am quite intrigued by it all if only to see if I'm right.

Re: Flintoff fight - who has it wrong?
It's easy to presume someone is hungry. We will see how hungry he is tonight, it certainly doesn't seem like he trains that hard, ok some people are never going to look ripped, but come on. Like I said, Mike Middleton looked god awful in Audley's debut, could hardly throw a proper punch and yet he had a record at the time of 8-9 so if this guy is of a similar calibre I don't expect Flintoff to end up pancaked. Like you I am intrigued, but I would like to see him win, I'm amazed so many boxing fans are defensive about this. It's attracted interest and the bloke isn't saying anything out of line is he? He aint saying 'I am Andrew Flintoff I can do whatever the fornicate I like.'Riddick Blowe wrote:But Long would have waxed the floor with Flintoff, even then. I'm not defensive, I'm just interested because I think I can make money on the fight. You say you don't expect Flintoff to end up pancaked but what evidence is there to suggest Freddie is ANY more capable than his opponent? Just by his physique and how hard people have said he has trained?jameswilson wrote:It's easy to presume someone is hungry. Middleton looked awful yes but it's all relative, he was in with a successful Olympian with an amateur pedigree, and wasn't knocked cold, he got up and wanted to go on. Flintoff has never even been in a ring before!!! In addition to a lot of people saying he just doesn't look good in training.

Because they might turn up, see what a complete load of shite it looks like and never come back whilst telling everyone how shite it is too.jessi wrote:But is it though ?Riddick Blowe wrote:Whatever happens, it's 'Just Another Black Eye For Boxing'The Dark Destroyer wrote:Anyone else dreading this fight? Think about all the cricket fans who never really followed boxing before Freddie turned pro, it's going to bring a new audience and give people ideas, if one school boy joins a boxing club because of flintoff or one spectator who never went to a boxing match before now becomes a fan of boxing how can that hurt ?
Re: Flintoff fight - who has it wrong?
And another thing...why couldn't he have got himself into this shape when he was being paid to be a professional cricketer for England?
Re: Flintoff fight - who has it wrong?
Yeah, his 'old' weight must've contributed to his cricket injuries. However, we don't actually know if he's fit and strong at his 'new' weight. He might be as weak as a kitten, completely bereft of explosiveness, fragile, uncoordinated, terrified, wheezy, and unskilled. All we know just now is that he's stuck to a diet.dondada wrote:And another thing...why couldn't he have got himself into this shape when he was being paid to be a professional cricketer for England?

2 minute rounds is an option available to the Board, they can restrict a fighter to competing over 2sSteveDow wrote:I thought all fights in the pros had to be 3 minute rounds? Obviously not!Coco wrote:It's 4x2's

Yeah don't worry I wasn't referring to you with the defensive comment, you and me are just 2 regulars here debating from each end of the argument, I just get a bit wound up when people jump in and go 'ahhhhhhhh this is terrible it's bringing boxing into disrepute' but yet never comment when loads of other boxers scrape through getting their licences with the board (obviously I don't know any who have but I'm sure if I was able to dig into it I could find some who have.)Riddick Blowe wrote:I'm not defensive, I'm just interested because I think I can make money on the fight. Yeah obviously there is no evidence on whos better out of the 2 tonight, but I just don't get swayed by the 2-0 record. I think it will prove to be a battle of 2 poor boxers.

What are the chances of the commentator referring to Flintoff throwing a right hand as a 'delivery' ?

My money's on 'chin music' getting an early airing.

Flintoff's opponent has been very carefully selected, for one good reason.
Re: Flintoff fight - who has it wrong?
Sorry I've not really followed this. Is the fight tonight? I've seen that mentioned on this thread but I can't see it on my sky epg. Thanks

Well you better get on Flintoff because Dawson is the clear betting favourite now.keithmoonhangover wrote:Flintoff's opponent has been very carefully selected, for one good reason.
Re: Flintoff fight - who has it wrong?
I've had a few quid on Flintoff at 2/1, I think he's worth a punt, I'm sure his team have carefully picked the opponent to give Freddie the best chance of a win.

I'm still baffled by the turn of events that allow a 'carefully picked opponent' to somehow end up as a clear betting favourite.
