Danny Lopez
Danny Lopez
I've got a couple of questions about Danny Lopez. I remember him well when he and Bobby Chacon were the two hottest prospects on the West Coast and I even saw a few of his fights. Strangely though, I know very little about two of the biggest fights of his career. The first one was his stoppage by Chacon, which I vaguely heard was done rather easily (don't know if that's true or not) and the fight in which he proved he was no flash in the pan by knocking out Ruben Olivares. Does anyone know details or have memories of these two fights ?

My mother took me to both of them, and I own them on tape.
The less said about the fight with Chacon the better: Chacon was my mother's pick and I was a Lopez man all the way and yes it was a pretty easy night for Schoolboy. Chacon, in addition to being as tough as humanly possible and being a very strong puncher had very under appreciated boxing skills, and I think he thought a bit further ahead than Lopez did that night.
In the Olivares fight Ruben came out looking to counter the Lopez right with his hook, and Lopez wanted the straight right, of course. Olivares struck first and dropped Lopez with a hook over a right that he pushed out and let hang. Lopez got up and backed Olivares into the ropes and droppeed him with a blistering right, and dropped him again with a left. As the fight progressed Lopez took control and Olivares began landing his right. In the 7th Lopez floored him again-maybe twice more- and that was the end of the fight
