Is Brian Magee a WBA world champion?

Post by stujones »

It reports on fightnews that Brian Magee is the "regular" WBA champion? Is this the case? I knew he won the interim title against Barboza - then there was when Ward was super champion, Balzay was "regular" champion and Magee still interim champion.

Now I know that the fight with Kessler is for the full "regular" title. So Ward must be super dooper champion, Balzay, Super Champion.... but Kessler vs Magee is not being billed as for the vacant regular title and Magee is saying the "he will defend his title".... so has Magee had a Clev and been award "full" world title honours on the basis of being an interim champion.

Not that anyone realistically see him as a world champion (do the biz on Saturday and it might be different) - but just wondering.

Balzay was dropped I think.

Have they promoted Magee, or is it a vacant title fight on Saturday?

He's been promoted, Kessler is the mandatory challenger. The WBA actually wanted Magee to just vacate his interim (3rd tier) title and the Kessler fight be for the vacant (2nd tier) title, but Magee's team argued that if he got injured or something amiss happened he'd be left in limbo.

Let's be frank though, and without wanting to be disrespectful to Brian, his 'title' is a joke. A worthless, paper trinket. Anybody who regards this as a world title fight, or regards anybody other than Andre Ward as the WBA champion, needs to have a good look at themselves.

The WBA are a completely rancid organisation. The sooner they get exterminated the better. I can't actually believe I've spent time writing about them.

(P.S. - if you get the impression from this post that I am not a fan of sanctioning bodies - you'd be correct)

Andre Ward is the WBA champ, everything bar their 'super' champion is cynical money making bollocks.

Completely agree, but as Steve's report says - nice to say we have another big 4 world champion - even though we don't necessarily agree that he truly is in anything but "official" terms.

Something that will do his legacy and long term future the world of good - nice to do some after dinner speaking or something as a world champion. So well done Brian and good work his team.

He's had a mix bag of fortune with the WBA - from the "luck of the Irish" fighting a bulked up light middleweight for the Interim title, to being over looked for the "regular" title when he was interim champion - instead promoting a fight with Balzay and someone else for the regular full title. So nice to see him get some more luck with it - congratulations.

(Apologies to Stu for side-stepping slightly) Do you know I'd like to read? A thorough, in-depth, warts & all investigative history of the major sanctioning organisations with a particular focus on the biographies of long standing presidents e.g. Mendoza (with maybe a little nepotism analysis thrown in) and Sulaiman. if the right person did the job it could be a brilliant and insightful, potentially award winning book.

Unbelievable idea! Shame the guy who wrote the Don King book, Jack Newfield I think his name was, has passed on. He could have done a good job.

This is the kind of attitude that is the problem, though. How can you legitimately argue that he is a 'big four' world titlist when there is somebody within the same sanctioning body, above his title, also seen as a world champion?!?!?!?!??! What does it become then? The 'big five'? The 'big four and a half'?

Journalists calling him a world champion, broadcasters calling him a world champion, the WBA calling him a world champion, Brian Magee and his team calling him a world champion, does not make it correct! All it does is allow these scum bags to get away with it and continue to ruin the legitimacy and interest of championships and titles in boxing (which, let's face it, should be at the heart of any sport).

In the divisions where the WBA have a 'super' world champion, they, and they alone, should be regarded as the world titlist. Nobody else. The person below (Magee in this case) should just be seen as having a junior belt, on a similar status to the WBC Silver/IBF International/WBO Intercontinental title. Everybody involved in boxing should have the same policy. Then, just maybe, with some time and effort, you could see the mess being cleaned up a little bit.

Get Thomas Hauser on the case although he is no doubt plotting the downfall of either a major network or a superstar boxer.

Is Brian Magee a World Champion?

No, he's never beat any World Champions for their titles... But if he defeats Kessler this weekend, then he is worthy of that accolade.

That's the way that I see it anyways.

Is Magee-Kessler any kind of eliminator towards a fight with Ward?
From what i understand about the (very loose if right price) rules are that the super champ of any of these sanction bodies stops taking mandatory fights (so they can still take part in unification fights and look like they are helping the sport) whilst the regualr champ takes on the interim/mandatory challengers instead of the super champ.

So don't expect ward to have a manadtory slapped on him by the wba anytime soon

And as far as i know wlad klitschko hasnt had a wba mandatory since povetkin had the title

I think most people who he would be interested in 'impressing' with such a paper title can see through the utter bollocks it represents.

Incidentally, I've been inspired by Flintoff to turn pro and the BBB of C has approved me. My debut fight is to be for the newly-conceived WBA junior debutante title. Please can I have some plaudits for fighting for a world title

Edit, ok several others have done 'the analogy' above me I now see :TU:
