What happened to peter oboh?

Post by Adamj1987 »

He was wba inter champ as well as brit and commonwealth light heavy champ.

I think he was 35/36 when he last fought. I remember him having trouble getting fights and bouts with dean francis and tony oakey were spoken about. Was it his lack of being able to get fights that retired him more than anything?

Essentially, yes, but when he finally did get a fight (I think it was vs Oakey but may be mistaken), he walked out on it on the night, pretty much sealing his own fate and no promoters would go near him again.

I remember he was due to fight Tony Oakey at Wembely Arena or somewhere big like that in London. It was a Friday night fight on Sky and he was in the building and just refused to fight. Sky interviewed Oboh, can't remember wthat the problem was, then Frank Maloney came on in the interview and offered him a bigger purse and bigger purse fir his next fight. He then just packed his gear and went home. Pretty sure he was in IT as his day job, so maybe he still does that. Good fighter though and heavy handed.

Yeah I remember him walking out on the show at the last minute. I think his attitude was I've been repeatedly fucked over by promoters so I'm gonna fcuk one of them over

He was an excellent fighter, but never seemed to have any luck at getting the right fights (he's the founder of the 'Who needs him club') and spent the vast majority of his career inactive. I recall him giving the undefeated Elvis Michaelenko (s) a good sound thrashing

I remember him absolutely levelling Ole Klemetsen.

That SKY stuff where he basically just shrugged, packed his bag and walked out was a little odd but at least he stuck to his principles.

That's how I viewed it at the time. I don't know if that was the reason but it's definitely what it looked like. A bridge burner if ever there was one but as long as he had a smile on his face as he walked away from the flames, it's all good.

I think he was 40 by them anyway, so he'd pretty much done with the game

I always thought he would have caused Clinton problems but that was probably just me.

I remember the Oakey thing vividly.

It wasn't a written interview, just Sky interviewing him live on the programme. I'm sure Maloney said that if he beat Oakey he was going to get 13k for his next fight, which would have been a decent rise on what he would have been apparantly getting. I remember the figure as I thought it was low for a title fight, not having an idea what boxers get for fights.

This was on the same bill as Haye's first heavyweight fight. I never saw the Sky interview though, would love to see it.

According to the Mail, Oboh was supposed to be paid £9K - not a huge amount for someone who was a British Champion, but I don't suppose he shifted many tickets.

I'd be interested to hear his story. Wonder if Maloney refunded any of Oakey's fans' ticket money, seeing as he saved 9K?

I remember a small peice by glyn leach in BM about oboh vs oakey but thats it

Oboh never got any saxophone calls off anyone, people were scared to death of him. I would have piccolo him over any LH out there, he would be over the bassoon if he got the call though.

the trouble was he needed a manager to orchestrate his next move, because he conducted himself well and you have to have symphony with his plight.

If matched well the re-percussions could have been great and he could become a symbol of all that is wrong with the triangle of sanctioning bodies that shoe horn weaker fighters into mandatory shots. His problems strike a chord and pull a the heart strings of boxing fans who understand that his punching power give him the bass to mount a charge, and if a champion did pluck him as a potential opponent he wouldn't be afraid to blow his own trumpet.

You're not alone in that one. I remember him nearly getting a world title fight with another champion also.

If memory serves me correctly I think he almost got a shot at the WBA regular title, and I think it was with Silvio Branco. I think!!!

the problem with him was he couldnt fight for three minims every round. but many of his opponents would visibly quaver before the first bell. i reckon he quit rather than face the music...but they wouldve band him anyway. i remember there being a bit of a song and dance about it at the time
