Michael Spinks vs. Bob Foster, Billy Conn, Roy Jones, Etc.
I've been watching alot of tape on Spinks and gotta say I've gained a greater appreciation of this man. Unbelievable hand speed in combinations, great defense, and awesome power at 175. How do you guys think he matches up to the men in the thread title and the rest of the 175 pound ATG field?

I think he would beat all of them with Conn serving up the stiffest test.

I'm leaning toward that assumption; Conn would have been the toughest test other than maybe Archie Moore who was just mind blowingly tremendous at 160, 175 and heavyweight. Gene Tunney and Ezzard Charles would have also been tough tests.

I meant the toughest test of those listed. I'd favor Ezzard over Spinks.

I read what you wrote, i just decided to comment on the specific names instead of matching him up with every fighter in history.HomicideHenry wrote:Well I did say.... How you see a Moore-Spinks fight?
Spinks/Moore is a great fight. For some reason I can see michael stopping him in a single fight, but losing a series of bouts. He had a better chin, but Moore's ability to adapt against anyone not named Charles was pretty incredible. Michael's weakest area would be getting smothered like davis was able to pull off, but he had lethal uppercuts on both wings and a long jab that you had to get past. Just a great fighter and one that I feel does much better in H2H than he would in resume.
Re: Michael Spinks vs. Bob Foster, Billy Conn, Roy Jones, Etc.
I see Charles and Spinks as two of the most complete light heavyweight greats ever along with Tunney. While Conn falls a bit short on power, Foster on movement,etc...
Charles seems to have a bit on Gene and Michael in various factors. I'd rank Archie Moore fourth or third on a H2H list...flip-flopping with Spinks for the third spot.

John henry Lewis was a beast, underrated.

Given the strength of Conn's whiskers I think he outlands and outworks Spinks to take a hard fought decision. Spinks knocks out Foster and Roy.
Although I do see other light HWs beating Spinks (that was a helluva deep division historically!) such as Charles, Moore, Tunney, Loughran, JH Lewis, Harold Johnson.

Spinks was more versatile but I see a fight with Foster as 50-50. Conn would be close too. Can’t see anything but a Spinks win against Jones.
Re: Michael Spinks vs. Bob Foster, Billy Conn, Roy Jones, Etc.
More often than not I see Spinks stopping Foster late, but I could see Bob winning once maybe in 3 tries via decision. Jones get's stopped in the 2nd half of the bout. Billy Conn would outbox Spinks and take a close but clear decision in my opinion.
Re: Michael Spinks vs. Bob Foster, Billy Conn, Roy Jones, Etc.
Did Foster ever really get buzzed at 175? Spinks was very cautious against Qawi/Braxton. Got the job done. Don’t think he could be as cautious here and get away with it.
I know Bob got KO’d at heavy quite easily but I’d bet on Frazier and Ali to stop Spinks too.
And most people on here know that I don’t rate Spinks’ heavyweight career very highly. Though I do rate Mike as one of the greatest at 175.

I don't see where Spinks' defense was so good at 175. His chin sure as hell was, because he got hit plenty. I also thought that Eddie Davis, who is certainly not an alltime great, beat him by 2, and as for the unification bout with Qawi, as much as I like SRL, he and the others were ridiculously biased in Spinks favor. I certainly didn't see Spinks dominating that fight the way they did.

115-113 Spinks over Davis.Seamus wrote:I don't see where Spinks' defense was so good at 175. His chin sure as hell was, because he got hit plenty. 144-140 Spinks over Qawi (KD in the 8th).

Foster's opposition at Lt Heavy was largely subpar, Fourie is an underrated fighter and obviously Tiger but I don't know who he fought that would have severely tested his chin. Who was the biggest puncher he faced? Ahumada?Ezzard wrote:Did Foster ever really get buzzed at 175? Spinks was very cautious against Qawi/Braxton. Got the job done. I think Spinks had some of the oddest footwork I've ever seen. Not sure how he managed to be so good with such unorthodox ambulation. Anyone got an opinion on that?

I think that was more at heavyweight than at Light Heavy. Probably designed to allude Larry's jab.
Re: Michael Spinks vs. Bob Foster, Billy Conn, Roy Jones, Etc.
Thanks saad, I'll go back and look at some of his earlier fights, I may have templated the Holmes performances generically across to his other fights. I will say that it's the Holmes fights that stood out in my memory in that regard. He really looked awkward with the footwork. And I may simply have assumed it to be his style in all fights. But you have to admit that in those fights it sure looked unusual.

It was definitely awkward, some of that could also be his ailing knees.BoxBuzz wrote:Thanks saad, I'll go back and look at some of his earlier fights, I may have templated the Holmes performances generically across to his other fights.
