How many boxers bouts were canceled last week because they d

Post by ppb »

Because they did'nt sell enough tickets to cover the cost of their fight?
Has the penny dropped yet guys?
Sell tickets to cover your fight or you wont get fighting at home!
Don't turn up at the weigh in with 30 tickets after telling the promoter all week that you've sold hundreds but "your mates let you down last night" then expect to fight.

I know the Board are dead against it but as you say the way it's going I think it's a matter of time before the Board give it the green light.

The worst thing about the build up to a fight is chasing around selling tickets, fighters should have to sell but sometimes promoters get lazy and can't be bothered to sell there own show, its a 2 way thing

Very good point mate but mark my words it will all go ticket deals unless the promotor can get a TV Deal which is very unlikely in the current economic climate

Surely the job title ''promoter'' demands you actually promote the show and sell tickets?

At the minute, all many of them do is book a venue and arrange a few fights.... and a few journeymen to be on stand-by just incase someone doesn't show up.

Hardly rocket science.

I agree with leedslad the fighters should sell as many as they can but how many tickets are the promoters actually trying to sell? You can't just book a venue and bang a few posters up, some promoters could be more active in the community and get the fighters better known to the punters, at the moment all ticket sales come from the boxers and our main aim on fight night is to win the fight not fill the venue

Agreed.

The sport can be robbed of talent because lads with potential can't shift tickets initially. The sport can also be lumbered with crap stars for the exact opposite reason. The latter is not a problem, the former is and always has been.

I would always recommend young lads who can't (or who don't want to) shift tickets themselves to hold off on turning pro as long as possible and fully top out their potential as amateurs. That way they've got a chance. Otherwise, no matter how good they are, or could be, it's really hard to get going if they haven't got a large family and social network to rely on as your initial fan-base.

I've seen more than one really good lad walk away before turning over because all they wanted to do was train and fight. They had no aspirations to be marketeers and salesmen above and beyond showcasing their skills in the ring. What's more they were unsociable kids with no family background to speak of. It's a shame and I sometimes wonder who and what the sport has missed out on.

What actually counts as a good ticket seller in boxing terms?

I remember seeing on Twitter, Mark Tibbs saying that Frank Buglioni had sold 300 tickets for one of his fights.

I'd imagine that's pretty good, sounds good to me anyway :OhYes:!

If a fighter covers his purse and his opponents and put a bit into the kitty then they will fight as often as they want because its not costing the promoter any money to get him out, I understand this totally, but the problem comes when the ticket seller point blank refuses to fight anybody with a pulse because of fear of loosing, its hard shifting tickets when you tell your mates your having a trilogy with that latvian who you watched be beat last month, it works both ways, fighters need to want to get in there and make good fights and promoters need to get busy selling there shows, you can't keep churning out shit and expect the public to buy it

Yeah....

All your mates buy tickets, they ask a few of their mates/colleagues, one of them looks at Boxrec and sees that you first fight with the opponent was W KO1, and in between the opponent has gone L PTS 36-40, L PTS 52-60, L KO1, L KO2.... and decides to stay in and watch Eastenders.

did this happen to a lot of boxers last week? i heard of a few it happend to up in scotland, its hard for the lads as a lot of thme box out same gym or from same area, so people will buy from any boxer thinking there just going all to support them all, it can be hard for them all to do say 100 each.

It reminds me of when I was in a small band when I was younger and all the venues were ticket/flyer deals. We'd give out flyers, entrance fee was £5 and we'd get £1 if someone paid in with the flyer. A stinking, rotten deal, but on lower levels that's how venues keep open.

I can't imagine how hard it must be to try and get your mates to fork out £30 or more, time and again.

I agree with all the comments on this thread (even though the majority make depressing reading), but the above post pretty much sums it up for me.

What's wrong is a promoter pulled a guy off coz he only sold 20-30 tickets allegedly and the paying public weren't told he was off,I think that is shocking has he was one of the main fights, there must be a fairer way that suits both parties

Very true Curtis i know fighters around here who choose who they fight because they sell tickets nowhere near as easy for someone like yourself because yours and especially your opponents purse wont come cheap but like said earlier if you can sell more then yours and your opponents purse you will get the fights and the wins. The way it is with most promoters around here now for 4x3 or 6x2 is you HAVE TO sell 100 tickets at £30 a pop in order to get £1000 which you then have to pay your promoter/trainer out of which isnt easy to do at all especially 4 or so times a year. If you don't sell tickets you have to go on the road to fight then your fighting ticket sellers who are only interested in wins so if your a half decent fighter who cant shift tickets basically your fooked cos the bouts aren't there whereas if you're a shit fighter who can shift 200 tickets you could well make it to 12-0 before you fight anybody with a pulse
Thats exactly how it works sell 100 tickets at 30 each generates 3000 thats 1k for you 1k for opponent and 1k for promotor any less and your fighting for less and if you do less than 70 the fight aint gonna happen unless you want to fight for nothing

1K for a 4 rounder for your opponent, between 1.5k and 1.7k for a 6 rounder, the home fighter gets between 800 and 1k, even though he sells the tickets, the money is in being the away fighter.
