That would be very prohibited for the boxers. Imagine if a boxer fell out with whoever ran or owed this UFC type boxing promotion? They'd be frozen out with no other promotion company to join unless they moved outwith the UK.
What would actually be better is if the fighters fought under their OWN banner - say like a world tour run by a Pro Boxers Association - similar to tennis and golf. If that happened the fans would see the best fights and the fighters would get the majority of the money.

Of course, this would mean turfing out the promoters, which would be no mean feat......

Running and fighting will outlive every other contemporary sport - as they have done through the ages. There will be peaks and troughs of popularity but they'll never die whilst humans are on the planet. I think people worry about the health of boxing a bit too much and similarly over value the way other sports are organised.

very true. And I suppose we all see UFC as the pinnicle but in actual fact there are thousands of MMA promotions, just that UFC cornered the TV and prestiege market.

Can someone explain why a long-term TV deal is SO crucial? I mean, i can understand the security it provides a promoter knowing that they are guaranteed an income for their fights no matter what cards they put on, but why doesn't it get turned round with the Promoter getting the TV companies to come to them? For instance....

Frank Maloney has/had no long term TV deal in place. So he arranges a fight for his main client, David Price, against a decent fringe contender like Tony Thompson. He then presents that to TV companies and asks them to "bid" for the fight. Add in a few contract riders surrounding change of opponent, quality of undercard, etc and surely by putting an attractive fight out to competition, you will end up driving the value of TV fee up? Ok, there is limited long term certainty, but if a promoter has faith in their fighter (like Maloney with Price), then the zeroes will just get added to the value of the individual fight the higher up the rung they go.

I think a lot will depend though on the amount of time between fight date and the pitch.

Take Hearn at Sky - he knows exactly that his cards are going to be on prime time on Saurday as soon as they are made. Sky can start advertising them from the off set.

What stops Maloney from actually planning 6-9 months in advance? He seems to have secured a fight with Thompson for February, so a nice 6 weeks or so of build up. Agree a TV deal by mid January. He should also have a plan in place for following the fight, ie if Price wins, the options for next opponent are A, B and C and if he loses, the options are D, E and F.

Any other business that would like to be successful has to earn their money and plan effectively. Promoters seem to believe different rules apply. Maloney has a perfect opportunity to make a hell of a lot of money for himself and for David Price, given his talent and the timing of his rise to prominence, so why not take advantage? Yes, it's risky but do it well and the rewards will be fantastic.

The danger of not having a long term deal is obviously that there are no guarantees that a TV company will pick the fight up either at all or at an acceptable price. I accept that if a fighter is exciting enough or good enough this would be unlikely but promotors need longer term deals in place so that they have certainty that their fighters will get TV exposure and money. If Maloney had to negotiate with different TV companies every time he wanted to put on a show not only would that be time consuming and costly it would also mean that there is the constant worry about whether the fights will be picked up at the right price.

I can't make my mind up as to how I feel about this. If it was David Coldwell or Carl Greaves I wonder if the mood would be different? The fact that it's Frank Maloney leaves me unenthused, perhaps unfairly, as I think he was harshly treated by SKY (as were the Hattons).

We now have boxing on SKY, BNation, Channel 5, Primetime, ESPN, Premier Sports and Loaded. Outside of the diehards I just can't see how the sport can succeed in building up and sustaining a next generation following. And as others have alluded too, this could mean fewer top fights are made as a result. Who is in charge of quality control? The promoters or the (sometimes) clueless TV Execs?

Yet again this leaves me feeling very frustrated towards SKY which saddens me because I've backed them (quite rightly) since they entered British boxing back in 1990. They've made a proper mess of this though, arguably worse than when they routinely allowed promoters to get away with staging mediocre WBU, IBO and WBF title fights a decade ago.

There is more boxing available to watch free now than there ever has been (less your internet connection fee). I moaned about this sort of stuff for a while before realising I couldn't see the wood from the trees. Don't forget, it's not long ago that fighters and fans had to order videos of future opponents and global superstars from adverts in the back of the News and BM. Now, if a fight's been filmed, chances are it's on YouTube. We've an embarrassment of riches that we sometimes take for granted.

With out a doubt, legal streams done by the likes of the WBC, Bild and Top Rank are great...but to pay for all the channels showing boxing costs a small fortune...hence why illegal streams are so big. No sport in the UK seems as fragmented tv wise...and even now we miss out on some great fights...

it does come across as very low budget, and jamie moore was really uncomfortable in his 2 minutes of presenting at the start. still, atleast it is free

Was that it - I thought Maloney said there was going to be some big news after the fight.... with Fury in the audience I did get excited that Price vs Fury might be on (loaded).... but it didn't seem to be the case at all.

Hope it isn't on Loaded to be honest, not good coverage - the fight was decent though

Fury made me laugh, called Price a pussy and said Kevin Johnson was the best american heavyweight by a mile

However, he is a character and I he adds some colour to the HW division

I'm not overly bothered about the quality of the coverage to be honest. We got a good, well-matched domestic fight on free-to-air TV tonight. How often do we get that nowadays?

Fair play to Loaded for giving it a go.

I'm glad someone else talks a bit of sense at least fighters are getting coverage, I bet the guys complaining about the pic and sound still watched crap porno's copies on VHS when they was younger without complaint!!

I'm glad fighters are getting coverage, we got to see a great fight, great to see Jamie getting more work as a commentator I just would of liked to see some undercard!!

It's great like when channel m covered a few years back, great or local small hall fighters to get some form of coverage too!! Well done boys keep it p :TU:

Good post, don't forget this was a last minute thing arranged with less than 48 hours notice. Picture quality had a lot to do with the lack of a large lighting rig that just couldn't be put in on time.

All things considered, the Loaded team did a great job

the fact that skelton was ringside indicated the fight was already signed. it was a shocking step back in class for price.
