HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
Something that has been discussed on this forum before and it's an interesting one in my opinion. He certainly is a famous boxer, an absolute darling with the media, but is he a popular boxer with boxing fans?
Really interesting comment I found on one of the newspaper comments sections. What do you make of this?

...he has never sold tiockets ion the states, and in every fight he has had he has had to give them away, except the pterson fight which i will explain in a sec.
I mentioned these facts the other day. You just read the media nonsense, but I actually know what goes on. Here are the facts. Khan sold hardly anything for judah fight, the stadium was virtually empty fifteen minutes before his fihht started. So GBP decided to let punters in for free who were hanging around outside (almost dragged them in off the street job). This was done to make it look like this was a well attended event.
So for the next fight, GBP and HBO decided that khan had to go to a venue that would sell and use the oppositions hometown angle tyo get the opponent to sell some tickets. So they decided instead of fighting elsewhere to go to washington (none of this claptrap about khan being brave in oppnents backyard and all that hype)> So they had to go to washington so peterson could bring some home fans which he did.
For the garcia fight, I have the figures. just short of 7000 tickets issued, 3000 sold or given to media etc before the fight, 3700 remained unsold. I can back those figures up with actual gate release. So they knew he doesnt sell, hence why he went to molinas yard to fight rather than neutral location. But molina is not known in his own town.So he could not sell any either. So this week GBP realised that instead of leaving the hall empty or giving them for free at the last minute, they turned it into a charity thing on mnday, bring a toy for kids worth $20 and get two tickets, i.e $10 toy per ticket. What a joke. In this way, people willing to help charitable causes, they sold 5000 tickets for nil revenue this week, but got a few toys oin the process.
Khan has hopeless ppv numbers - henve why he was taken off ppv. He did well with the prime time v mclsokey, but that was mck fans - khan never sold in othe rfihts so sky took him off ppv and he ran to primetime and then came back when primetime told him they would struggle to sell him as ppv. His last ppv fight was mck. All since have been non ppv.
But the only reason gbp like khan is because the media hype him and tv netwroks across world pay to broadcast him - eg three channels in pakistan were showing this, and many other countires. But they will soon realise thier numbers are bad and quit as well. Khn is on last legs, He has no fan base apart from about 50 relatives/friends who are the same group he grew up with. He is hated by uk fans, henve why he gets boooed wherever he goes on stage in US. Look at when he attended the wiegh in a couple of years ago of the fs fight, he got booed by brit fans.

Re: HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
A synopsis: Khan doesn't sell many tickets. Khan doesn't do big PPV numbers in the US or UK. Khan is a significant international draw and selling the rights to his fights makes him a profitable asset for GBP.
It sounds about right. The kid is an exciting fighter. He makes good money for himself and turns a profit for his promoters. He appeals to a global audience.
They'll be giving away tickets for the Brook fight, too.
Lots of fights in Vegas are only rammers because the casinos give people tickets for the fights because they know they will play the tables.

But how does he turn a profit, when there 'seems' to be very little interest in him in the UK and the US?
Is it Pakistan TV that makes him money? I don't know and I'm genuinely interested.

Re: HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
I'm amazed that Amir Khan isn't popular because he is rarely in a dull fight & he has a persona that divides opinion.
He has that annoying habit of talking about himself in the third person & many people see him as arrogant, so they would go & watch him in the hope that he gets sparked, which is always possible because of the way he fights.
There's also the other side of him, the side that is friendly & personable; the side of him that never refuses an autograph or picture & does good work for his community in Bolton.
When you marry these two Amir Khans up, that should theoretically mean that everyone would want to see him.
I just don't get it.

So many people wanted him to fail based on his race and I don't care what anyone says that is a fact, unfortunately racism plays a big part with Amir and he's kind of hinted that himself at times.

Re: HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
If countries in Asia and the ME are paying good money for the right to air his fights, it might not matter if he's not a huge draw in the States. Fill the stadiums up with rent-a-mob crowds for a bit of atmosphere and with his combative style and heritage, he's a winner elsewhere in the world. I'm just surmising here BTW. I don't have a clue.loaded_gloves wrote:But how does he turn a profit, when there 'seems' to be very little interest in him in the UK and the US?

Re: HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
He's not on PPV in the States and they do routinely give his tickets away over there, those are facts. Ive yet to be convinced he's that much of a draw over here without a 'name' opponent.
Re: HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
I can't speak for the USA but don't believe Khan is disliked in the UK because of his race or religion. Who by?
I loved Hamed (even though I still thought him effortlessly capable of being irritating), whereas Amir leaves me cold as a personality. I think he is charmless in both victory and defeat, and a tedious interview subject.
I'm sure he can live with that.

Re: HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
i wouldnt mind that if its actually true. i mean hatton said the same thing about billy graham when his health was failing and every1 was like "hes the fighter, got to do whats best for him...." "hes the only one that can make that decision, its his life at risk in there..." etc.TJ77 wrote:Read the article he isnt a big draw and is blaming Roach's parkinsons desease getting the way of his ability to train him properly a statement from someone you would consider class ?billy nelson wrote:amir is a big draw coz he's a class fighter
I dont blame amir for leaving roach, it was obv he was spreading himself a bit thin and i bet amir was paying top whack.
saying that, i dont like khan at all. hes so dilusional. and as a person just a little bit too simple for my tastes. each to their own.

Re: HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
wrong. racism barely ever an issue in boxing. its just a lame excuse dragged out by spoilt fighters that cant understand why they cant draw flys.Rockys gum shield wrote:So many people wanted him to fail based on his race and I don't care what anyone says that is a fact, unfortunately racism plays a big part with Amir and he's kind of hinted that himself at times.
Re: HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
Whilst it would be nice to troll Khan and say what a failure he is Stateside....... The reality is that lots of fights that would sell bundles of tickets over here, go largely unnoticed over there.
Tarver vs Dawson 1 sold 500-600 tickets ? Bradley vs Alexander bombed too on account of it being held at the home of the Kronk, Detroit.
I've seen bigger crowds for British titles than they have over there in unification fights.

I want him to fail because he drives a Range Rover, I'd actually love the kid otherwise, ffs Amir be a real man and buy a motorcycle, fornicating fannying around in a Range RoverRockys gum shield wrote:So many people wanted him to fail based on his race and I don't care what anyone says that is a fact, unfortunately racism plays a big part with Amir and he's kind of hinted that himself at times.

Khan is usually exciting to watch. Any fighter with his speed & attacking mentality usually is. I think he must have won a few fans in the USA with the Maidana fight. But then he probably turned them off with his post-fight interview after Peterson.
Everyone in Britain loved him as a fresh 17-year old British Olympic sliver medallist. Now all I hear is people slating him, because he comes across as arrogant. And then there's the numerous Twitter episodes.
But then, as mentioned in another post, Khan does a lot of good work in the community and is good with fans on a personal level. So he's almost like a Jekyll-and-Hyde.
Now all of the above would usually add up to a big box-office draw. People hated Naz because of his arrogance, so they were willing to watch him fight in the hope of seeing him knocked out. I always watch Mayweather for the same reason. So I'm not entirely sure that it's true when people are saying he's not a draw at all.
GBP are business men, when all's said and done. If he wasn't profitable for them, they'd have dropped him long ago.

this post is total rubbish
khan has a massive following and sells out the MEN arena and not many other brits can do that
ward is a superstar of the sport and look at the crowd when he fought froch in his own country
there was as much people at a former fat cricketer fighting a fat boy in the MEN, and you say amir khan has no following

I can't remember Khan ever selling out the MEN. The top tier was all empty and closed off during his world title fight against Kotelnik and the lower tier also had lots of empty seats.mullenman wrote:this post is total rubbish

Khan is a decent draw in the UK. He is not a huge ticket seller but neither is he a low ticket seller (in the UK). A decent show featuring Amir Khan as the main event could easily sell 10,000+ tickets in the UK (not in the USA).
Re: HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
This is how I see it. I really like Khan and whilst the way he boxes isn't the style that typically attracts me the most, there is something about his combative nature that is compelling. He's a real fighter and brave. That said, he's not charismatic, like Hatton or Naz were. It takes something a little extra to motivate twenty thousand people to pay to go and watch you box. Very few have that. I see Khan as a popular television fighter with enough global appeal to keep making big money. The Law wrote:I can't remember Khan ever selling out the MEN. Re: HOW MUCH OF A DRAW IS AMIR KHAN?
I think he broke into the states too early, He should have avenged his loss against Presscot before he went abroad. Everybody likes rivalries and the dramas that come with them, it makes the fight a whole lot better if there is bad blood or a ko loss to redeem.
He cant make a statement like he will fight any one if he wont get back in the ring with Presscot or Garcia.
