which fights could sell out the MEN
Re: which fights could sell out the MEN
Fury-Price would maybe do it, but only because of the relatively short distance between Liverpool and Manchester. (In other words Price would be the one who fills it, not Fury).
Other than that, I don't think there's any single fight that would sell it out. Get a decent overall bill with some competitive bouts involving popular North-West based fighters and you'd have a chance, but not with a headline event alone.

Re: which fights could sell out the MEN
Realistically I'd say only Amir Khan would have a chance to fill it.
The likes of Quigg and Murray couldn't even sell out the Manchester Velodrome for a stacked card 6 months ago.
As far Fury and Price, aren't they still fighting in relatively small-scale arenas? (With Price making the odd appearance at the Echo - I have no idea on attendances for these)

Re: which fights could sell out the MEN
i guess you could say anywhere with 20 k , i just listed the MEN being the most popularmfc_se15 wrote:novice wrote:with ricky hatton now retired wich fights/ fighter could sell out the MEN fully?
I think it depends if you literally mean the MEN or do you mean just doing 20k tickets anywhere in the UK?
For example I've seen a few mentions of Groves v Degale its a bit fight and as someone said it did big numbers last time, but I think if it was going to sell near to 20k tickets it would need to be in London.
just out of interest which out of the middleweight clashes from britian would sell most ?

Fury-Price would do it and it would be fans from all over Britain that sold it out. This fight would be an 'event', no doubt about it.greenyox3 wrote:Fury-Price would maybe do it, but only because of the relatively short distance between Liverpool and Manchester. Re: which fights could sell out the MEN
I agree to an extent but I think, if it was to be made a little bit down the line, maybe even backend of next year the hype machine would be fully working again. Warren with his links to the Sun hyping it to everyone, there would be some sort of "world title" on the line for this "battle of Britain", Degale would have had more exposure on channel 5 etc. But it would probably need a good undercard with it, for the first fight between them Cleverly was meant to fight for a world title (he still did ultimately but not the fight people were expecting....).mickey1975 wrote:I dont think the fight is as big as it was. Like people have said Fury v Price would do it or close to I reckon. Quite a few of my mates down here would travel up for that which is normally an indication its considered a big fight.
How many tickets has Bellew been shifting in some of his Echo Arena fights? Would him v Cleverly (plus a decent undercard) shift a decent amount of tickets still?
Re: which fights could sell out the MEN
Sometimes if two individuals who dont normally do massive ticket sales fight each other, then it can generate massive interest.
I recall Maccarinelli fighting Bobby Gunn on ITV on a 25,000 sold out Calzaghe show. Meanwhile David Haye fought a proper unbeaten fighter in Fragomeni in front of about 800 people at York Hall.
Maccarinelli would never do huge numbers on his own two feet, and Haye was the same at that point in time. His Mormeck fight had around 30 people there supporting him and was not picked up by Setanta until 24 hours before fight time.
But when they were matched together, it was picked up by Showtime, broadcast across America and sold out the 02.
Only Hatton could fill the MEN with mediocre opponents - for anyone else to fill it then it has to be a very interesting fight indeed.
Price vs Fury would definitely sell it.

You reckon? I'm not so sure. Not at this moment. Maybe in a years time, when it's been built up a little more, especially if Fury wins a "world" title and his C5 audience has grown a bit, and Price will be world-ranked as well.mickey1975 wrote:Fury-Price would do it and it would be fans from all over Britain that sold it out. As someone who lives in the South, I'd watch it on TV and make a night of it but I can't say I'd travel up North for it (which I have done for fights in the past).

Yes i do, for sure. I would be more than happy to buy as many tickets as i could and then sell them on Ebay for a vast profit i am so sure it would sel lout!greenyox3 wrote:You reckon? Re: which fights could sell out the MEN
I thought the same about Groves-Degale. Two unbeaten prospects, one an Olympic gold medallist, big domestic fight, both men in their hometown, at the O2 Arena. And Cleverly was also on the bill fighting for a world title (ok that's not how it turned out, but that's how it was sold).mickey1975 wrote: Yes i do, for sure. I found myself with some spare tickets after several "mates" let me down, and I ended up taking a loss on them.
Boxing is by no means dying as some say (and have always said) it is, but don't over-estimate its popularity. Only true superstars can sell out big arenas. And these guys aren't there yet.

Re: which fights could sell out the MEN
I'm not naive, I know how hard it is but am very confident these two would do it. As for DeGale-Groves, I never expected them to completely sell out and was very impressed with the attendance(I was there as well).greenyox3 wrote:I thought the same about Groves-Degale. Re: which fights could sell out the MEN
That is what i was saying, the matt Hatton fight was more or less full which is about 10000(i was at that one) and the other fights did around the 6000-7000 according to Hearn but maby he was overstating the attendence for those. He is not at the stage where can sell it out on his own but i think he will get there.jamiedavies02 wrote:ashedward wrote:I was just thinking that but I'm always sceptical after hearing people on more than one occasion claim there were 20,000 tickets sold for his fights at the Motorpoint, when the capacity is 13,500, which is obviously BS. If he has indeed sold that place out then I'd agree that there's every chance he and Khan could sell out the MEN.I've been to Brooks last 3 at the Motorpoint, only v Mathew Hatton was it anywhere near full. Against Jones and Saldivia they had a 3rd of the upper tier blacked out - and there was still empty seats!
He sold it out once which was the matt Hatton fight, he got 6000-7000 got Jones/Saldavia.There is not a doubt in my mind that Khan-Brook at the right time and if Kell beats someone decent first and wins a Wold title would sell out the MEN.The Sky promotion for that would be crazy.
Re: which fights could sell out the MEN
I think between 6-70,000 is great for Brook in this climate, and considering he's been fighting relative unknowns to the general public like Jones and Saldivia. 10,000 against Matt Hatton who is quite well known but not a superstar is a great attendance. Therefore you'd think he'd easily fill the MEN against Khan if it was marketed properly which obviously it would be.

FuryvPrice
Haye v Fury
Price V Haye
Khan V Brook
Froch V Kessler
That's it

That's it
Re: which fights could sell out the MEN
There were about 10,000 for Brook Hatton, Brook v Jones was about 5,000, Brook v Saldivia was about 3,000, many of whom were there to see Jamie McDonnell.
