Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
I noted that there has been a bit of banter between George and Carl on twitter and was wondering what people thought about this as a possible match up.
At the end of next year it could be a good one. Groves, will of had 1 or 2 more fights by then, and throws really good body shots, and they are the only shots that seem to have some effect on Froch. Equally Froch is a top, top class fighter and very experienced.
They also know eachother from sparring.
How would people see this one going?

A fight I would like to see but unlikely to happen. At this stage you have to say Froch would win this.
Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
Am sure Groves had previously acknowledged Froch was a level above from there sparring previously but perhaps feels he has progressed enough to bridge that gap.
I see Groves as a less sturdy version of Froch, i dont think he could take the fire coming back from Froch for 12 rounds.

Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
Froch would make Groves look like a baby seal at culling time.
Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
I think Groves will be a great fighter in another year or two. But right now Froch would smack his bum and send him to bed early like a stepson.
Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
The only way Groves could win this is to try to use his speed to outbox Froch and fight off the back foot for 12 rounds but even this would be unlikely to work as I think Froch would just walk through him. If it became a tear up Groves would be stopped.
Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
Yeah he's good, Groves, but he's no Ward or Dirrell.SteveDow wrote:The only way Groves could win this is to try to use his speed to outbox Froch and fight off the back foot for 12 rounds but even this would be unlikely to work as I think Froch would just walk through him. Frochy to wear him down stopping him late. Groves with a bit of early success (or to make it at least competitive).

Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
Groves strikes me as either adaptable, or a fighter stuck between two styles. Is he a come forward fighter, or a move with speed? In his last outing I actually remarked how he increasingly had developed elements of Froch's style, low lead, stayed in range a lot, everything a tough fight. But I think he lacks Carl's pop, fitness and currently experience.
I think Carl would beat him down but it would be competitive for 5-6 rounds.

Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
Right now, Groves isn't ready for Froch. Groves is a good fighter and he showed that against Johnson. But i think he needs to improve his opponents each time he gets in and continue to gain experience. Whats the rush? He jumps in with Froch now and gets beat, he might not be the same again.
Give him 18 months and Froch is still around, (providing he hasnt jumped back in with Ward and got schooled again) then yeah I can see Groves beating him, but right now definatly not.
You see improvements with Groves each time he fights, body shots, angles, movement, power; he does have the skill, with more experience he could be a force.

Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
I see this as Froch's retirement party fight after he beats Kessler and loses to Ward in rematches.
Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
I don't see Groves beating froch at all. Even if they met in their respective primes, George has plenty of flaws that make him vunerable to what Froch brings to the table. Punch resitance, inability to deal adequetly with pressure being put on him, poor footwork to get him out of trouble. Plus, froch is far far underrated. He's not a stylist by any means, but has enough about him to carry any shots that george lands, and to make him miss a lot of his power shots. Groves is exciting, don't get me wrong, i just feel he has shown enough flaws for froch to make this not even a close fight. Froch stoppage 4-6 rounds i reckon.
Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
Non topic really.
Froch is a proven world class fighter towards the end of his career.
Groves is a fringe world class fighter who isnt ready for Froch and by the time he is Froch will be gone.
Bit like Calzaghe v Froch, different eras, non discussion really

Interesting - I agree with what you are saying, and your predictions.broomy7s wrote:I see this as Froch's retirement party fight after he beats Kessler and loses to Ward in rematches.
Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
I don't think froch will retire anytime soon, I think he will go on for at least another 2 to 3 years, and the groves fight could happen in 2014 !
Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
I like Groves, fun to watch, but his weaknesses, primarily his defence and apparent punch resistance, don't match up well with Froch.
He can be tagged regularly with jabs and right hands - he doesn't have the reflexes like Haye, nor a clear speed advantage, again like Haye, to be able to pull that style off at the very highest level.
At domestic level he looks fearsome, overcoming a rough patch to stop Anderson and pretty much one-shotting Paul Smith.
At the very highest level against serious operators who can take his shots, I think that without some improvements he'll come unstuck.
I don't think he can box Froch on the outside for 12 rounds, and despite Froch not being brilliant on the inside he'd not be able to handcuff him the way that Ward did so well.
I'd say that Froch would size him up for a couple before finding the target with the left to the body and the right hand.... and Groves being rescued around the 6th.

Yep, that's how I'd book it. Groves would get a proper battering on the ropes around the sixth.LeedsLad wrote:I'd say that Froch would size him up for a couple before finding the target with the left to the body and the right hand.... and Groves being rescued around the 6th.

As much as i rate adam booth (and i really do), i think hes the wrong trainer for groves. a lot of his style/work looks a bit forced at times. As daft as it sounds, ive always thought george and degale would be better off switching over trainers. booth would do wonders with degales attributes and suit his confident attitude, where as mcdonnells work ethic and fundamentals would benefit groves.
Right now Froch makes it look like Ike vs Tina

It would be cat & mouse!!!
Groves is now a runner with no faith in his chin at this level.

I read an interesting interview with Froch. He was very candid in saying he keeps his hands low because he has chronic elbow problems, and now is more stationary because his legs aren't what they were. And he's still kicking ass!

Re: Carl Froch vs George Groves: A good possible match up
Since the Kessler and Ward fights, Carl for me has improved, he now spends more time punching and less posing, and uses the jab as a weapon in it's own right rather than a rangefinder. Against Kessler he spent too long waiting for the big shots, but even so, gave the Dane a bit of a kicking down the stretch, Kessler has not looked the same fighter since, but he gave away too many rounds, expecting his engine and power to bring him victory late doors.
Direll was a poor night, and at times Carl looked awkward, but Dirrell would do that to anyone, even Ward, because he is so slippery and negative.
Ward i think has too much for Carl, and has underrated toughness and uses his leverage well, he was even able to boss Carl in the clinches, which was very surprising. I think Froch could make it more competitive, but don't see him winning.
Aside from that, don't really see anyone else out there who would beat Carl. Not seen enough of Groves of late, but Carl is one hell of a fighter, a genuine tough nut, and now that he is fighting with real aggression, he is really putting a beating on people.
Groves hasn't the experience or toughness, and I think Carl is actually quite a fresh 34, he is a tremendous athlete, and clearly trains like a demon. Think that even in a couple of years time, Carl, unless he has lost the desire, is going to be a monster.
