Ezzard Charles Record Discrepancy

Post by evndrbsn »

The record of Ezzard Charles is listed at 87-25-1 (49 KOs). By reading the entry on Charles, I can see you think each and every fight should have a verifiable news source so you can make sure the fight happened, but it is not conceivable to use this research method for fights happening prior to the 1970s. For one, most of these people involved in the fights before this time are now dead and not available for comment (which would make it impossible to find out whether or not a fight was fabricated to pad Charles' record), and also happened prior to the "information age" where the Internet and cable television made news a verifiable thing capable of being cross referenced easily. Just because you can't find an article covering a fight in a newspaper did not mean a fight did not happen, given that if a newspaper was not aware of the card happening or did not send someone to report it (or just did not consider it newsworthy), they wouldn't publish anything. I think for this reason, the record of Ezzard Charles should be listed as it is historically remembered (96-25-1, 58 KOs), and not by some research that quite possibly could be incorrect.

The record that has been listed throughout the years is incorrect and as current newspaper research proves many bouts in fact did not happen so the record is currently being corrected from the errors that have for many years been passed incorrectly down from one to another. Of course it now drops Charles out of my "fighters with 50+ knockouts" in their career list, and rightly so, but no way should anyone list it as it use to be just because it use to be...it's wrong!

In going by what you are stating, most of the older records found on Boxrec should not be listed. Many bouts from the "golden age" (Pre-1960) cannot be fully verified via newspaper or other news sources. Ezzard Charles' record of 96-25-1 (58 KOs) has been the accepted truthful record, and one also accepted by FightFax (the official record keepers).

Also, going by what Boxrec is doing now by verifying with the Commissions (which I agree with), how can any fight not verified with a state boxing commission be listed then, if I were to use your arguement. Fights can be accepted without full verification and should be UNLESS factual evidence can be provided and defended that would prove otherwise.

Heresay from one person and not a direct source cannot be justified or utilized if Boxrec should choose to keep the most accurate records.

The biggest percentage of older results being entered into the database are directly from newspaper accounts, either microfilm, or online newspaper archives. The old records in fight fax books are so incorrect that it's not even funny and I would be willing to bet mucho dollars that maybe 5% of pre-1950 records in fax are correct. You seem to be very, very clueless to the term of newspaper research.

As to your statement "cannot be fully verified via newspaper or other news sources" I don't know what in the hell you are trying to get at there, but here's a little sample of actual newspaper research that I have done...which there have been years upon year upon years of the exact same kind of research done by many boxing historians, so as to what you are trying to claim...I have no idea, but there is no validity to it. Below is January 1898 results from a few various 1898 newspapers that I have persoanlly researched and bout that I have personally verified, which I have the rest of the year, but I'm just presenting a sample, although the format is different than in word...I have files of results from 1895 thru 1950 of nothing but newspaper results and the Ezzard Charles record, well the fellow who is researching it now is using newspapers. I've done a lot of research on Charles myself using nothing but newspapers!

Every record here is an open book, and we are always trying to improve and confirm things. Ezzard Charles was not a nobody fighting on shows in barns in the sticks, he was a former national AAU Champion, who fought in big cities, where the cards were usually covered.

Back when Charles fought, boxing was covered very well in most newspapers. Most papers would hype the card all week, unless it was in a big city with more than one show a week. You would have a very good idea about who was appearing, and what happened.

Regarding FightFax, it is not highly accepted amongst real boxing historians. For current records, that's a different story.

I represent Reggie Johnson. Please change Reggie "Sweet" Johnson's birthplace from "Cincinnati, OH" to "Houston, Texas" (Reggie tells me he's never even been to Cincinnati) and "Manager Bob Jordan" to "Agent: Kerry Daigle." Please call or e-mail me if you have any questions. Thank you.

If you have changes that need to be made, start a new thread, don't put it under an existing topic that is completely off-subject. I was only able to make two connections between Reggie Johnson and Ezzard Charles: Both had Cincinnati listed as a city and both were light heavyweights. Otherwise, it has nothing to do with a discrepancy in Charles' record.

So now Ezzard Charles' record has been changed again? No longer 87-25-1 (49 KOs)? So now one of the previously falsified fights by his manager has been dug up in the records and found to be legit? Hahaha. Too funny.

Give it a little more time. He will be back to 96-25-1 (58 KOs) in no time.

People actually took the time to verify these bouts, and look in Ohio papers to do this. Should we just include bouts because someone put them in a record book erroneously, or in an attempt to lie, as is theorized. At what point do we discount these bouts?

By your logic we would never discount these bouts, because there is no burden of proof that suffices. All bouts should be proveable whether in magazine or newspaper. I think that is something that record compilers agree upon.

No, you misunderstood me. They have not been confirmed so his record will remain as it is until then.
