He's definitely got very good potential as a pro but it seems like Hatton Promotions have really neglected him.

Joe Murray was earning considerably more as an amateur than he is now as a pro. Current funded amateurs could do worse than take note of that before ditching the vest.

Amateurs on the brink of a pro career should ask themselves the following questions and be honest with themselves:

Can I shift tickets from the get go?
Do I have the potential to go beyond British level?
Do I have a truly exciting style?
Will I have crossover appeal?
If my promoter hits a brick wall, will there be others interested enough in what I have to offer to (for want of a better word) buy me from him?

If you're not getting (m)any ticks in the 'yes' box, keep your funding for as long as it lasts.

The problem is that every season brings someone younger, hungrier and very well schooled and with the amateur tournaments there are maybe 10-12 bouts a season; that's 10-12 banana skins. The amateur set up is not an easy life either; I'd imagine some of those who chose not to turn over will regret it when they get beaten in the ABAs this coming season.. At least with the pros there's a bit of lee way.

There's some truth in that. It's a difficult call. The guys on the podium squad are there for a reason i.e. they have the talent and style to medal at major amateur championships. Which usually means they have fast hands and can get in and out without taking shots. This is a good thing...in the amateur game. But if, for instance, Joe's new trainer had fought like that as a pro, who'd have wanted to watch him? Nobody. Unless you are a genuine Roy Jones/Mayweather Jr/SRL freak, you need to get into wars or be murderously aggressive or have huge power or all three if you want to make big money and be popular as a pro. The exceptions to this are few and far between.

No, that's not what I meant. Obviously the promoter is largely responsible for that but a fighter has a certain input aswell. I'm only speculating but maybe he isn't as motivated as he should be, something that Arnie may be able to instil in him.

True - and it is an exclusive arrangement (that is why Crolla had to leave Farnell and went to Gallagher after FW dropped him).

I always think that its a shame when boxers leave a long term coach - both John and Joe started with Gallagher from day one as young amateurs I beleive.

Also, there are very few examokes of boxers leaving a long term trainer and going on to greater future success.

Mark Thompson trains with Arnie and he is not with Frank .

He did have a deal but think it changed as he trained mark heffron for fight abroad, trained mark thompsn for fight in germany, his got matty fagan and mark thompson so he must be able to train other fighters, I think this move could do him well as he fights a bit like butler imo so could work wonders, but sparring won't be as good as ste smith, crolla, cardle, an I know a lot of sparring partners went gallaghers!

No I'm pretty sure he was managed by mike marsden and only trained by joe gall. Its a massive year for joe murray the featherweight division is looking good. Some good fights out their. Selby lindsey smith warrington samir savage and male. I know chris was gutted he never got to fight joe for the english title. His been out the ring nearly 12 months its a long time. Can see him getting a few journeymen fights first to bank Some rounds defo won't b a 50-50 fight
