This certainly would have been a competitve fight. The big question would be if Holmes' jab would keep off Dempsey. Holmes had one of the best jabs ever and should be effective with it, even though Dempsey wasn't the easiest guy to hit.
Holmes had a good chin and could weather the storm if he was hurt. The most likely result would be Holmes winning a decision. However, Dempsey would have a punchers; chance for a KO, and could conceiveably even outhustle Holmes for a decision. I would say Holmes would win 2 out of 3 times.

What does the Bible say about disliking someone like you do Holmes?...wlvrne wrote:Careful, Silkglove, or don't you know what the Bible says about one man calling another a fool?silkov wrote:Fool.... stick to watching wrestling...wlvrne wrote:Larry would have died.

Holmes is a very strong candidate for top 5 in anyones book. It has been noted by many of us that you strongly disagree with this.
However you do not persuede.
Perhaps he should stick to reading the Bible and leave the boxing to us...

Re: Larry Holmes vs Jack Dempsey
Anyone who picks Dempsey in this matchup is in fantasy land.
Dempsey was a tough guy, but Holmes was a master boxer, bigger stronger and faster. Would be no match.
Prime Holmes kayos prime Dempsey within 9 and busts him up in the process.
Dempsey was an overrated fighter. Who did he beat? Jess Willard? That guy was a punching bag with arms. Carpentier? A light heavy. Demspey lost at his peak a non-title fight against Willie Meehan.
He would have absolutely no chance to beat Holmes.

Nine rounds lol. So Dempsey isn't as good as Weaver and Bey, Lucien Rodriguez et al. Berbick kept Holmes moving and working fifteen but Jack Dempsey he dominates and destroys. Holmes fought one guy who modelled his style on Dempsey and wound up splayed unconscious on the canvas.
Tell me a bit more about Fantasy land though.

Re: Larry Holmes vs Jack Dempsey
In my humble opinion Jack Dempsey is criminally overrated. What he did for the sport is legendary but the fact he never could make fights with black happens and had a 3 years lay-off between his fight with Firpo and Tunney makes his legacy a bit less shiny.Onamastus wrote: ↑11 Aug 2020, 08:53

Before Willard I don't think he has a very significant big win apart maybe against Bill Brenan who was called the ''shiftiest two-fisted fighter since Bob Fitzsimmons, and Jess Willard, the heavyweight champion of the world.'' but he was actually nothing more than a tough contender who failed to meet expectations from the public. He also have a lot of first round KO's against tough and experienced men but only because he was the toughest warrior. He did decent bobing and weaving for a heavyweight of his time and was a very hard and vicious puncher who could take his own medecine. Other than that he struggled heavily against every technical fighter he fought. Carpentier outboxed him for 4 rounds before getting caught because he had broke his right hand. Out of the 20 rounds he fought with Tunney he only won 1. He also needed low-blows and extreme unsportmanship and viciousness to get the win from Sharkey and his legendary beating of Willard was mainly caused by the old school rules of boxing and the fact that Willard hadn't fought in 3 years.
Holmes is bigger, taller, stronger, smarter, have a better stamina and have a very good chin. Holmes is stopping Dempsey in the first half of the fight, especially with modern rules. Dempsey might be able to land a big punch here and there but Holmes was able to get up from Shavers hardes right hand. Dempsey is getting out-jabbed, out-punched and out-smarted in this one really. I really don't see anything going in Dempsey favor here but I would pay a lot to see a fantasy fight like this one.
Also the fact that you're seriously saying that Tyson have the same style as Dempsey show you don't know much about Mike Tyson, Jack Dempsey and even boxing in general.
