WHY ARE BOXERS NEVER KNIGHTED OR DAMED?

Post by handsofstone »

It something thats irked me for years why Dick Mctaggart,Audley Harrison,James DeGale etc and now Anthony Joshua,Luke Campbell and Nicola Adams dont get the ultimate honour whearas people like Kelly Holmes.chris hoy do,its ok for them to get multiple medals they get to compete in different events doing the same thing,of course theres more oppurtunities to win more medals.Boxings the ultimate tournament where you have to fight your way to the final.Kelly Holmes runs twice(or something like that) and gets made a dame .typical British snobbery if you ask me,we,ve only had 1 boxing sir :shame:

Lennox should have been knighted years ago.

I don't think a knighthood should be bestowed for a single olympic medal though. Needs to be multiple medals and preferably over a couple of games.

It's all middle class wankery anyway!

Ffs Jimmy Savile still hasn't been stripped of his OBE, maybe they think his charity work far outweighs his rampant noncery.

Lennox Lewis and Joe Calzaghe would be worth recipients of a knighthood for achievements in boxing

Would he have been knighted if he hadn't knocked down Clay? or made a shit aftershave ad? What did Cooper do in the ring that was so special?

Reighning British champion which back then was a lot more healthy. Stuck a legend on his trunks & more importantly was a gentleman & conducted himself outside the ring like a shining example which turds like haye & chisora could do with

Its media influenced anyways.
Cycling has been very popular these last couple years, and absolutely huge this year. Surprise-surprise practically every Olympic medal winning cyclist get an honour. The top honours quite a few too.

If boxing was of a similar popularity then you can guarantee McCracken would have been Knighted for his good work much the same way as Brailsford has been.

I would never class Cooper as a legend. There have been lots of British fighters who did more than Cooper.

Lewis chose to fight for canada and has lived most of his life outside the UK. Possible reasons.

I think that the tradition was in the old days that if you became THE world champion which obviously in the 60's 70's was much easier to determine then you got an MBE. There are a few notable exceptions Alan Rudkin for example was given an MBE for multiple title fights abroad. Now of course it becomes much more diluted and harder for the powers that be to determine who is a worth equivalent these days.

There was a big hoohah about some dual British-Canadian citizen getting knighted a few
years ago and the Canadian government were pretty angry about it so Lennox won't be
getting knighted until he gives up Canadian citizenship, they have their own honours list.

Think Calzaghe needs a few more years to get over his own cocaine snorting stories before being knighted.
Personally I don't think the story here is that boxers aren't knighted easily enough, I think it's more that too many other sportspeople are knighted too easily.

Didn't Rob McCracken pick up an MBE? I'm sure I read somewhere he did, can anyone confirm this? That's also to say it wouldn't be undeserved either. :box: :TU:

Come to think of it, what about Carl Froch getting a gong too? Has he been awarded one? GSTQ.
