Big noggin = better chin?

Oliver McCall's bonce is fairly big & he has arguably the best chin I've ever seen. He hasn't been down in his career & I don't even think he's been hurt in 27 years & counting as a professional, so maybe it is a factor.

good post - i have always had a theory that the hardest guys to ko are also the most intelligent and articulate - in fact I have never been stopped or knocked cold in any fight yet!

People do classify good chins in different ways. People will think I am mad but I actually think Naseem Hamed had a good chin, nigh on all his knockdowns (of which there were obviously many) seemed to be due to balance and his unorthodox style. Best case in point is the Kevin Kelly fight, Hamed kept getting put down but how many times in the fight did you actually think 'hello Hamed is hurt and rocking here' whereas every time Kelly was getting knocked down it was due to pure power from Hamed. It was a similar case against Augie Sanchez when he kept getting put down, he was never actually hurt.

I don't think that's mad at all, I always thought Nas had a good chin. Like you say, every time he was down was balance, more than anything. I honestly can't remember him ever looking hurt.

It's a funny thing, the old chin issue. For me a bigger factor is how quickly you can recover. Calzaghe is a prime example. He hadn't been off his feet until Mitchell, but he impressed me more with how quickly he regained his senses once he went down, I thought he was gone when he hit the deck that first time.

I really can't see it being about the size of ones head. If you take a full on 'didn't see it coming' head shot.your a goner. A lot of fighters will take a big shot & get up before they should. Or go walking in while their head is still buzzed. If you can get up, run. Hold. Hit up the nuts and do what it takes to see out the round. At times it's all about intelligence

Chisora has a MAAAAAAAAAAAASIVE head.

He takes a pretty mean shot flush on.

He also has huge shoulders and a huge neck.

But yep, I assume a big head, needs a big thick skull to protect it's big brain.

So these guys with proportionately bigger heads will be harder to knockdown if they are top level boxers, in my medical opinion!

So does Valuev but Haye is so explosive his punches would knock out a horse or prob dinosaur so even the most durable fighters, biggest heads, neck, shoulders etc would have less chance when hit on the right spot

My head is like a wizened bollock. I have been put down only three times in the two rounds that I managed to spar. Got up clear as a bell and ready for proper war. I don`t believe in hitting birds, but she was going full pelt and I reckon that justified it.

What I find stranger than a good chin, is the mammoth power in the majority of wide boys who tell their stories in the boozer. It always tends to go like this.

" I hit him.......... (gang of meathead mates hold their breath in suspense)....................................................................he went darn" (gang of meathead mates nod their approval and repeat to each other that he went down)

You can`t beat the pause for effect before the obligatory "he went down"
