He may make a good pro, but there's a huge way to go yet. There's not many Olympians that cross over that well from this country.
Re: Anthony Ogogo signed with Golden Boy Promotions
Game gutsy lad but I don't think he has the toughness at top level
Re: Anthony Ogogo signed with Golden Boy Promotions
Not an amatuer boxing fan but that Brazilian lad schooled him in the semi's hope he turns over and doesn't wait for Rio.
Good luck to Anthony comes accross as a sound guy. Anyone have any idea on the TV deal for Goldenboy in the UK.
Also I know Schaefer raves over Anthony Joshua wouldn't suprise me if he joins them after the Worlds next year.

Re: Anthony Ogogo signed with Golden Boy Promotions
I like Ogogo, good guy.
But honestly, he was one medallist that should have stayed on for Rio. Too easy to nail and don't think the pro game would suit him.
Would love to eat my words, mind.

Re: Anthony Ogogo signed with Golden Boy Promotions
Well, at least he will be matched pretty well. No out of shape Latvians, no hopers, fighters coming up in weight, powder puff punchers, false hype etc, for him.
You never know, with the schooling he will recieve, he might actually get better insted having no improvement as is the norm with prospects who sign with the 'Big' alleged promoters over here.
Tough choice, but a good one. He is a ballsy kid no doubt, and that counts for a lot.

Re: Anthony Ogogo signed with Golden Boy Promotions
I wonder who will be his trainer?
Re: Anthony Ogogo signed with Golden Boy Promotions
Schaefer does not have a clue about boxing or boxers!
Golden boy has never honed any talent.
They basically seal the deal & do the deed

He knows plenty about the sport, that's why Golden Boy Promotions is still operating.
Re: Anthony Ogogo signed with Golden Boy Promotions

They do have prospects, but they also do the smart thing.... let someone hone the talent and then sign them.hurlock wrote:The business yes!

I'm looking forward to seen what Golden Boy plan on bringing over here? Wonder if Ogogo will make his pro debut on the Amir Khan April card? - seems logical. I think Ogogo will make a nice pro. I'd like to see him with Adam Booth

Tough matches over in America though. The journeymen there are a more fearsome breed than in the UK ...I am presuming here he'll be based in America a lot?!
Re: Anthony Ogogo signed with Golden Boy Promotions
'Latvian' was the 1st thing that came into my head and in hindsight, Eastern European would have been a much more accurate description. So I apologies if this offended anyone.joelouis1234 wrote:With regards to the 'out of shape' Latvian stereotype I think the main issue lies with certain 'out of date' Promoters who constantly insist on bringing over Eastern Europeans and foreigners in general who have the worst records going in order to get an almost guaranteed win for their ticket sellers thus depriving the paying public out of their hard earning cash and subjecting them to predictable, boring, repetitive one sided fights in which everyone knows who the winner is going to be.For the record there are plenty of 'in shape and very live opponents' from Eastern Europe in particular who are being kept out of boxing in the UK by boring Promoters only interested in making money at the expense of featuring 'real 50/50 fights' Instead of harping on and on about 'out of shape fat Latvians' maybe better to start demanding that Promoters start bringing over Eastern European and other foreign boxers who are being kept out in the cold because they can actually fight! Steve Goodwin is the only Promoter out there that actually does this at the moment.
What Golden boy do do is match their fighters much harder than any Promoter over here You can bet that the likes of Allegedly would have been after Ogogo and is probably courting Joshua but I really do believe the message is getting home. You want to earn some money, pick up am inter / penta / benelux paper belt, build up an (false but the dippy public always go for it) impressive KO record, beating up opponents in 95%-5% / 100%-0% matches, then the thing to do is sign for someone like Allegedly, for example.
Now if you have genuine ambitions, want to test yourself and to improve (yes, fighters can get better) and have a shot at making SERIOUS money, your better off with someone like Golden Boy. They will match you much harder but if a fighter improves and is good enough, he will earn far, far more respect and not to mention a lot more money.
Not sure if some of our former Olympians had any influence on the Olympians of this year but, its all there for them to see.

Why would he be based in America? He has zero fans over there, boxing in a marginalised sport in the US now, and it takes a while for their homegrown talent to get a following , let alone an unknown British boxer.
The only time the American public would of seen him, might of been the semi final of the boxing, which hardly went his way at all.

It may be becuase the refs don`t stop it after a three punch slap flurry. Over there you have to actually finish your opponent off. Only a goo dthing for a prospect to be honest. No point going through your early career thinking all you have to do to get the win is to throw a few combinations.Final round wrote:Why are they more challenging over there? Re: Anthony Ogogo signed with Golden Boy Promotions
All Schaeffer is looking at is 'crossover appeal' he's not interested in whether Ogogo is the goods or not. What with Celeb BB, Subway and the Olympics, Goldenboy know they have a good foundation of publicity to build on.
Ogogo, was an awkward amateur who didn't box the way he should have, given his athletic abilities. I don't think he'll make a great Pro. I could be wrong. But look how the much more pro styled Brazilian played with him in the Semi's and dropped him.
Good luck to him, hopefully he goes with a trainer who can get him to use his attributes better. I'll be supporting his career.
The Japanese kid who won the gold at Middle in the Olympics would make a terrific pro.

I can remember Manny Steward being very dismissive of a lot of British fighters, implying that they were generally a bit soft and far more likely to wilt psychologically when things got brutal than their American counterparts are. He was definitely surprised, for instance, by John Murray's fortitude against Rios and said as much in commentary. There's probably some truth in what he says, there are plenty of tomato cans in the States who are even more inept than some of the bums knocking around the UK, but the guys who breakthrough are almost always the product of seriously intense sparring and often amateur careers of 100 fights plus. The Yanks definitely throw a lot of eggs at the walls and most of the break. Truly survival of the fittest.Final round wrote:Why are they more challenging over there? In the UK, fighters frequently get on television, build large followings and get manoeuvred into title fights when they're not actually that hard or that good, compared to Americans given the same level of exposure.
Re: Anthony Ogogo signed with Golden Boy Promotions
Lockett, Jennings, Hunter, recent history is littered with British fighters shown up to be way, way out of their depth when stepping up to title class and proceed to pretty much end their careers afterwards. Having the one off tough fights against the likes of Rhodes, Pryce and Pickering did nothing to prepare them for the step up in classJLP wrote:I can remember Manny Steward being very dismissive of a lot of British fighters, implying that they were generally a bit soft and far more likely to wilt psychologically when things got brutal than their American counterparts are.
