Bobby Chacon vs Bazooka Limon IV...30 years later

Post by elmersalsa »

This fight, Chacon vs Bazooka Limon IV, was probably, alongside Leonard vs Hearns I, the best fight that I have ever seen. What a fight! Both were throwing and matching blow for blow for 15 full rounds. This was probably the last of the 15-round great fights. How do you score this fight? And, what were your reactions when you saw this slugfest?

One of my favorite fighters, Bobby Chacon, won his second world title on November 11th, 1982. After considered washed up by the press. Bazooka and Bobby were warriors.

Any fight that keeps Pryor-Arguello I from being Fight of the Year is something special.

Chacon-Limon IV is the greatest fight I have ever seen. I had it 142-140 Chacon, he really pulled it out in those 'Championship' rounds for me and the knock-down in the 15th was the pièce de résistance.

The second round is one of my favourites too.

I had Chacon by 3 (143-140, I think). What a great two months with this fight, Pryor/Arguello I and Gomez/Pintor.

Am old enough to remember watching Gomez/Pintor and Chacon/Limon in '82 and wondering if any of the fighters involved would ever be the same. Simply amazing wars of attrition and momentum shifts that stand the test of time. Gomez and Pintor both went on to win other belts. Chacon beat Boza-Edwards in another great war in '83 before getting smoked by Mancini, and Limon never won another meaningful fight.

What a great year, 1982...Leonard vs Hagler would have been the icing in the cake.

A great slugfest, but I have to admit I always thought it was slightly over-rated. Think Gomez-Pintor and Chacon-Edwards were actually better fights . . .
