Froch as a middleweight.
Froch as a middleweight.
Why's he never dropped down? He always seems very easy doing SM, he often talks about being on the weight weeks out.

can i be an asre and counter your question with a question
why would he?
i see no good reason
theres been plenty for him in SMW for years and there still is for another 3-4 fights. that should take him close to retirement
Re: Froch as a middleweight.
You're not being an arse, it's a good question.
Middleweight is one of the original divisions (well, it's been around since the 1840s) and being a linear champion at that weight is, in terms of a historical legacy, more significant than being a champion at supermiddleweight.

Re: Froch as a middleweight.
Super middle weight is my favourite division i think most middle weights aspire to be smw's if they can.
Re: Froch as a middleweight.
To some degree any division is only as good as the fighters operating within it but, on the other hand, there are definitely some divisions that are more highly regarded on a continuum than others. I love the cruiserweight division and I think it could be the most exciting division in the sport; fit, powerful, fast, skilled 200 pounders are more interesting, to me, than mechanical 240 pounders. But, particularly in the USA, the division is generally held in low regard. In the UK we have had a procession of very successful fighters in the super-middleweight division and it is certainly a very popular division in this country. Globally, though, it is not such a big deal. I disagree that most middleweights aspire to be super-middleweights. I'd say that those middleweights with a keen eye for boxing history and the ability to win titles in multiple divisions would rank light-heavyweight far higher on their aspirations list than super-middleweight.Finn wrote:Super middle weight is my favourite division i think most middle weights aspire to be smw's if they can.
Re: Froch as a middleweight.
The middle weight is historically popular but smw is a relatively new division. Since it started it has been this counties stellar division, people want to emulate their heros. Just as the cruisers seem to want to make it to the HW division. The US fighters favoured the mw and LHW divisions to the smw but now are starting to show more interest in the smw.The Dark Destroyer wrote:Why do you think that? Re: Froch as a middleweight.
Perhaps Froch is the type whose weight does not fluctuate too much between fights.
Most seem to lose a lot of weight before fights, maybe Froch has it right.

Re: Froch as a middleweight.
Froch trains to improve rather than to make the weight.
No co-incidence that he's one of the few fighters that has improved as he's gone well past 30.

Re: Froch as a middleweight.
I think that, being a career SMW, moving down to 160 and winning anything of note would appear less of an achievement than staying at SMW and fighting the competitive fighters there - Kessler or Ward rematch - or moving up to LHW.

Re: Froch as a middleweight.
Some fighters prefer to fight close to their natural weight, for obvious reasons.
Re: Froch as a middleweight.
I seem to remember McCracken saying in an interview that Froch could make middleweight, but 'wouldn't be the same fighter' if he boiled down to 160.

Re: Froch as a middleweight.
I actually think that this sort of thing will become more normal in the coming few years thanks to the likes of Froch and Mayweather...I might be wrong and super drainers may continue but I think some are seeing the effects of draining too much.markfightoptions wrote:Some fighters prefer to fight close to their natural weight, for obvious reasons.
Re: Froch as a middleweight.
I've recently read quite a lot of people mentioning froch being a small super!!
The guy is a freak who has a massive frame with a very healthy bmi.froch is like a strong l. Heavy. Has a reach worthy of cruiserweight along with his frame.
The fact an athlete can walk around 4lbs over there fighting weight should be applauded for true professionalism

Re: Froch as a middleweight.
The only times I've seen Froch look 'small' at 168lbs were against Bute and Pascal. Both the fact that Pascal moved up to light-heavy immediately after their fight and his lethargy in the second half of the fight would suggest that draining to super-middle was rather hard for him. As for Bute, draining doesn't seem to have helped him at all, chin or stamina wise.
On the flip side, Froch looked huge against Abraham (who can't make 160 anymore and seems to be trapped between weights). I remember John Scully saying once that fighters just kind of weigh what they weigh; some are better than others at draining down than others. As hurlock said, Froch is one of those rare fighters that walks around close to his fighting weight without actually being small for the weight, but seemingly would really struggle to get down further. His chin and stamina might not be the same at MW, and he really trades on those assets.
I remember having a debate on here with someone about Froch's size relative to Cleverly - as I remember, they had it that Cleverly walking around at 190ish while Froch walks around in the mid-170s makes him a good stone heavier muscle/frame-wise. I don't think that's the case, I think it's just that Froch puts on very little between fights and Cleverly puts on a normal amount; Cleverly is probably a bit bigger, but not a stone or so.

Better fight at middleweight imo for him style wise at the minute Martinez, Chavez, GGG, Macklin Barker and Murray

Re: Froch as a middleweight.
I always thought he should go up to 175. He has a huge frame for a Super Middle and it must be hard to keep dragging himself down to 168.
Maybe if he didnt have to dry out to 168, he might rediscover his "pop" he has fought a lot of 12 round decisions over the last few years.

I dont believe for 1 minute that Frotch walks around at 172 pounds. He is probably well over 172 the night before the weigh in..
He is easily 178 pounds when he gets in the ring after rehydrating the day after the weigh in.
Re: Froch as a middleweight.
how much of that is do to with the fact that, since Pascal, he has almost exclusively, apart from the Mack fight, been mixing at a higher level than before?

He doesn't want to move up to Lhw, Nathan Cleverley is waiting for him

Since starting this topic I've had a PM from a decent source who says he doesn't have to drag himself down or cut weight before the weigh-in.Khaosai-Galaxy wrote:I always thought he should go up to 175. He has a huge frame for a Super Middle and it must be hard to keep dragging himself down to 168.

No but I did get one wrongly delivered from a pregnant 13-year-old Thai girl trying to track down the "Walkden Lothario".Khaosai-Galaxy wrote:Did you also get a PM from Father Christmas on the 25th December?JLP wrote:Since starting this topic I've had a PM from a decent source who says he doesn't have to drag himself down or cut weight before the weigh-in.Khaosai-Galaxy wrote:I always thought he should go up to 175. I forgot about the insane Carl Froch cult on Boxrec. Thanks for reminding me.
