Very few other people seemed interested and those I did attempt to expose to the sport all churned out the now hackneyed "it's like two blokes outside the pub", "it looks gay" criticisms before just lulling into a glazed boredom. So why has it taken off and become the almighty success that it now is? I think it's largely down to personalities and the creation/promotion thereof. And in that, it's no different than boxing. Hype is an obvious key ingredient in both sports. This actually applies to most sports.

You have the participants, coaches, hangers-on, meddlers and anoraks. And then you have the sloshing mob of consumers who'll buy into anything that's fizzy and shiny.
Just out of interest what are the crowds like who attend the MMA/UFC events? I appreciate that there will be a range of people and that boxing gets more than its fair share of knobheads attending but for some reason I've always imagined the atmosphere at MMA/UFC shows to be pretty hostile.
Total opposite mate... i have been to 6 ufc events and only ever saw 1 fight that was one twat who was pissed in the bogs.
On a whole the fans are all friendly and its almost like a gang or underground movement..hard to explain, on way to events at service stations and bars etc your see ppl in mma apparel and you ask you off to UFC today and its always friendly and good laugh very genuine excitement. The reason for this is theres no football club associations with any fighters so dont get "the crews or firms" following a fighter like at the boxing that can cause loads of shit.
I have found the audiences at UFC events to be somewhat at odds with typical UK MMA promotions. A bit more bubblegum pop.

It is fairly obvious, I would like to see a MMA fighter dabble against a top level pro in boxing though, boxers have a chance of knocking out an MMA fighter when they step in a octagon, an MMA fighter has zero chance against a boxer in a boxing ring.
Ray Mercer Vs Tim Sylvia

the exception that proves the rule (or whatever)

Beat me to it.

Mercer was like 48 and fat aswell.

I know an MMA Fighter called Brent Crawley who is an exceptional boxer .

did well in the ams and is a regular visitor of boxing gyms across nottingham to do a bit of sparring.

hes without doubt pro standard as a boxer ,of course im not saying he would win titles etc but he would beat a lot of pros around his weight .

In the main id suggest any boxer going into mma and any mma guy going into boxing are usually going to struggle .....but there are definate exceptions .

It was a rude awakening, I woke up next day like i'd been run over. The guy made a total mess of my front leg cos I was too side on from boxing.

Saying that, I don't enjoy watching it much. Think boxing is more asthetically pleasing.
You do learn how to take a breather and relax as you get more experienced but I agree that muscularly, MMA is more gruelling than boxing. Remember, though, if you've been boxing, or doing any sport, for a long time, you often forget how taxing it was on the body when you first got into it. You've got to give yourself time to adapt to new sports.

I like watching any combat sport but, like you, boxing is by far and away my favourite.
Oh no doubt. When I was fully healed (goes to show the world of hurt I was in) I went back cos it was bugging me I didn't do myself justice. This time, knowing what to expect, I gave a slightly better account of myself (still came off worse, but wasn't quite as disgraceful/blowing out my arse).I'm too old really for competitive combat sports (Im 36 and the lad i faced, who had debuted professionally the week previous, was just 22), but it reinforced the notion that u cant "wing" any of these sports. I would never entertain sparring that out of shape again. Basically, full respect to anyone who gives it a go.

Ah good old Michael "The Count" Bisping, universally hated in MMA because he's a bigmouthed moron, before being gloriously flattened and humiliated by Dan Henderson

asked about the flying elbow he delivered to Bisping while Bisping lay already unconscious on the floor, soft-spoken Henderson said "That was just to shut his mouth"

Bisping is just using Tysons outburst to buy himself some publicity, Bisping is Britains best known MMA fighter bar none....and still nobody gives a shit about him(but hey, boxing is dying and MMA is taking over...right? ;) ), so hey "Tyson Fury caled out Cain Velazquez?, I have something to say about that! please listen to me!"

typical Bisping, Fury and Velazquez will never so much as be in the same room together and everybody knows it

where's Dan Henderson when you need him?

However, I seem to remember Haye making some very interesting comments a while back on how difficult he found it fighting against an MMA fighter when he'd done some training with one and they had a bit of a "sparring" session. He said he found it impossible to get any sort of power into his punches once he'd inevitably been taken down to the ground and that basically if a boxer doesn't connect with the first shot he's pretty much got no chance of winning the fight. I'll try and dig out the link.

Also we obviously all saw what happened to James Toney when he tried to dabble.

Fury is probably underestimating how difficult it would be against this guy even though he's only 6'1.
This has been proved countless times. Once a boxer gets taken down he is buggered unless he has learnt some kind of ground game, whether that be how to get back to your feet effectively, or actual grappling itself.

Yeah in that he talks like a 6 year old child trying to write a poem in a Primary school english lesson.

That says more about what a fornicating shitbag Henderson is (i just hope some fornicate knocks his false teef out whilst prone on the floor) the Ufc fans would lap it up...There was no chance to tap out there was there! if that was boxing he'd get vilified. Imagine if Martinez had done that too Williams or Marquez to Pacquiao.

gotta say up to a few years ago i hated the mma scene but have really warmed to it now only cos my pal former pro boxer tony moran has stepped over to the mma,and is doing well at it :TU: thing is i was a tradionalist of the noble art,but have to admit after seeing many of them fights live it is a good night and entertaining. as for the boxer v mma i would have to say a mma fighter everytime cos has more in his armour,i mean unless a boxer throws a shot and kayos him but a mma fighter wouldnt give him that chance,he,d just take him down and choke him out, youve only gotta see the footage of couture thrashing toney,he didnt stand a chance :(

I'd say a decent boxer has much more chance of making it in mma the a mma fighter has of making it in boxing!
I'd say boxing is more harder & dis heartening as you are limited to throwing punches only.mma do have to learn a lot of disciplines but can be extremely creative with tactics & easily nullify there opponents strengths.
8 out 10 boxers get batterd in a cage!! Overall it's the closest thing to real life or death combat & mma will tie you in knots & ground & pound you.

Not an MMA fan so excuse my ignorance here, but...

...isn't it like comparing apples with oranges?

Is it like asking world darts champion Phil Taylor to beat a pro archery player?

Who is phil Taylor representing??

A lot of mma guys are from disciplines like Greco wrestling were they don't have pro/paid ranks or ju jitsu they learn stand up & kicking etc.

These wrestling guys if they become 40% ok with there hands they are lethal!!
They do tend to be extremely tough & strong.

Take a guy like Paul bonson ex rugby player with no ability but just so strong & tough imaging if he had a dig or was aloud to throw you to the floor. Basically you can't keep these guys off!& to say with boxing skills alone to beat these fighters is ridiculous you have to respect mma it is very dangerous

hurlock you are bang on the money mate :TU: these ppl dont know what they are talkin about,a boxer wouldnt stand a chance..fact! i love boxing but when it comes to the bare bones these seasoned mma,ufc are lethal, they would take a boxer down instantly and smash the granny out them. my pal tony moran a former pro cruiserweight says that everytime,he said boxing is nowt compared to that as its brutality in them cages. so yea marquis of queensbury is no match for the mma,get a grip whoever slags this sport is all i can say :box:

I bet tony is finding it easier tho!
Boxing is harder to do as its a fine art & if you can't punch & don't have speed your pretty knackerd.
Mma can look more brutal but boxing is far more damaging as you rarely see mma fighters slur etc.
If truth be told I respect boxers more because stand up is the ultimate challenge.

I have to say I always enjoyed training MMA more but don't watch it and didn't enjoy training boxing but am obsessed.

Nobody with any sense would stand up with Fury. Everyone would take him to the ground. Don't box a boxer, don't kick a kicker etc. If you know somebody is very good in one area, then you do your best to nullify that.

But we all know it's just hype to get us talking. And here we are.

In your opinion maybe, but I totally disagree. Punching is the most basis technique, any clown can throw a haymaker and get success. Boxing doesnt replicate a true (no-holds barred) fight where kicks, grappling and elbows are common.

Muay Thai/Wrestling/Judo/BJJ are much more sophisticated fighting systems and are much more difficult to master.

To be fair, MMA doesn't replicate a true no holds barred fight either. Try using MMA in a street fight and you'll get the geezers mates stamping on your head. If you end up in a fight in the pub a good dig is your best way out, so in that environment I'd give the boxer the edge.

If you're talking about some Van Damme film no rules tournament one on one style sh*t, then yeah, I've got the MMA guy.

if punching is the most basic then why is it the one MMA guys are the worst at? some of them are embarrassing, Gsp learned to use a jab from Freddie Roach and he dismantled Josh Koscheck whos sole arsenal consisted of throwing an overhand right over, and over, and over again...what makes it worse, is that Koscheck had actually KOd a string of guys with that technique!!! :OhYes:

Michael Bisping, the so called "kickboxing expert" got outboxed and schooled by MATT HAMILL....MATT fornicating HAMILL of all people

I don't know why you're on a boxing forum if you're going to show it this much disdain..

And MMA isn't no holds barred either, everything I would use in a street fights, biting, headbutts, weapons, eye gouging, small joint manipulation, are all illegal in MMA. Not to mention, as somebody else said, the very common possibility of friends jumping in. What good is your BJJ if I start taking a chunk out of you with my teeth? Or if my friend starts stamping on your head? Not very good at all is it.

See this is an attitude I hate about MMA fighters and fans, that MMA is "real fighting"...no, it really isn't.
