The Pea - Open and Candid

Post by NazNaci1 »

In a requested interview with 'Powers that Be' magazine, interviewer Maz Durkin was spoke briefly with Pernell The Pea' Whitaker, to see how things have been progressing for this legendary fighter and how he has found SIM world and the 'politics'. This is a brief extract from the interview. The Pea was both forthright and open about his feelings..

MD: Hi Pea
PW: Wazzup

MD: Hows things?
PW: Good, no great actually. We are kicking some ass and we got a lot more to come baby.

MD: Ah yes, the SIM Championship. How have you found the Tourney to date? Harder, easier? Fair?
PW: Well, to be honest, there are some strong competition. Guys who are surprisingly good and deserve respect. Same applies to the managers. Some of them are ballsy and happy to get their guy's to go at it.

MD: So its been good, so far?
PW: Thing is, you expect everyone to be like you and your manager. But they ain't. Some are just blatantly working the 'system', then calling themselves all' dat!, when they ain't. they ain't s***.

MD: You mean some cheat?
PW: Listen, I wouldn't go that far. No one 'cheats' but they pick on the weakest, the easiest and road of least resistence. And then brag. Can't be understanding that s***. You fight and fight the best. Don't brag when the challenges are still out there. Brag AFTER you iz done.

MD: Seems some people have upset you?
PW: Nah man, I am cool but people need to get the *expletive* real with this. I am the man. I have lost a couple of fights, sure, but people like Harry Greb aint no joke. And even the very, very few losses have been split or majority decisions. and one on a cut. Never been KO'd and owned top fighters all the way. All the way, man.

MD: I get it. You feel the respect is not there and...
PW: Nah man, the respect is there. Why? Because we do it the right way, the hard way. People like Duran and his man pick and choose, you get me. They don't rank. And they know what happens if they ever get in the SIM Ring with The Pea.

MD: What does happen?
PW: We clean up, baby. Belts or no belts. It's about respect and these guys are fake. They cherry pick and dodge. They need to step up.

MD: Do you think Duran and his manager will ever take the fight?
PW: As I said, people need to step. What do I think? If they balls up at some point between now and the end of the tourney and 'step up', they will get 'beat down'. It's really that simple.

MD: Ok thanks, Pea. I think we understand.
PW: Yeah, we are here and we have the IBO belt. Duran had it and gave it away, I mean what's that? I have had 1 shot all season, despite being one of the very best. 1 shot @ the Lonsdale and we won it. One shot @ the IBO and we won that. We don't lose title shots, we win them and we will own that *expletive* Duran's ass. He and his manager both know it.

MD: Duran is fighting Pep for all the belts and....
PW: (getting animated) Yeah, and Duran thinks that this is some kind of 'ultimate match up'. Pep beat his ass and I drew twice with Pep, dropping him on the way. 1st fight with Pep was close but the 2nd should have gone my way. I ain't got nothing bad to say about Pep though. He fights and he fights hard but I look forward to fighting him again.

MD: So, to you it appears that some are out to create a false 'legacy'?
PW: You bet, but this s*** is real deal. To Duran, all I say is, fight me before the SIM season is through. Belts don't come into it. you bragging you all dat. You aint and its gonna take me to show you.

MD: Well we have to wrap up, Pea.
PW: Yeah cool, bro. Peace.

The full interview is available in this months edition and retails for $4.50 / £2.70.

Where is Peas record?

He isn't even top ten.

Duran's record is awesome. :TU:

After Pep and Duran fight, Gene Tunney, Benny Leonard, Harry Grebb, Joe Louis & Sugar Ray Robinson are the true challengers.

Maybe you should be calling one of them out instead of harping on about your lack of achievements?

Yes, yes it is. Though is one black mark, one stain which can never be removed....

W10 CHARLIE ZELENOFF: TKO3 :o

As for the rest of the post ..

Go check out Pea's record. In his 5 draws, he was leading in 4 of the total cards and level in one other. 2 losses on cuts in fights he was winning clearly and his record would read 20-6. Comparable with Duran's and no Zelenoff's in sight.

He has beaten numerous fighters who were ranked 2, 3 and 4 in the Top 10 and never got the boost. I think most agree that this system is flawed. So I accept you apologies for this oversight :TU:

The Juiced Gym will continue on its path, looking for the best fighters to test themselves. Though whilst our intentions are always honourable we require other managers of similar mindsets to reach this Utopia. There are certainly fighters and managers of good stock and it those who we will seek out.

Your attempt at spin is admirable and whilst this 'more shame on your' manoeuvre is worthy of a politician in Govt (and we all know what we think of them) it is in no way a slight on those amazing fighters. Greb has beaten Duran and The Pea handiy, Tunney has a fine resume, ditto Leonard, Louis and Robinson.

Your veiled attack will not be tolerated, sir. We see through the Renegade Master's attempts to cause 'division'. Stand you ground, sir. We enter the fray as honourable men and will not tolerate such false and scandalous accusations. I would send Henry and Pernell around to your office, for a 'visit' however without wishing to upset Pep and DEG (as well as the fact that we have no idea where your office is), I will refrain from such dramatic measures.

The shame is on you, sir :shame:

We can accept this, however seeing as Leonard is coming off a loss, the IBO Title cannot be on the line as that would be unfair to those who could have a shot.

If the Commish allow this as a 'non title' fight, we have no issue with that and Leonard can have 'a piece'. If, however, The Pea is expected to defend his title, then we will honour that and go with someone eligible,

Frazier started late, so he can't compete for points, but is the WTF champ, and often wipes the floor with the "elite".

So remain humble, drink your milk, and continue to aspire to greatness, and YOUR fighters may achieve the cred that the former Lonsdale champ and Current WTF champ enjoys. GBP managed fighters always tend to over achieve based on the blood sweat and tears of hard work, discipline, and ethical congruety.

Joe is the peoples champ.

Unlike some, we are happy to 'sign this up'. Though Juiced Gym needs clarification on this ruling. We will not relinquish our title, so if it can be a 'non title bout, then we happy accept.

If not, as Leonard lost his last fight, we will not relinquish but select a suitable, dangerous and worthy contender.

Just sign the fight noob. All the lineages are being tied up in this weeks match-up. No need for you to start creating a mess from the Title you were ''allowed'' a shot at, after the great Roberto earned, owned & presented the Title to you.

Some noobs just have no respect... you think your doing them a favour, yet they're just WANT WANT WANT. I dunno, I really don't :shame:

Not sure what the "title questions" are. However, anyone can face anyone......WTF and IBO can not be held with the big boy belts. However they could be unified.

Frazier owns the WTF.....and we are open minded.

DEG has called us out. So the decent thing to do would be to allow him this opportunity. Opportunities which have for the vast part of this season have been declined to my fighters. However we are cut from a different cloth and therefore will accept this 'challenge'.

Mr Buzz, I, like you, would like nothing more than to unify these belts however this is a matter of honour and, as you can appreciate being a man of honour yourself, needs to be addressed.

Whitaker - Benny Leonard - SIGNED!

PS Mr Duckran's manager has been particurlarly vociferious in making this match 'happen'. Should our web footed friend manage to navigate his way past Pep (ducks do have a good sense of direction), we, at Juiced Gym will be interested to see if his eagerness to match The Pea extends to matching him against he-ran-duran.

Commendable, but we now want our rubber match with Pep, for all the marbles. We fought back to back twice in the first two weeks, I think it is fitting. Not to mention, The Pea deserves it.
