Tyson Fury 'living in a fantasy world' says British UFC star
Re: Tyson Fury 'living in a fantasy world' says British UFC star
OK...how about a top MMA fighter, Andersen Silva or GSP, in a boxing ring under boxing rules?
I really aren't being flippant here, just generally intrigued on what people who know their MMA think?

Re: Tyson Fury 'living in a fantasy world' says British UFC star
Because punching is a relatively less technical and cruder discipline than many others in mma, and isnt focused upon as much. Plus punchers can largely be successfully nullified by good wrestlers and so its usefulness isnt so great in MMA.GreenLightning wrote: if punching is the most basic then why is it the one MMA guys are the worst at? some of them are embarrassing, Gsp learned to use a jab from Freddie Roach and he dismantled Josh Koscheck whos sole arsenal consisted of throwing an overhand right over, and over, and over again...what makes it worse, is that Koscheck had actually KOd a string of guys with that technique!!!
Acelino Freitas wasnt the best technical boxer, relatively speaking but his power got him an awful long way in the sport. Punch power is largely genetic.
Exactly mate, youre supporting my argument re: Koscheck and his lack of boxing ability.... yet he still scores knockout success! Sorry to educate you, but Koscheck's major strength is his wrestling and not his boxing.
Sorry mate, have to disagree. I was at the O2 and watched that fight live. Hamill should have got the decision because he bullied Bisping with his aggression and wrestling. However IMO Hamill did not outbox Bisping.GreenLightning wrote: Michael Bisping, the so called "kickboxing expert" got outboxed and schooled by MATT HAMILL....MATT effing HAMILL of all people
Are you for real?? What 'disdain' have I shown?? And to what??GreenLightning wrote: I don't know why you're on a boxing forum if you're going to show it this much disdain..
I merely (dared) disagreed with you that boxing wasnt the 'ultimate challenge', which i genuinely dont think it is! I think MMA is far more taxing and gruelling. This is a discussion forum after all!! Unbelievable.......
Have you ever heard of Vale Tudo in Brazil?? Now tell me MMA isnt no-holds barred (biting isnt however permitted, granted). You try biting someone when youre being choked to death in a rear naked choke... you simply wouldnt be able to. The risk of an MMA fighter being attacked whilst fighting another equally applies to a boxer in the same situation. An MMA fighter doesnt necessarily mean ground-fighting.GreenLightning wrote: And MMA isn't no holds barred either, everything I would use in a street fights, biting, headbutts, weapons, eye gouging, small joint manipulation, are all illegal in MMA. Not to mention, as somebody else said, the very common possibility of friends jumping in. What good is your BJJ if I start taking a chunk out of you with my teeth? Or if my friend starts stamping on your head? Not very good at all is it.
See this is an attitude I hate about MMA fighters and fans, that MMA is "real fighting"...no, it really isn't.
For the record im not saying MMA fighters are indestructable, I just think that their more rounded fighting skills are better suited to no-holds barred fighting.
I love boxing, im just not so closed minded and ignorant so as to refuse to acknowledge the very obvious virtues of other sports... and no, that doesnt equate to a 'disdain' of boxing. There is the ability to appreciate both sports.
Re: Tyson Fury 'living in a fantasy world' says British UFC star
I like both sports and think that if a top MMA champion were to box, in a ring, with boxing gloves, under boxing rules against a boxing champion the same weight they would get wiped out. It is the grappling skills and ground work that make the MMA fighters so effective and dangerous.milpool wrote:OK...how about a top MMA fighter, Andersen Silva or GSP, in a boxing ring under boxing rules?

Spot on. Not to mention use of the environment (I.e. bouncing someone's head off the curb), strikes to the groin or base of the spine, ripping out clumps of hair, spitting, ripping ears/soft flesh areas etc...GreenLightning wrote:if punching is the most basic then why is it the one MMA guys are the worst at? some of them are embarrassing, Gsp learned to use a jab from Freddie Roach and he dismantled Josh Koscheck whos sole arsenal consisted of throwing an overhand right over, and over, and over again...what makes it worse, is that Koscheck had actually KOd a string of guys with that technique!!!liamlion wrote:In your opinion maybe, but I totally disagree. Theres a certain arrogance in a section of mma practitioners, usually average ones, that believe without dispute they have found the golden ticket to invincibility. I tend to find the better they actually are, the more humble and open minded they tend to be.

I posted this on another forum some time back, but I don't think that I ever posted it here.

To the best of my knowledge, there have been six (or five depending on how you look at it) boxers who have held credible world titles (for the purposes of this thread defined as WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF) that have competed in MMA. Pro wrestling double crosses don't count. Nor does whatever the fornicate you want to call Ali/Inoki. Also, I'm only counting male fighters as well. There have been a few female boxers who have won credible professional boxing world titles and have also competed in MMA. Elena Reid for instance is one. Jessica Rakoczy is another.
Anyway, the list...
- James Warring (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... at=boxer): Who fought in a one night tournament in 1995. He beat his first opponent (a guy called Jerome Turcan), then beat Erik Paulson before losing in the final to Renzo Gracie. It should be noted that the tournament was divided into a strikers and a grapplers bracket with the winners meeting in the final in a full MMA bout. I believe that in the strikers bracket (which Warring won) no submissions were allowed. His MMA adventure took place just over three years after he had lost the IBF Cruiserweight Title. He might be the closest thing to a prime high-level boxer competing in MMA. Before he became a pro boxer Warring had won world titles in kickboxing.
James Warring's fight with Renzo Gracie is below. I would very much like to see Warring's first two fights (especially the one with Paulson) but I couldn't find them online. Alas, I can but hope. Anyway, below is Warring/Gracie from 1995.
James Warring Vs Renzo Gracie (World Combat Championship 1- First Strike) (October 17, 1995) (Charlotte, North Carolina)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFWmQKyReQk
- Ray Mercer (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... at=boxer): Fought two MMA bouts. Lost to Kimbo in a bout that was classified an exhibition due to the New Jersey State Athletic Commission refusing to sanction it. Knocked out Tim Sylvia in eighteen seconds in his second foray into MMA.

- Imamu Mayfield (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?cat=bo ... _id=5606): Mayfield was IBF cruiserweight champion for a period in 1997/1998. He fought, and got submitted by, Kazuyuki Fujita at Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2003 in a bout with slightly modified rules. Dave Meltzer touched on the bout in a piece he wrote for Yahoo around the time that James Toney was in the UFC. I will rip off Big Dave's description of the rules.

- François Botha (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... at=boxer): This is the contentious one. In October of 1995 Botha beat Axel Schulz by decision to win the vacant IBF World Heavyweight Title. He then failed the drug test for roids. He was stripped of the title and his victory over Schulz was declared a no-contest. He did win a world title in the ring though so you can count him if you want. Anyway, he fought Akiyama, and lost by submission, on New Year's Eve 2004.

Re: Tyson Fury 'living in a fantasy world' says British UFC star
I agree, and am speaking from the standpoint of being a keen boxing fan and only having a passing interest in MMA; I think boxing is better viewing... but I think the fact that MMA is 'less' limited than boxing to what an all out fight would be makes the MMA enthusiasts feel aloof.
Ultimately you get the guys in the ring and say 'you can't do anything but punch' and the boxer wins (generally speaking).
Then you say... you can still punch but now you can wrestle, kick etc too.... and the boxer loses (generally speaking).
I can see why they think they're better, ie the boxers are only really favourites if you stop the MMAers doing what they're trained to do.
Like I said, I do prefer boxing.

Liam lion you say your a boxing fan & love it,then understate it saying anyone can throw a punch????
The highest grossing mma stars that get the most views are strikers like your Liddells, overeem, wand,Henderson, silva, fedor,bj penn in there hay days ofcourse.
To beat someone like a man is to duke it out not shoot for there ankles & manoeuvre to take there back to get an easy tap out

I think boxing fans, in general, are quite ignorant of other forms of martial arts. Definitely a form of snobbery within the sport. I must say though, you are being a touch ignorant yourself. Any clown can throw a haymaker and get success? Can't agree with that at all unless of course, success in this instance is defined as hitting a drunkard who has never had a fight in his life etcliamlion wrote:In your opinion maybe, but I totally disagree. As for true no holds barred fights? No martial art that I know of replicates picking up a chair and hitting someone over the head with it then jumping all over that same head when they are unconcious. I have never seen anyone throw an elbow in a street fight and have seen more people bite than actually kick out ( unless we are talking kicking someone in the swede when they are on the floor )
It's worth noting that the boxers who have taken part in MMA were finished and completely washed up.
It would be nice to see how a young Mike Tyson or someone like that fared in such an environment. Little different to a 50 yr old Ray Mercer I would bet.
Re: Tyson Fury 'living in a fantasy world' says British UFC star
GSP is the UFC's biggest active draw. He spends most of his fights wrestling.hurlock wrote:Liam lion you say your a boxing fan & love it,then understate it saying anyone can throw a punch????

The nuisances of MMA are simply more intricate and demanding than boxing. I'm really sorry if that offends you.
Can anyone master boxing to the extent of Floyd Mayweather or Roy Jones jnr?? No absolutely not and they were/are phenominal boxers.
Liddell is a kick boxer, not a boxer. As is Overeem. Henderson is a wrestler. Anderson silva is class at BJJ as is BJ Penn. I don't disagree that fans love knockouts but UFC was grown off the back of Royce Gracie (BJJ genius) Dan Severn (wrestler) Matt Hughes (wrestler) Randy Couture (wrestler) etc. It isn't necessarily about strikers.
It is only your opinion that a true 'man' bangs people out. I on the other hand like to see technique overcome raw power, where a small man can beat a much larger man using different fighting systems.

I dont disagree with what youve written and in fact having re-read what i typed, i can clearly see that I havent explained myself properly. Im genuinely not disrespecting boxers, or suggesting that to become a champion in boxing is easy, because I dont believe that. I do however think that a natural ability for punching power is likely to get you further in boxing than in mma.lillywhite14 wrote:I think boxing fans, in general, are quite ignorant of other forms of martial arts. A massive knockout punch, when delivered from a boxer who is hugely behind on points is often or can be referred to as an 'equaliser'. It can negate a masterclass of boxing within a split second. Some of the crudest boxers are the ones with the most power. Its an innate ability of power that they possess and which can yield massive results/success. MMA negates this somewhat with the option to take one-dimensional punchers to the ground, thereby removing their knockout power.
I do not think that the majoirty of boxers are clowns who simply throw haymakers. Although that is exactly what I would describe Freddie Flintoff as.

yea he is finding easier as boxing is much harder he said, when he packed the boxing in he really didnt know what to do and then one day a fella asked him to go to the wolfslair gym as tone was still keeping in shape. anyway he liked what he saw and thought,WHY NOT il give this a go and said it was hard as learning all the moves and holds etc but he was a former kick boxer anyway so could strike with the legs. i take my hat off to tony cos when he started boxing he had no amateur expereince and doors closed on him when he approached managers to turn pro,so after hard work and fights,2 years later he was fighting mark hobson for the british and commonwealth titlehurlock wrote:I bet tony is finding it easier tho!

Just reading my post & I wasn't implying tony wasn't fast or couldn't bang!
Just pro boxing in general! It's a very humiliating sport & I did read Moran had no am expieriance & he done very well! Was cruiser 13/7 when he competed I remember him looking painfully thin.
The fact tony can use knees & kicks must make it easier for him to keep that range!
Did he work on sprawling or does he sub guys out now??
Like Moran he was game & came to ruck & allway's was fighting fit

Anyone could have a go at mma in the cage/ring etc if they were to face the sort of standard that Flintoff faced in his "fight" so he is a terrible example.

I train and love both sports, fury would be crazy to think he would last less than a minute under mma rules with ether JDS or Cain
Hes obviously made these comments to boost his profile in the USA ,and it dont look like its done a bad job becuase his name is on every mma or combat based forum on the internet
,which surely wont be a bad think if hes got to fight over there in a miunte or two

Vitor Belfort had one pro fight & silva has.
To make the transition you have to be young & fresh or just fresh.

Marcus Davis transitioned from boxing (pro debut 1993) to mma (debut 2003)hurlock wrote:I think you will find Marcus the Irish hand grenade who beat are own dan what's his face with the Mohawk is the most successful.

I hardly consider guys who had 1 or 2 fights in boxing as really having transitioned compared to a guy with 49 fights. Fulton is a full time cross over as opposed to a one time only guy.
I think one of the Diaz brothers did a one off as well.

Missed former NABO WBO Cruiserweight champion Yosuke Nishijima that fought Baroni, Hunt, Yoshida and Cyborg in PRIDE FC.nfc90210 wrote:I posted this on another forum some time back, but I don't think that I ever posted it here.

To the best of my knowledge, there have been six (or five depending on how you look at it) boxers who have held credible world titles (for the purposes of this thread defined as WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF) that have competed in MMA. Pro wrestling double crosses don't count. Nor does whatever the eff you want to call Ali/Inoki.

Ray's MMA fights...

Ray Mercer Vs Tim Sylvia (Adrenaline MMA 3: Bragging Rights) (June 13, 2009) (BJCC Arena) (Birmingham, Alabama)

- James Toney (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... at=boxer): Jobbed to Couture.

Imamu Mayfield Vs Kazuyuki Fujita (Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2003 - Inoki Festival) (December 31, 2003 (Kobe Wing Stadium) (Kobe, Japan).... To make things more fair for the boxer, the rules were set up so Fujita would get only 20 seconds on the ground before he was stood up...

Why dont you explain how BJJ works when your against more than one opponent ?liamlion wrote:In your opinion maybe, but I totally disagree. Boxing is harder to do as its a fine art & if you can't punch & don't have speed your pretty knackerd.
Mma can look more brutal but boxing is far more damaging as you rarely see mma fighters slur etc.
If truth be told I respect boxers more because stand up is the ultimate challenge.
Muay Thai/Wrestling/Judo/BJJ are much more sophisticated fighting systems and are much more difficult to master.
BTW i have been training bjj three years, been boxing all my life .
