Both amazing amateurs/abysmal pros. Leon won heavyweight title from the greatest. This was awesome and quite lucky I think. Leon settled into a 19-17-2 record in palookaville afterwards.
Nick was not groomed for a title shot like the gold medal winner Spnks was so he never got near a title shot. Wells pro career ended up a mediocre 13-8 record.
Amateur records:
Nick Wells ---189-18 with 110 knockouts, (72 of them in the first round.)... WOW!
Leon Spinks -178-7 with 133 knockouts................ and again WOW!
If these guys got to fight each other as pros in their relative peaks and before they were used as rag dolls by other boxers, who would have won a series?
Leon Spinks VS Nick Wells as pros

So many replies on this thread, straining the bandwidth, boxrec probably crashed a few times
Re: Leon Spinks VS Nick Wells as pros
Nick Wells usually gets some respect, Leon...not so much....the Wells fans may have been miffed even being mentioned with Leon.
Though I would favor Leon in the suggested context.

Re: Leon Spinks VS Nick Wells as pros
I picked the two of them because they both had the most (numarically) amazing amateur records while having the most average journeyman record. Notwithstanding the world championship thing Leon had going for him for a while. Judging from their am records, you'd expect a Marciano-ish type of pro career.

for comparison
Wlad Klitschko: 134 wins , 6 losses, 65 KO's
Vatili: 195 Wins, 15 lossess, 80 KO's
Re: Leon Spinks VS Nick Wells as pros
Question is though, did Wells hang in the amateurs too long? It happens sometimes. Burnout is a factor. I've never seen him fight so I can't say. Thoughts?
Re: Leon Spinks VS Nick Wells as pros
Turned pro at 25. Half his losses were to sub .500 guys. Couldn't even build a good record with bonafide stepping-stone opponents. It's a shame, I would see some of his amateur performances on Saturday TV and was psyched to keep track of him when he turned pro. As it turned out, his pro career came and went before I was even aware of it. He moved on to other professions before teh internet was here.Expug wrote:Question is though, did Wells hang in the amateurs too long? It happens sometimes. Burnout is a factor.
