Old location for Repton Club?
Old location for Repton Club?
I know this should really be on the Amateur Forum but reckon I have better chance of reply on the British one, so here goes....
My wife's family had connections with Repton Boxing Club in Bethnal Green in the late 1940s and through the 50s. I believe the current club location in Cheshire Street is not the original one, so would be grateful if someone could tell me where the club gym was in those days, and when they moved to the present location.
Thanks, J

Re: Old location for Repton Club?
Thanks, will try that. I think i read In an article about Tony Burns that they had to leave one premises, but then got a good lease on the current one. Thanls for the note anyway. Might pop a mail to the club itself and ask.

they lived in 178 vallance road mate a stones throw from the repton, cos tony burns was a dear pal of them.
Re: Old location for Repton Club?
After a huge amount of 'googling' ...I think the original location was 16 Victoria Park Square (named University House, seems to be flats now?). Looks like the boxing club left there in 1971. Not sure if they moved straight to Cheshire Street then, or went somewhere on a temporary basis before ending up there.
I found a few articles on Bethnal Green that give snippets of information on the club and its history, so i tried to piece them together to come to the above conclusion.....hope i'm right!

Re: Old location for Repton Club?
It must have been at a different location, because the club was formed in the 1880s and the current venue is an old bathhouse. Chances are it stopped being a bathhouse in the 50s or 60s.
Re: Old location for Repton Club?
Thanks....looked at that site to start with but unless i missed it in the write up i didn't see any mention of where the club's original premises were, as i think they moved to the the current base during the 1970s.Tarquin Tarpaulin IV wrote:http://www.reptonboxingclub.com/about-us

I was trying to find out where they were based in the 1950s, and as i posted earlier, based on bits and pieces from web sites on Bethnal Gren history it looks as if it was at 16 Victoria Park Square until 1971. Any additional information...or a correction if i am wrong,..woud be good, as i am cobbling my information together from snippets off web pages.

Looked up this address on the 1891 census and it's listed as 'University Club' which would fit.john2345 wrote:Tarquin Tarpaulin IV wrote:http://www.reptonboxingclub.com/about-us

Re: Old location for Repton Club?
The Repton was in Victoria Park Square in the 50s &60s, my brother boxed for them during that period, it was also a youth club. It was only a short walk from the gym to York Hall baths, still a boxing venue today.
