For me....
I thought Oscar De La Hoya would beat Manny Pacquiao...
Audley Harrison would be the heir to Lennox Lewis' throne.
Juanma Lopez would beat Orlando Salido.
Bomber to beat Nathan Cleverly.
Mikkel Kessler would beat Andre Ward as well.

Arthur Abraham to beat Froch comfortably and eventually stop him.
Re: What fights/careers have you been so wrong about in boxing?
Froch to get brutally knocked out against abraham
Froch to get totally outclassed against bute
I've never been happier to lose money haha

When Audleys wheels came off against Williams.. Showed me never to bet on heavyweights ever again... I knew Burns would get beat by Johanaon and Arthur and predicted after the Arthur fight he would go on too big things.. Got Arthur v cook/Gomez wrong.. Fancied Hatton v Mayweather and honestly think if the fight was in the uk he would have stood a better chance then maybe went on to beat Pac man but he was shot after the Mayweather fight..
When fights are matched properly boxing is the best sport in the world fights change in a instant.. Small percentages from winning and losing..

Great calls, particularly Vargas - I remember the commentator referring to him as a New Mexican great in the making... And then he ran into a prime Kevin Kelley...Old bones Ian wrote:After watching Gregorio Vargas beat Hodkinson , i thought there's a guy that will hold the title for a few years, he then never won another world title fight.
Same as Colin McMillan, i thought he'd be a p4p in the british ratings when i saw him box on the way up, it all seemed so natural for him, yes he won a world title , but i thought he'd be a long reign.

colin would have had a long reign as world champ if not for the shoulder injury. brilliant skills, amazing when caught on the ropes, lightening quick hands, good chin...ok not a big punch on him but the volume of shots was enough to see most men off. with a heavier punch he might almost have been as good as ray leonard.

I'm not quite so convinced - think his lack of a dig could have still been his undoing at the very top.misterpunch wrote:colin would have had a long reign as world champ if not for the shoulder injury. brilliant skills, amazing when caught on the ropes, lightening quick hands, good chin...ok not a big punch on him but the volume of shots was enough to see most men off. with a heavier punch he might almost have been as good as ray leonard.

I thought De La Hoya would either carry Manny through the fight or hurt him badly....
I was convinced that Kelly Pavlik was something special and that he would have retired Hopkins when they fought.
I never gave Ricky Burns a hope of winning a world title, yet I thought Paul Appleby had a decent shout of fighting at world level.
I really did think Haye was going to go and put Wlad on his arse.

Bruno to beat Witherspoon, though I think that's the only Bruno fight I ever got wrong.
Whole careers.....well I couldn't see anyone preventing Herol from ruling the world.
Watson to massively outperform Benn through the length of his career.
Chris Pyatt never to get beyond European level.

Thinking recently I also thought Khan would do Garcia.

I'm not surprised that some of you guys picked Hatton over Mayweather and Manny. A few years before, lots of Brits made the same sort of mistake picking Naz over Barrera. You should learn a lesson from that i.e. British fighters get hyped like no other, no nation has the blind faith and lack of objectivity that Brits (particularly the English) have. Whenever you pick a Brit to win a big fight, or England to win a football match, or similar...stop...take off your patriotic hat and reassess. The idea that Ricky was anywhere near Floyd's level is almost comical, but tens of thousands believed.

It has to be noted, I think, that although the Kelley fight took a lot out of him John-John Molina made him look stupid shortly afterwards & I don't think he ever got over that. The Kelley fight was nip & tuck but Molina ruined his confidence I think.

To be fair mate I find that a bit patronising. Many on this forum are able to take off that particular 'hat' and many had valid reasons for believing Naz could beat Barrera, particularly given the fact Barrera was moving up in weight and had already been badly troubled by Junior Jones' power.JLP wrote: A few years before, lots of Brits made the same sort of mistake picking Naz over Barrera. For sure some were unduly influenced by their patriotism, but many made the call based on sound reasoning.

The reasoning wasn't sound re: Naz, but I do take your point and I wasn't for a moment suggesting everybody is guilty of the British disease. A lot are, though.Deserter wrote:To be fair mate I find that a bit patronising. Can't remember many. Either i have blocked them out or i'm a genius. Pacquiao v Cotto hasn't been mentioned. I thought it was just a matter of time before Cotto broke Manny in half with a left hook. Also after seeing Mosley struggle mightily with Mayorga i couldn't see anything except prolonged ugly beating from Margarito.

i think naz always had a fair chance against MAB - i never thought he'd win and was quite happy at the result.
but football wise you do have a point, JLP. read carefully folks...england - will - never - win - any - major - football -trophy - ever - again.

Re: What fights/careers have you been so wrong about in boxing?
Well hindsight is a wonderful thing. I'd argue strongly that just because the outcome was different, doesn't mean the reasoning beforehand wasn't sound. Telling proof of that was the fact that so many people felt the same way, whether it was journalists, 'insiders' or forum fans.JLP wrote:The reasoning wasn't sound re: Naz.
And proof that the view certainly wasn't Brit-centric is this Las Vegas Review Journal preview:
"The undefeated Hamed is the clear choice for a winner here. Hamed's exceptional power for a featherweight is the main difference between the two fighters.
If Junior Jones can stop Barrera, as he did in the fifth round of their 1996 WBO super featherweight title fight, then Hamed, a much harder hitter than Jones, certainly can stop Barrera as well.
Jones victory over Barrera in Tampa, Fla., technically was by disqualification. But the referee was just about to stop the bout, and rightfully so, when a Barrera corner man jumped in the ring to throw in the towel, resulting in the official disqualification."

It's not a wholly Brit-centric phenomenon, I didn't say that. Brits are, though, at least from what I've seen the most guilty.Deserter wrote:Well hindsight is a wonderful thing. Re: What fights/careers have you been so wrong about in boxing?
You tar in Brits there.. I think yes there is a loyalty to fighters.. But if you watch the Hatton v Mayweather fight again Hatton was getting at him and causing problems.. Was getting stopped doing what he does best and pushed away to keep him off Mayweather.. That fight ended Hattons career.. Could Hatton of been the best possibly we will never know.. Most big fights happen in America giving the home fighter the advantage.. Only uk fighter to be truly the best in the World in my generation was Joe Calzaghe.. He was the best... Only other person close was Lennox Lewis and he wasnt as good as a lot of people think

Re: What fights/careers have you been so wrong about in boxing?
we do have a high level of guys who travel the world supporting their various sports heroes..football we know of, boxing fans regularly travel across the pond, the barmy army are always flying over to aussie to support the cricket team. i go to lords and the oval and the away teams are not greatly supported except by their fans who live here!
i dont go to football so i cant comment on that sport but the last time i was at york hall (not long ago) and an american was fighting there was not one yank in the house apart from him...very poor support from our friends in the US of A![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

My main man Tom dallas gutted that his career has gone the way it has but in all fairness he hasn't helped himself to stuck in his old ways
Re: What fights/careers have you been so wrong about in boxing?
Thought Ricardo Lopez was going to be the best thing.
Paul smith I thought was going all the way.
Tony Jeffries I thought he was cut out for the pro's
