Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
shame cause i think this could ahve been a good fight for the commonwealth, one of the best proberly seen in a while
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
McGuiness' team are biting their noses off to spite their face here. It would be a decent purse and a decent match. The lad would still have over 8 weeks to prepare even if he's not in the gym already.
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
I can see where his team are coming from though, it's the principal of the whole thing. He deserved to be treated with better respect than that. Very amateur stuff from the CBC and obviously FW is too used to getting his way. Shame, as this would have been a belter of a fight. Lets hope it's not a sign of things to come for this card or else we could be seeing a Burns - Walsh world title fight.JLP wrote:McGuiness' team are biting their noses off to spite their face here. Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
Okay they hadn't had a signed contract and if it was any closer than 8 weeks to fight time then fair enough but having the date pencilled in more than three months out and inked in 8 weeks out would be good enough for me if the money was right, which I think it was. Arbitrary deadline or not.
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
Yes, my first reaction when hearing that the Canadians hadn't received a contract by the initial deadline, or their claims that they had heard nothing for almost a month after this date, then finding out the fight had been announced by looking at BoxRec was...'What's their problem?'JLP wrote:McGuiness' team are biting their noses off to spite their face here. Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
Did they not think of picking up the phone? It's not hard. They'd been given a pencilled in date, I'm sure they could've kept in touch with Walsh's management team if they had any doubts about the fight materialising; if they actually wanted the fight that is. If they didn't do that, and they did want the fight, they've let their man down, in my view.dondada wrote:Yes, my first reaction when hearing that the Canadians hadn't received a contract by the initial deadline, or their claims that they had heard nothing for almost a month after this date, then finding out the fight had been announced by looking at BoxRec was...'What's their problem?'JLP wrote:McGuiness' team are biting their noses off to spite their face here. So they pick up the phone and are told x, y and z. Big deal if you haven't got a signed contract at the time, one might observe.JLP wrote:Did they not think of picking up the phone? It's not hard. I can't believe this has been turned round to somehow be their fault. Takes all sorts, I suppose.
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
They received an inked contract for a fight on March 16 (61 days from yesterday). If they really wanted the fight, that's plenty of time.
Edit: Did they ever want the fight? Or did they stay quiet until after the arbitrary deadline had passed hoping that Block would award the fight to the second highest bidder (who came in with a much lower bid), in the hope Walsh would vacate and their man could fight for the vacant strap on home soil?

Is 8 weeks enough time to prepare?RonnieTheSharkClark wrote:Send me up a contract I like the Walsh Brothers ;) Liam is next on my fight list?!?!?! Someone send me a fight plan :p
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
Well Ronnie has jumped in there with an offer ha.. I was just about to come on here and say what about John Simpson he doesn't have a fight lined up there is 2 Scottish lads in the mix. I believe both would beat Liam Walsh. But. Makes for excellent fights.. My bias would want the fight for Ronnie but Simmo does deserve it more.. Also got Gary Buckland there can fight for both titles... Plenty of fights available for Liam

Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
Well when they refuse me then the next three opponents pull out and they will probz offer me the fight a few days before ;) 8 weeks is too much notice for me I will start training in 2 weeks if they give me that fight :p
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
I've no idea. And, even if they did, why shouldn't they 'if' those are the rules? Do they have some kind of duty to chase a contract from someone who has just beaten them in a bid?JLP wrote:They received an inked contract for a fight on March 16 (61 days from yesterday). John Simpsons the man to take the fight
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
Thanks for your appraisal of the subject, plus your advice on who to call. Duly noted!Vaudeville Villain wrote:This one’s much ado about nothing. An arbitrary date and the usual Christmas shutdown and a bit of a paddy fit. The most interesting part was seeing Adam Harris get a mention. Is this the guy who used to shill Hennessy's wares on Facebook and would send abusive DMs if he felt people weren’t towing the party line? Someone should have given him a call so the wider world can read his Victorian, female-esque hysterics.
They got a contract for a fight that doesn’t take place until March. Sign it or move on, unless of course the contract is now so water logged with salt tears it tears apart at the slightest touch.
It seems they've taken your advice and moved on, because they didn't receive what they should have done by the deadline - which was before the Christmas break (it seems they thought the deadline meant something...apparently it didn't).
I'd say they're justified in moving on but, given the circumstances, I think it's unfair to lose their mandatory slot over it. Probably another case of much ado about nothing. Unless you're the boxer, of course.
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
It didn't say arbitrary, by the way. This is the word Mr Block subtly introduced when I asked him about it. It was a clear deadline when sent out.Vaudeville Villain wrote:My post wasn’t a slur on the article or BoxRec News, by any means, just pointing out that if someone within boxing — councils, promoters, whoever — tells you a deadline then do you really expect it to be met? And if it says ‘arbitrary’ then all bets are off. At least a fortnight can be knocked from the 20+ days to account for Christmas.
You're obviously more pragmatic than I am. If someone doesn't meet a deadline, shouldn't there be some consequences? But never mind that. I appreciate the need for flexibility at times, though one might hope it would be accompanied by communication.
In this case, not only were there no consequences but the people who set the deadline are now preparing to kick to the back of the queue a bloke who made different plans because he heard nowt even a few weeks after that same deadline. That just doesn't seem fair, to me.
I really must learn to shrug and say 'That's boxing'. Nah, f**k that.
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
Ian, what would you do if you were McGuiness? A decent purse, a chance of picking up a reasonably prestigious belt, eight weeks to train. Would you take it?
Re: Liam Walsh needs a new opponent, it seems
They've got something else lined up now. Maybe (at the time) they read about Ricky Burns not getting his match and decided that no news was bad news...so made other arrangements.JLP wrote:Ian, what would you do if you were McGuiness? If they could bin what they've arranged now, maybe they would, I dunno...I don't think he'd clear that much from his share of that purse either. Maybe he has an easier, more lucrative job at home - you hinted at this and I wouldn't disagree with you.
I think it's wrong of the CBC to knock the lad back down the list though.

What about Perspective E, that of the scorned journalist bent on a quest of revenge which includes maligning practically anything FWP ever do.

Blimey, been on the forum a couple of months and think you can come mud-slinging, eh?JLP wrote:What about Perspective E, that of the scorned journalist bent on a quest of revenge which includes maligning practically anything FWP ever do.D
Good summary though.
Given VV's earlier criteria, I would normally be a C but in this case I'm an A, though replacing the word 'tardiness' with 'unfairness'.
