EDDIE HEARN GET THIS ON....

Post by Bricks »

Recently Steve Collins has been calling out Roy Jones jnr and people are saying it might get made with backing from middle eastern money.

Like others my initial reaction was its a ludicrous fight at this stage

But than i thought about it..... chris eubanks snr is dying for a fight too. He wanted Nigel benn recently and benn just fought an exhibition in leicester recently.
and reggie johnson wants to fight again and robin reid another 40 something is still active.....

How about a 6 round prizefighter like round robin tournament taking place on two events spread 3 months apart featuring the following seniors fights

Night One
benn v eubanks
Collins v Jones Jnr
Herol Graham v TBC

Night two
Jones Jnr v Benn
Collins v Robin Reid
Eubanks snr v Herol Graham

Perhaps it could fill 15,000 tickets somewhere in Dubai with Jones's payday being the problem middle eastern backers could take care of?

This is a tongue in cheek offering but surely a seniors prizefighter perhaps taking place in Dubai next to some casino might pull them in and bring an injection of publicity for prizefighter worldwide....and maybe joe calzaghe might do an exhibition!

Well for starters if you knew anything about Dubai you'd know there are no casinos as it's an Islamic emirate!

Surely the likes of Eubank and Benn who have seen sickening disaster in a boxing ring would understand how much of a horror show such an event would be.

All discussion on Jones Jr/Collins/Benn/Eubank should be put in the "Boxers of the Past" Forum.

This isn't the 1990s, they should not go back and fight for the money - it brings the sport into disrepute and any Governing Body/Promoter should be subject to death by firing squad if they even consider it.

I saw some clips on YouTube a week or two ago. Try "Benn last ever fight" or similar. I think it was in Leicester, in a Liquid/Envy type club. I think he floored the lad in the last round, but seemed to ease off to let him go the distance.

There's a line in an early Only Fools and Horses, when after Del warns him not to bring shame on the family name, Rodney replies along the lines of "I'd have to get done for chicken molesting to bring a slur on this family's name".

This always pops into my head when people talk about boxing's name being brought into disrepute.

Not that I disagree with you..

I don't mean to sound negative here but what is the point? Do you want to see someone seriously hurt?

It would be as anti-climatic as masters football. What's the appeal of watching flabby guys who are shadows of their former selves creaking round a ring or a pitch? I'm not saying they shouldn't do it, I'm saying why would anybody want to watch it? What was the shittest bit of the Olympic opening ceremony? Paul McCartney trying, and failing, to keep the rhythm of one of his old hits.

I love all these guys grew up watching them but nothing worse than a great fighter a shell of his former self let them grow old healthy I'm not here for a dispute it's like many a fighter that still boxing or box too long people should advise them to retire not give them false hopes!! U ever see Jerry Quarry in his later years? Sad site such a great fighter struggling to even tie his own shoe laces 1 hard fight and hard spar too many, I hope this don't happen as much as I love boxing especially these fighters!!

I would suggest that those who think this I'd a good idea watch Ali's last two fights, Leonard Duran 3, and the final Nelson Fenech fight, and see what you think then.

oooohhh bitchy! and foolish too. if you knew anything about dubai you would know its about as islamic a republic as london! Plenty of high rolling gambling going on there my friend

As for the idiot who suggested this belongs in boxers of the past, its a current event we are talking about, ie a future collins v jones jnr fight as per the link posted, its not a retrospective fight :shame: dumbass

Deserter has lived in Dubai for probably a decade or so on and off, no? He didn't say there was no gambling going on anywhere at all in Dubai, he said there were no legal casinos. He's correct.

Thanks mate :TU: Have lived here since 99 Mugabi, bar three years back in the UK between 06 and 09 so I think there's only one of us that's looking foolish right now :TU:
I'm amazed at the amount of people who just assume anything will work here and make good money - people forget this city is about the size of Manchester and that even the biggest sporting events here don't come close to the attendance figures you'd get in UK. Factor in the time difference messing up revenue streams like PPV etc and the only time there's a business case for staging anything like this is if a sheikh has money to burn - and believe me that's far rarer than people think... most of the time they're far happier spending their cash in London, Saint Tropez etc than on home turf.

In the time I've been here I've seen plenty of people arriving off the plane thinking the place is a licence to print money and then getting a stiff reality check. I met many of them because of my roles in media at the time. There's money here, just as there is in London, but tapping into it is nowhere as simple as you think. Factor in the fact that unlike horse-racing there's no interest or heritage in combat sports and it's harder still.
Feel free to correct me based on what you've read in The Sun or Daily Mail though :TU:
