That would be a cracking film, Warren Beatty could star, but it doesn’t sound like the man I’ve sat next to at fights and had to embrace just to keep myself warm in various small halls and by the hour hotels (we were there for dinner shows, get a grip). I actually had to look back at my own perspectives as outlined in my last post to understand the subsequent posts.

My main hope, the only hope in fact, is that Walsh gets to fight Burns instead. What’s Burns doing effing about with this unification lark when he’s got a ‘bitter domestic rivalry’ on the go? Burns has done for Mitchell, so if he did for Walsh then took on Rees, who is pissing about a bit himself by taking on Broner, we’d have Benn-Eubank-Watson-Collins redux on the cards. Years down the line, we could all sit and weep about ‘good old-fashioned’ British rivals who were at the top of the world. We’d talk about them for, erm, ever and throw the carcases of rotting, rabid swans at anyone who said such filthy words as: ‘American fighters who were perceived as better boxers’, ‘title unifications’ and whatnot, which isn’t part of this filthy word line up.

Burns Vs Walsh. Let’s get it done.

The Auld rivalry! War Walsh and Burnsie :yay: :box:

Across all weights - of the 15 Commonwealth champions, 12 of them are British !

I love the sudden introduction of the word "arbitrary".

A boxer is given a contract with a deadline. When that deadline is missed, it suddenly then becomes an arbitrary deadline.

I wonder if it was the other way around and FW was waiting on a contract deadline that was missed - would that have been arbitrary also ? - I don't think so.

Most boxing fans know that the BBBofC the CBC and WBO are heavily influenced by certain parties.

I think this all depends on how much a risk Team Walsh are willing to take.. Will they look for an easier option in my opinion yes but only time will tell

I meant Ronnie and John both very very hard fights for Walsh.. I personally don't think Ronnie would get the fight even if John doesn't.. Styles make fights and I think Ronnie v Liam would make a better fight but I also think that John deserves the title shot more so if either fighter gets it I would be happy :)

With the fullest of respect and on the show its going on FWP would get a hard time putting a 7 fight novice in with a undefeated champion when a proven ex British and commonwealth champion is available,do you see were im coming from

I think most people would agree that Ronnie is credible and FWP would not get a hard time.. I do agree that at 8 fights Ronnie is a relative novice in the pro boxing game but not in the fight game.. I 100% agree John deserves it more I'm honest enough to say that.. But surely if the chance came Ronnie should grab it with both hands.. I hope John wins and we can maybe see John v Ronnie at the end of the year

I think that Ronnie v Liam for the Commonwealth is less of a gap in class than Liam v Burns for a World title, yet the latter was in play late last year.

Totally agree, I think Liam v Ronnie although a little early for Ronnie is more credible than Walsh v Burns for a lightweight world title. Walsh is nowhere near Rickys level and would have been stopped early like Mitchell.

Blimey, been on the forum a couple of months and think you can come mud-slinging, eh?

Good summary though.

Given VV's earlier criteria, I would normally be a C but in this case I'm an A, though replacing the word 'tardiness' with 'unfairness'.
I think it's a fair point though. I've read your stuff for years in BM and, the vast majority of the time I find it informative and enjoyable, dito with the stuff you do on here. However you do come across as a wee bit bias against FWP so I tend to take most things you say on the subject with a pinch of salt. You may be justified on this, I maybe shouldn't use as strong a term as bias, maybe unforgiving would be better.

I don't disagree with your general point here, though I do agree with JLP, it seems like the Canadian's are looking for a way out. 8 weeks notice is plenty for a Commonwealth fight, plus as the mandatory he's making good money - more than his promoters were willing to lay on the line in the purse bids for him anyway. Commonwealth bias to British boxers is an interesting argument though, on face value there would look like a case over recent years

All fair comments, fella :TU:

Discard the identity of the promoter, I'm not too bothered on this occasion - the CBC's stance seems bollocks, no? I just think it's particularly unfair (even if you don't believe the Canadians' motives behind doing so, which I understand, for sure) that when they've arranged something else because they heard nowt weeks after a deadline, that their lad loses his place in the queue. He was justified in making other plans, I'd say...especially when Burns' December date fell through and Walsh had been in a car crash, FFS.

I do get annoyed that no one else gives a sh*t about stuff that I think is important...people just have such low expectations when it comes to the governance of boxing - and that's completely understandable.

Yes, there's a hugely disproportionate amount of British Commonwealth champions. Even one who isn't a Brit is Ovill. Part of the reason, though, could be that the other countries' associations are far less active (being ultra-generous).

I've been saying for ages (to my dog mostly, as it's not as if many non-boxing anoraks give a monkey's) that the Commonwealth title seems to have lost any real point.

Most champs are Brits, and a lot of the fights are Brit vs Brit. Some of these fights would never be made for a vacant Lonsdale belt: Limond vs Doyle for example.

I know that many Commonwealth countries aren't exactly boxing hotbeds. However, in the lighter weights South Africa seems to produce more "world" title holders/challengers than we do, yet how many of these fighters contest the Commonwealth title on their way up?
