Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
it was closer than your card but the right decision at the end
Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
Peter Boddington(Roots ABA) was the Amateur Boxing Association heavyweight champion of 1967.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Boddington
here is a listing of ABA Heavyweight Champions since 1881.
http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABA_He ... _Champions
There is no mention as to whom the opponets were that Peter Boddingtonhad won the ABA title from.
Boddington had also turned pro in 1967(at age 24 almost 25).
Just seems kind of odd why they chose not to develope Joe Bugner
by giving him more amateur experience.
Being an Olympian would have been a great platform
to start off a professional boxing career.
Bugner said that hearing about Lazlo Papp had inspired him.
Perhaps Bugner would have liked to have represented Hungary in the 1968 Olympics
if he was to be an Olympian?

Did the European tour happen?Il Duce wrote:Giancarlo,,,,
May 1971
Yank Durham was commenting about Joe Frazier's future during the Eugene 'Cyclone Hart vs. Stanley 'Kitten' Hayward
pre-fight interview, on Philadelphia Television.
He mentioned that Joe was going on a tour of Europe with his Musical Revue, and would perform boxing exhibitions
as well as a possible Title Defense.
The conversation mentioned that of the European and British Heavyweight Champion, Joe Bugner. Where Yank stated
he talked to Joe Bugner's Manager (Andy Smith), and that they wanted no part of Joe Frazier at this time.
Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
Yes I did,but you only mentioned Billy Wells as one of the two who defeated Joe Bugner in the amateurs.
Perhaps Joe Bugner didnt even make it into the finals of the 1967 ABA tournament.
It could have been Peter Boddington vs Billy Wells for the 1967 ABA heavyweight championship for all I know.
Anyway I havent posted in 2 days,so I was trying to find any additional info on line concerning the subject since my previous post.
BTW Joe Frazier in his autobiography refers to Joe Bugner as a "Former Circus Strongman"
would you know anything about that?

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
I know it was so long ago but, unless we hear it from Andy Smith it just hearsay.
The idea of going professional without a lot of amateur(but not too much)experience seems a little goofy to me.
Although it didnt stop Tex Cobb of course.
Makes only sense(IMOP) if you lookin at some short term money for yourself and your fighter.
I was thinkin maybe there were some alterior motives
since Bugner doesnt even mention whom it was he fought in the amateurs
in the various interviews that are available on-line(im sure he did a number in the boxing magazines
of days past however)
Regarding Joe Bugner jr.,did he also trying his hand at boxing
back in the early 1990's?

Here is Joe Bugner Jr's ring record.
Much is mentioned of Bedford in the interviews with Joe Bugner ,
but I seem to remember that Joe Bugner also use to live in St. Ives England too back in the 1960's

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
I was going to say from the sound of it as if Bugner may have been smokin some doobie before some of his fights?
That would certainly explain his lack of agression .
and Bill Drovers coment about Bugner appearing to be Hungery all the time.
(Hungery for cookies particularly?)
Just a theory that came to me.
But a 19 year old smokin reefer in 1969?
Noooooooooooooooooooo.

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
One of Bugner's early losses was in November 1971 to Larry Middleton who had broken Bugner's jaw early
in the fight(around round three I think)
But Bugner went the distance but lost on points.
Im not sure which of the remaining 7 rounds Bugner may have actually one.
But I did read in a newspaper account that Middleton had floored Bugner
for a seven count early in the 10th round.
Was this fight shown live on British television?

Here is a link to the cover of the official onsite programme of the London A.B.A Championships
Empire Pool,Wembley Friday April.14.1967.
http://www.champsuk.com/i-1226/london-a ... amme-.html
Most likely it possibly lists all of Joe Bugner's amateur fights up until then.
Maybe someone can e-mail the seller and ask him to provide the info?

Looks like Bodell may have woken up on the wrong side of the bed that day and Bugner still half in his.

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
What info you have on the Bugner vs Middleton bout?
Bugner's jaw must have been broken either late in the third round or the beginning of the fourth round
from the sound of it.
I wonder if Middlelton actually"floored"Bugner in the 10th round or if he hit his jaw
and Bugner just went to a knee from the pain.

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
joe was in a lot of pain with that broken jaw against middleton...it seemed like he had for the first time realised what the hurt game actually involved
Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
His lack of agression in the ring to a certain degree.
I wonder if Joe Bugner use to listen to this song or songs like this while he was getting his hands wrapped back in around
1969-1973

did Shavers use this same tatic against Bugner as he had done against Jimmy Ellis?Brutu wrote:Here was another tough fight for Bugner against Earnie Shavers from May 1982.
However notice at about 2:46 of this clip.
In the knock down.
Does it appear that Shavers had used (his) illegal tatic of holding the back of Bugner's neck and head in place
with his open left glove while he then delivers an uppercut?

You be the judge.BTW in the interview with Bugner,Bugner claims Shavers had head butted him after the knockdown to cause
the cut,but Shavers makes no mention of it in his autobiography.

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
I wonder if the quality of sparring partners that Bugner may have had later may have affected his boxing after 1972?
If it just became stale or even regressed.
In 1970 and 1971,Bugner went to America and sparred with Muhammad Ali,Jimmy Ellis,
Sonny Liston,Joe Frazier and Thad Spencer.
Presumably it was for Quarry's fight with Jack Bodel in 1971l that Bugner had sparred with Jerry Quarry.
Whom were Bugner's sparring partners for his fight with Joe Frazier
and the return match with Muhammad Ali in 1975?

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
i did some searching around in the free google newspaper archives.
Joe Bugner's (apparently)main sparring partner's
that came to Malaysia in June 1975 when he was preparing to fight Muhammad Ali,
were,
"Irish"Pat Duncan(of USA)
and
Bjorn Rudi(of Norway)
