I voted for Page. Holmes v an out of shape Witherspoon is depressing to contemplate.

Re: Larry Holmes versus the WBA champs ?
Larry already beat the best one on his best night (Witherspoon).
Page is one of those where it could be a competitive intriguing fight if Page showed up to fight, but I think in reality he would've fought a defensive stinker.
Most entertaing fight of the bunch would've probably been Coatzee.

If Page was motivated, and fought a more aggressive fight, and the biggest thing, in shape, he whups Larry.
Re: Larry Holmes versus the WBA champs ?
Seriously? I've never seen any version of Page that would have beaten Holmes. Which fight would you say best shows the in shape, motivated, aggressive Page?Nile4000 wrote:If Page was motivated, and fought a more aggressive fight, and the biggest thing, in shape, he whups Larry.

I watched George Chaplin dominate Page twice, Holmes would do the same and the judges wouldn't rob him.
Re: Larry Holmes versus the WBA champs ?
larry would of beat them all it was only the speed of spinks that could beat him and none of them were as fast as spinks
Re: Larry Holmes versus the WBA champs ?
Out of that list, I only see Page and Witherspoon giving Larry problems.
I don't give Coetzee or Dokes much chance of beating him.

Page edged the first one, the second fight was more of a draw.

Page didn't win enough rounds in the two fights combined to earn a decision in one of them. Two massive robberies.Nile4000 wrote:SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I watched George Chaplin dominate Page twice, Holmes would do the same and the judges wouldn't rob him.

Re: Larry Holmes versus the WBA champs ?
I had Chaplin winning both times as well. Page had a solid chin, good power, but he could get damn lazy in the ring at times.

Re: Larry Holmes versus the WBA champs ?
The only reason there was a rematch was because everybody knew that Page lost the first one, then they screwed Chaplin even worse.
Re: Larry Holmes versus the WBA champs ?
I think the fact that people are talking about Page getting gifts against George Chaplin, a solid journeyman at best, tells you all about his chances against Holmes. One sided UD with Page in survival mode IMO.

As far as I'm concerned, Chaplin didn't do enough to win the second fight, but neither did Page.Greg had a chance to win this impressively, but coming in 238 didn't help. And Chaplin still couldn't get him out of there. What he did was make Greg look bad, more so than beating him.I don't think Larry had enough firepower to hurt Greg, who along with Tim Witherspoon had the best chin of the elite heavies at that time.

I've never heard anyone share your opinion. Chaplin wasn't a puncher, what he did was completely out-work Page round after round until he was comprehensively robbed- twice.Nile4000 wrote:SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Page didn't win enough rounds in the two fights combined to earn a decision in one of them. I wouldn't be sure on that, Holmes could certainly hit enough to discourage Page. Besides Holmes didn't need to hurt Page, he'd have comfortably outboxed him.

Agreed, and Page isn't going to hurt Holmes with anything. It would be competitive for a bit until Greg started to gas about halfway through, then jabs and right hands over and over. 11-4ish decision assuming Page is at his absolute best.

If it's 1983, and Page is in shape, and motivated, he wins in an upset.

So you say, though your cards for the Chaplin robberies make it difficult for me to take you for more than just a huge Page fan.Nile4000 wrote:SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Agreed, and Page isn't going to hurt Holmes with anything. Yep, even though I'm a Page man, I'm wise enough to know his weaknesses, and the fact that, for a brief moment of time, he had enough to beat Larry Holmes in a fight. But his head wasn't on right.
