Board still refusing to grant Iain Weaver a licence

Post by dondada »

My pal Francis Jones ran up against the very same thing (though the problem was different). Spent a fortune on getting independent views, including from the States, and instructed solicitors...haven't had an update for a while but if he'd have 'won', I'd have heard about it...

Tough one. The Board have overturned decisions before based on second (and even 3rd) opinions but I'm not sure I've ever heard of a cyst on the brain. If they let him box does it set a precedent for things to come? Will boxers who have failed medicals and scans go and seek their licenses again? I think the Board just want the quiet life and are saying no. Perhaps if he was monitored every 6 months and signed a disclaimer? Can't see it myself but sounds like he has a strong case. I'll be watching this with interest.

If he's desperate to box, he should try getting licensed in Europe rather than pissing money up against the wall battling the BBBC. Boxing in Germany has its advantages.

Can't blame them for erring on the side of caution...not much use to Weaver like.

Wayne McCullough had a similar battle with the board in the early 2000s. He went to several specialists and found that the cyst was on the inside of his skull not on his brain. I think it took about two years to sort, but Wayne had the benefit of being based in America so just boxed there until the board backed down.

On something like this if it goes to court the Judge is far more likely to support the Boards NO decision than to risk a YES...

A cyst on the brain is ok, providing it was there before he started boxing...amateur or professional. if he has never had MRI or CT before then the issuing of the license it at the boards table, the boxer would have to prove the cyst has always been there to overturn the boards decision, that wont be easy to prove. remember..the board are supposed to protect the boxers, regardless of the boxers love of the sport. licenses are declined for a reason.

I'm going to be highly pedantic and pick up on that quote from Robert Smith - "if there is any danger at all, no boxer will be granted a licence".

any danger??? This is boxing, always a danger - sadly look at Keiron Farrell.

Rhino is quite right. It's not enough for a fighter to give his consent to fight. The BBBofC has a duty of care to provide adequate safety measures. If they don't provide adequate safety measures they are at risk of coming out on the wrong end of extremely costly court cases e.g. Michael Watson vs BBBofC.

The Board have to go on the side of caution, I can see Weaver going abroad to box. Thing is the Board can only be proved right if Weaver has an inury due to the cyst whilst boxing, I hope for the sake of Weaver the board never get proved correst.

No, you've fucked up. If there's a box ticking exercise and protocol in place that must be adhered to, irrespective of who you are, just get your nut down and do it. There is a paper trail for a reason and the reason isn't to fornicate you about.

Think Franny knows he wont get his licence back that's why he's trying to get over to America to fight. Franny has had the all clear as you say from various independant professionals but as someone else pointed out the British board have a duty of care and I dare say wouldn't want it on their conscience should, God forbid, anything happen to anyone who they grant a licence to after known history of medical problems..... especially the brain like Franny.

Michael, there has to be some sort of consistency with the process. It does not matter who you are. Good luck mate

You just have to follow the same procedure as everybody else, pal. Seldom is there any value in rocking the boat you're attempting to board.

Even if it's a sinking ship!!!!

sorry. couldn't resist it.

You have to make a formal request in writing to the northern area council where you be invited to an interview where probably Reg and Fred will asses your suitability and put you forward to attend one of the Boards trainer/seconds courses. Just a few hoops to jump through Mick, thats all.
