Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
I think Bugner had said in one of those interviews that Winston Allen had called him a drunk and
then proceeded to bite him.
Bugner's 64th pro fight.
October.28.1982.

Dino Denis was another one who brought out the meaness in Bugner
(although it seems to me Bugner may have been POd about something else going on in his life then)

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
He did fight hard against Frazier, probably didn't have a choice. The Frazier fight is the best I have ever seen of Bugner, who I think is actually a bit overrated.foxy01 wrote:At the resumption Joe walked straight across the ring and poleaxed the guy with a right hand sparking him, and you thought to yourself how come he didn't get that angry against the Ali's or Fraziers.
Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
Joe Bugner was scheduled to fight Randy"Tex"Cobb 8.June..1983
at the Alexandra Pavillion in London.
That fight was called off,and he fought Marvis Frazier June 4.1983 in America in New Jersey instead.
(looked to me like Bugner was almost afraid to even try to land a hard punch on Marvis Frazier,
maybe out of respect for his ole dad?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_0UFUFbxIY
However I think I was right about Bugner being in a foul mood
when he fought Dino Denis.
His ex-wife was sueing him and the British tabloids were tearing into him.
It almost made him cancel the fight with Danny Sutton earlier in April.

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
Yes, all people remember are the Holmes and Tyson fights but Marvis was actually quite good. Talent wise Marvis was as good as Bugner if not better.mercman wrote:I think people's memories of Marvis are shaped by the way Tyson destroyed him but Holmes really exposed him too. Basically toyed with him, looked like man v boy.
Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
I think Joe Bugner was suppose to fight Gerry Cooney on HBO December 1981.
But Cooney injured himself.Bugner became Cooney's sparring partner in preparation for the Holmes fight.
Yeah IMOP,Although Shavers did land a terrific right seconds before, but the punch that Shavers dropped Bugner, definately holding the back of his neck and then
delivering an uppercut.I cant believe the ref let him get away with that.
Lennox Lewis dropped Michael grant with the some illegal tatic.

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
Anyone here know which was the earliest televised fight of Joe Bugner's?
The earliest one I can see off hand, was his 28th pro fight
Joe Bugner vrs Brian London(May.5.1970)Empire Pool,Wembley ,London.
That was Brian London's 58th and final bout of his boxing career.
was that a closed circuit broadcast in Britain?

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
here is a link to a newspaper article from January.24.1971.
Interesting because it was published even before Bugner won the titles from Henry Cooper.
It doesn't sound like Bugner was popular much with the British boxing public even before the Cooper bout
due to a lack of "killer instinct" it would appear.
Bugner had been booed before in some of his fights at Albert Hall for not trying much to finish off Carl Gizzi or Scrapeiron Johnson when he had the chance.

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
I think one of the interesting things about Joe Bugner especially in the early part of his career,
was the that he and his manager didn't just restrict themselves
to fighting in the United Kingdom like a lot of the British heavyweight champions and contenders.
I think Henry Cooper only fought outside the UK just a few times
in his whole career and that was to fight in Europe.
Same with Jack Bodell and Billy Walker.
The world of course was changing, especially during the"Swinging Sixties"in England,
(which really didnt end until about 1972-1973)

Here is an interesting early photo of Bugner as a pro.
Certainly not from 1965,
But cant be any older then 1968 from looking at some of the posters in the gym.

During June and July 1970,Joe Bugner and his trainer Andy Smith toured America,
sparred with Ali,attended the Liston-Wepner fight among other things.
Here is a photo of Bugner with former heavyweight champions
Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney
at Toot Shor's famous restaurant that was located then on 52nd street Manhatten NYC.

Did you see Jack Dempsey's scary looking left hand in the photo?
Looks like it could have been forged by Hephaestus.

Brutu wrote:Here was another tough fight for Bugner against Earnie Shavers from May 1982.
However notice at about 2:46 of this clip.
In the knock down.
Does it appear that Shavers had used (his) illegal tatic of holding the back of Bugner's neck and head in place
with his open left glove while he then delivers an uppercut?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHUfbVwn2bE
No. They're mauling on the inside, Shavers lands an uppercut, Bugner's legs turn to cooked spaghetti. The replay shows that his left's resting on the back of Bugner's neck, he's not "holding...[his] head & neck in place" imo. They were mauling. It's not like Shavers grabbed hold of him & twatted him one.
See the finish of Lewis vs Bruno for some proper holding & hitting.
Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
this camera angle better caught Shaver's technique.
you just spin the head and let go the second the punch lands.

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
can anyone here confirm that Joe Bugner came to visit America in 1969?
He gives that year in a couple of interviews.
(even says it was in 1966 in one interview)
But I was wondering if he is remembering correctly.
Particularly since he said he had sparred with Muhammad Ali then ,when he was training
to fight Jerry Quarry.
Ive been trying to figure out the date he did spar with Ali for the first time.

Re: Joe Bugner-What if?& Why Not?
From what I understand for publicity purposes THE DAILY MIRROR had offered Muhammad Ali
10 thousand American dollars to spar 6 rounds with Joe Bugner at Gil Clancey's Gym on Fifth Avenue NYC.
There were a lot of journalist there to cover it.
I think the Daily Mirror may have sponsored Bugner's American tour of America in 1970,
(this particular photo may have been taken at the Fifth Street gym in Miami July 1970 however)

I wonder what additional training or tips Bugner recieved the brief time he was there(if any)?
