Re: Danny Williams Loses AGAIN - Worst One Yet
From what I've seen, the biggest bonus of a private education, is being surrounded by rich, well connected peers, who become your network when you leave school.
I know people who got to private schools on a scholarship who had no money in their background, but when they left school, they were set as their mates were all loaded. I know one guy who now owns a string of nightclubs, including KOKO in camden, who got his investment from one of his school friends who was the son of a cypriot multi millionnaire. The two of them started off buying Tokyo Jo and between them they now have 10 clubs and a portfolio of London property.

When a wealthy businessman invests in a business start up it is rarely to help the man without a pot to piss in. They will definately not be 50/50 partners no matter what is said in public. I know of business men who are very successful and the more sucess they have the tighter they turn the screw - they know the value of a pound no matter who was in their kids school.

School pissed me off, I packed it in at 14 to race motorbikes.
Some aspects of school I enjoyed, I liked Design Technology until I got banned from using the power tools, I enjoyed PE and Art, I liked history too, greek and egyptian mythology etc. I despised English, Maths and Science, RE was the most pointless thing ever I got a weeks worth of detention for drawing jesus bleeding to death on a crucifix, geography was shit, cooking was shit, I got in trouble for saying "I'm not cooking, I'm not a woman" but yeah school in general was miserable.

At the risk of being given the nickname 'Vicar,' did you point out to your teacher that Jesus did indeed bleed to death on crucifix according to the bible.banjo wrote:I got a weeks worth of detention for drawing jesus bleeding to death on a crucifix.

Even in the poor to middling fee paying schools capital is accumulated that allows attendees to at least maintain their position on the social ladder. So perhaps Henry's dad isn't going to get you an internship at Goldman Sachs, but Rupert's uncle's looking for a "good egg" to do a bit of filing at his high street solicitors firm. Ten years down the line these kids are the country's middle managers.mercman wrote:However, the attempt to buy social advantage only works with elite private schools, those with a really creamy, uber-rich, well-connected intake. With the middle and lower tier of private schooling parents are breaking themselves to buy their kids a fairly average education alongside the children of plumbers, pub landlords and corner shop owners made good. They are led to believe that paying fees will buy success but in most private schools the 'return on investment' is negligible and, in some cases, negative. Essentially they are wasting their money, being sold a pup.

In my German class, we used to have to pretend we were writing letters to a German penfriend quite often, to test our written German skills. Mine was called Adolf. That didn't go down well.banjo wrote:School pissed me off, I packed it in at 14 to race motorbikes.

My German teach has gone; "Why is your penfriend always called Adolf?" I said; "I thought it was supposed to be the same penfriend every time." She blabbed on about the name Adolf having negative connotations, which I thought was harsh. Was she implying everybody called Adolf was like Hitler? Anyway, I shrugged and said I didn't know any other German names, so was told my pen-friend, who didn't exist, had to be called Klaus.

I hated teachers, they had no concept of my own importance. "Have you done this page from the text book?" No "WHY NOT?" because I don't want to so fornicate off. I think my parents spent more time at my school than I did they were dragged in that much.
Re: Danny Williams Loses AGAIN - Worst One Yet
Yeah, I think it's made me who I am and I like who I am. But a lot of my friends now I'm older didn't do the silly stuff I did at school or hang out with the sort of people that I did and are just as well rounded and are good people. I don't think hanging out with criminals when they were younger would have made them better people than they are.palooka wrote:clopixolacuphase wrote: I would not like my children to be the proper little prat that I was.[/quote]
Though being such a 'prat' has caused you grief and angst hasn't it also given you a particular view of life? There are people who do' everything' the 'right' way and life is good and easy for them. They, (from experience) have no understanding of how life can be and have little emapthy for others less able or fortunate though.

I'm 41 and can remember very little of my school days, i've no idea why really. I seem to recall my middle school days from age 9-13, which probably had more to do with the bully and pervert teachers than anything else.
High School from age 13-16 i can remember very little, i cannot recall my form teachers names from that time, I do remember i was a bit of a idiot with bad behavior records etc, but all of my friends were as well. I can recall all the stupid things we got up to quite well.
Left School 6 months before my exams, and they let me back to sit some. That i do remember. Unsurprisingly i failed them all.
I don't blame the school systems at all, i was an idiot and thats why i'm now a lowly civil servant doing boring work.
But my 20's were marvellous and not being careered minded i managed to travel the world a couple of times and not worry if i was doing any damage to my 'career' .
Life has been very good.
This has little to do with the public/priivate debate on here, but just sat here trying to remember my teachers names

Maybe it's different there, but the education at private schools were I'm from is way better than that of public schools. It's like everything else you buy in life, you get what you pay for. Not everything is a rich, elitist, capitalist conspiracy against the poor, which you seem to believemercman wrote:Essentially private schooling is about trying to buy connections - or social and cultural capital as the French sociologist Bourdieu would call it. going back to the "noble act" that i said danny was undertaking - it is a noble act despite the rights or wrongs of it. williams believes his children would benefit from his going into the ring and risking his health to earn enough to send them to a public school. he may be right he may be wrong but it is "noble" if he believes it is. just like the many german soldiers in WW2 who fought bravely and gave away their lives for a corrupt and fetid organisation like the nazi party.

no! a school you pay for your child to go to is called a "public school" - a few of my mates went to public school and their parents had to pay shitloads of money to do so. its just one of those anomalies of our language..public schols are not really for the general public..unless they want to pay
Re: Danny Williams Loses AGAIN - Worst One Yet
Firstly, taxpayers do indeed pay for their children's education. Anyway, mercman is right - it's not like that over here. A lot of publicly-funded education is of far better quality than that offered in the private sector. Not 'everything' is what you describe...just a big chunk of it.thunderfromdownunder wrote: Maybe it's different there, but the education at private schools were I'm from is way better than that of public schools. Yes, but in other countries, 'public' school means just that. In the UK, the most private of private schools are called public schools. Taking the p1ss if you ask me. Typical.misterpunch wrote:no! a school you pay for your child to go to is called a "public school" - a few of my mates went to public school and their parents had to pay shitloads of money to do so. its just one of those anomalies of our language..public schols are not really for the general public..unless they want to pay

schools in many commonwealth countries follow the PUBLIC SCHOOL definition i outlined above. but outside that area you are right PUBLIC MEANS PUBLIC - i really hope we do not get posts trying to sort out the definition between public and private schools in the uk because it is very boring

It's no so much a conspiracy as just plain obvious: a capitalist society systematically advantages the rich at the expense of the poor, and the independent school sector, especially the elite public schools, are an integral part of maintaining and promoting inequality. It's just the way it is. Some people approve of this, and they are perfectly within their rights to believe inequality is desirable. I, on the other hand, believe we should work towards a more just society - and no, I'm not a mad extremist who wants to overthrow capitalism or a hopeless romantic who thinks the meek will inheret the earth. I simply prefer social and economic policies which attempt to reduce inequality to the extreme neo-liberal version of capitalism being promoted in the UK today.
Fair enough. I could never get into the whole left wing classism (sp) thing, even though I came from a single parent household and grew up in a small government house, a lot of it just seems like people are just making excuses in advance as for why they done nothing with their lives. I do however have a lot of respect for the more old school leftie trade union types who done a lot for working folks like myself, as far as making a decent wage and what not goes. Anyway back to Danny Williams, I always liked him, but he needs to retire probabaly more than any other active fighter. He is a walking time bomb. How can he keep getting licenced? Seems like madness
