Skysports : Opinions On Coverage Tarver vs Jones.....
Adverts in between rounds !!!!
The commentators are boring
Their volume levels are crap as well, WELL DONE for drowning out the atmosphere with the boring commentators. Round 5 seemed a hell of a lot more exciting on the HBO broadcast than skys because we get to hear the crowd going wild which has an effect on the viewer.
Just my 2 pence

On the fight itself, Jones is shot and should retire. Well I say shot, he is still world class but not 50% the fighter he once was. Reminded me tonight like Shane Moseley, now just an averagely fast world class fighter with leg movement of a similar standard to Tarver - I am still adamant that 3 years ago this fight would have been a forgone conclusion and I still give Clinton a good chance with Antionio.
BUT, Roy needed this fight to cement his legacy, whilst a losing effort it answered so many questions that needed to be answered. Did Jones have fighting spirit - to true, that 11th round showed the he had balls the size of coconuts. That was reminsend of Round 3 of Ward vs Gatti II. His first fight with Tarver answered the question if he had the bottle to pull a result from out of the back, when he won the last 3 rounds of the first fight (he needed them).
Punch resistance has never been a doubt for me (look at BM's pictures of Jones vs Ruiz!), however he answered his critics here again. Most expected a TKO finish and although wobbled on a few occasion, he took some bombs.
In many ways, the first and third Tarver match has ENCHANCED Roy's legacy far greater than others, cause we all know he cannot do what he used to do - but shown he had other necessary tools (like Heart, a chin, bottle, the ability to slug) that he had never needed.
Now lets hope he has sense and retires, I am glad he gave it ago - I will say with pride that one of the ten greatest fighters of all time was around during my time and it was a priveldge to see him box on the TV.

I don't like Adam Smith at all, he's the real life alan partridge, those who used to watch the day today will know what I'm on about "Twat! That was liquid football", "Arms like huge muscley....legs", "Viewing them from above they look like cattle in a mad way, but cattle on bikes" etc. And McCrory just agrees with everything the lead commentator says most of the time even if it's blatantly stupid.
It did sound like they were commentating to a tape anyway, which can never be good.
I don't think Sky really have anybody all that great to do commentary; Darke is ok but very biased toward his favourites, Jim Watt knows his stuff but just points out every little error 'what he was doing during that hundredth of a second was wrong' type stuff.
I wish David Frost and Harry Carpenter were still in the game.

i don't think i've ever seen a fighter take so many flush shots. he wasn't taking the sting out of anything hardly.stujones wrote:A little less focus on Woods (which is understandable) and maybe they could have shown Campbell vs Kid Diamond whole - as impressive as Nate was, I have to say how much has Joel Casamayor slipped.
David Frost...
Only heard him during the US commentary of Ali vs Foreman, he cracked me up- so bias. He was practically wanking all the way through that fight. Every round Ali survived he was getting more and more excited.
Then of course came the end.
"Muhammad Ali has done it, the great man has done it, Ali has won by a knockdown" was is a slip of the tongue, no cause then he repeats the error "by a knockdown".
It reminded me of Rosenthal on the Hearns vs Duran fight.

I agree Stu, they went to Las Vegas about three times and Jim and Ian said more or less the same thing each time! I would have liked to see Campbell-Diamond in it's entirety. Diamond took a lot of punishment throughout the fight and especially in the final round, the commentators praised the ref for stopping the fight but i honestly believe the ref wanted to let it go on and Diamond's body language was crying out "I don't want to continue". On the subject of the commentary i usually like SKY but dislike Adam Smith, the whole feel cryed out to me that both men knew the result of the fight all along.stujones wrote:A little less focus on Woods (which is understandable) and maybe they could have shown Campbell vs Kid Diamond whole - as impressive as Nate was, I have to say how much has Joel Casamayor slipped.
I disagree, Jones didnt do much in the 11th, it may of appeared that he did alot but that would be because he did almost nothing in the rounds before it.stujones wrote:On the fight itself, Jones is shot and should retire. He answered his critics, we thought he would be too scared to mix it up, and that proved right.
Yeah, I can't stand Adam Smith either. He has a weak voice and every time he tries to inject passion into it just sounds embarrasing. he gives the distinct impression that he doesn't have the slightest clue about the sport....and I'll never forgive him for that Ringside episode where he laced up and tried to box - noone who's ever watched boxing with the slightest interest could look that pittifull, and that sticks with me.
anyhooo.....otherwise the coverage was decent, Im just glad when they show good boxing. They just need to completely revamp the commentary squad. get rid of Smith & Watt post haste.

I agree, Jones fought like he was scared stiff for most of the fight... ok he put in more of an effort in the 11th but so what, it was hardly Gatti stuff. Tarver showed what I always thought that a boxer with a decent jab and height could nulify Jones and that when push comes to shove Jones can't go to war to bring out a win. Anyone who can still compare Jones to the likes of Ray Robinson is dreaming I'm afraid.lvlarc_uk wrote:I disagree, Jones didnt do much in the 11th, it may of appeared that he did alot but that would be because he did almost nothing in the rounds before it.stujones wrote:On the fight itself, Jones is shot and should retire. I'll agree to disagree with Silkov and lvlarc uk on the 11th.
How he survived that round was unbelievable - he was gone, I said similar words Ward in the 3rd of the second Gatti fight.
I'm not looking at the fight as a whole, I thought (as Jones said) the whole fight was about Jones lasting the course and not retiring with a KO defeat. I thought from the minute of the introduction (even though I did know the result) that Jones didn't believe he was going to win.... However, whether you think that ruins his legacy (or damages it) is another thing. However, what I saw in the 11th was Roy's reaction when he was absolutely gone but no KD - and I was impressed. Just as I was impressed with how Ward withstood the 3rd to survive the round and survive the fight. Jones' reaction untill he recovered was knockout or be knocked out. I was impressed with Jones' spirit in that round, one thing he has never needed to show before last week because he has either been KO'd clean or not in serious danger of being stopped.

The way Jones tried to punch back through the storm and fight fire with fire was definately commendable, i gained a new respect for Jones during this fight, even though he knew he wasn't going to win (the showboating the constant smiling) he just wanted to go out on his feet and i think considering he was/is damaged goods he still gave the divisions number one problems and kept him thinking in there.
Thats what I was trying to say, that 11th round showed guts and spirit and signalled for me that a fighter like Nigel Benn would have to clean KO Jones to win, Jones (a shot Jones aswell) still looked dangerous in that round and I thought hurt Tarver a bit aswell in the 11th. Showed tremendous spirit in that round and as you said, I gained a new respect for that showing for Jones.steve689 wrote:The way Jones tried to punch back through the storm and fight fire with fire was definately commendable, i gained a new respect for Jones during this fight, even though he knew he wasn't going to win (the showboating the constant smiling) he just wanted to go out on his feet and i think considering he was/is damaged goods he still gave the divisions number one problems and kept him thinking in there.
I'll disagree with that, I thought it Tarver went for it but Roy did well to survive - perhaps Tarver punched himself out (his punch output is poor) but I don't think he let Roy off the hook in the 11th - when he stunned Roy he went to knock his block off.lvlarc_uk wrote:I dont think it showed guts or spirit, he only managed to stay in there because Tarver didn't press the aciton and take advantage.
Maybe he tried to stay in there just so he can have bigger pay days down the line and not be thought of as a complete shot fight, e.g Tyson
I seriously hope thats it from Roy, I think he set out what he originally planned on doing, that was to make a fairly decent account and last the course - cannot see him winning a version of any title now, not even heavyweight - although that would be his best bet.
