What World Champion was paid 2,600 skates, rather than money, for an exhibition he fought? And why?

I'm going to say Joe Louis was the fighter of which all the skates were presents for needy children.

Yes, it was Joe Louis. It was an exhibition in Sweden right after WWII, and it was illegal to transport money out of the country. So he was paid in skates, which Max Hyde of Cambridge, MA, USA, sold in a matter of a few hours. March 26, 1948 TACOMA NEWS TRIBUNE AP wire report.
