Any changes to your new years training regimen...

Post by EddieShredder »

I know most people who frequent this side of the forum are already seriously into their training and know their stuff - so likely to be little changes in peoples routines etc... but is anyone changing anything major?

Me personally - carrying on with Crossfit and BJJ as I have done for a long time now. I'm still having to restrict what I'm doing a fair bit due to shoulder problems, so my new years training resolution is to stretch much more, do dislocates every day - as while I know the problem, I also know stretching and working on my posture will help my shoulders considerably, and that's something i've neglected.

Other than that... i'm fully paleo at the moment, and am not finding it too bad. That said, I am doing things like "paleo brownies" etc which as friends have pointed out are technically cheating - however the ingredients are ok. Not sure if i'll stick with it for good... but I will give it a month or two to see how my system responds to an entirely gluten/grain/sugar (refined) free diet.

I will keep my strength and cardio routines (rowing, running, boxing, gymnastics, kettlebells) the same. I will keep Paleo going as well. And like you, the one thing I've been trying to add but neglect the most is yoga....so will try to be diligent about keeping that up.

I'm getting a new routine next week, as I do every six weeks or so, but it will be a progression rather than 'new' as such. What I have done myself is committed to quarterly goals, which for Q1 are:

Be able to perform full, unassisted pistol squats (I've already been working on progressions)
Hold a handstand for at least 10 seconds
Hit a sub-6 minute mile
Manage a minimum 15 dead-hang pull-ups (full extension)

The first two would represent brand new achievements. The latter two involve getting back to previous benchmarks.

I'm also determined to take part in this in May: http://www.ratracedirtyweekend.com/info/

A few changes to my gym routine this year, changing up my gym split and also nutrition.
Im doing cardio every morning and evening now.

Monday - Back widening and Biceps.

Tuesday - Shoulders and abs.

Wednesday - Rest from weights, but still doing my cardio in the morning and evening.

Thursday - Legs and Back thickening.

Friday - Chest and triceps.

Saturday - Road run/Boxing in the evening.

Sunday - Morning run/rest.

Hopefully this year the cardio on my rest days will make a massive difference.

Would love to be able to commit to getting better quality rest, but realistically I know its never going to happen. With two kids, busy job and full training regime I rarely get enough sleep.

Now when I do dumbell bench, I roll off sideways to my knees and then try to stand up.

So...4 months in...how are we doing??

I'm down from 175/180 to between 166-168 depending on when I weigh myself. Been eating super low carb, intermittent fasting most days and doing more high intensity interval training. I'm going to get into single digit body fat and then put on a bit more muscle.... Keep getting after it, gents... :TU:

Having a great year thus far, started a new regime, well... a regime on Oct 22nd and was 16 stone (224lbs) - now I'm under 14 (193lbs).

I do the Stronglifts 5x5 program with a few additions and all my compound exercises weight are way higher than when I started. Squats are my favourite, I could barely do 30kg when I started and I can now squat 90KG, all the way down too.

Feeling real good about/with myself.
