Ricky Burns v Scott Harrison

Post by Alba »

Seen this in Sun yesterday , fight makes financial sense as it would put bums on seat, but think burns take's it quite easy to be honest . Bu

GLASGOW’S newest sports arena is set to host a sensational boxing showdown between Ricky Burns and Scott Harrison this summer.
Promoter Alex Morrison plans to stage the biggest fight in Scotland since Jim Watt was world champion more than 30 years ago.
He has booked the Emirates Arena in the east end of the city for a June clash of the Scottish titans.
If it comes off, it will mark a stunning second ring comeback for former WBO featherweight champ Harrison.
A clash with world lightweight champ Burns would hand the 35-year-old one last chance to resurrect his career.
Morrison manages both boxers and believes the bout CAN happen in front of a certain 7,000 sell-out crowd.
But first 29-year-old Coatbridge ace Burns must make a successful third defence of his WBO crown against Mexican Miguel Vazquez in London next month.
And Harrison, sentenced in his absence to a four-year jail term in Spain on assault charges and who appeared in court twice in a week last month, would have to stay out of trouble.
But Morrison said: “This is the fight I want to make happen and hopefully it will come off because I believe it would prove a huge attraction.
“I looked at several venues before deciding to provisionally book the Emirates.
“Scott’s been working hard in training and I’d thought of featuring him on my show at the Gorbals Leisure Centre this weekend.
“But while he is ready to fight again, he wanted something better and they don’t come any bigger than a world title bout.
“And if Ricky comes through what will be a tough fight against Vazquez and Scott continues to progress, Burns- Harrison will happen.
“This may well be the incentive Scott needs. I’m not worried about him misbehaving again now that he has something positive to look forward to.
“I am still supporting Scott. Although he has been the architect of his own downfall to an extent, I also believe he’s unlucky.”
Morrison also vowed to oppose any attempt to strip Harrison of his licence.
Harrison silenced his critics when he made a successful comeback after almost seven years out of the ring against Hungarian Gyorgy Mizsei at the Kelvin Hall last June.
He followed that up with a comprehensive points win over Joe Elfidh in September.
That took his record to 27-2-2, including nine world title wins.
Meanwhile, Burns was named the Scottish Ex-Boxers Association’s Boxer of the Year for an unprecedented second time yesterday and received his award from former lightweight ring king Ken Buchanan.

"Harrison silenced his critics"?

Erm, no.

The suggestion is positively ghoulish.

jesus, Harrison would be slaughtered. The wear and tear that body has been through means any aspirations of a ring return, have to be taken with a pinch of salt, Harrison will never be even half the fighter he was - relied so much of his physicality in his prime, and that physicality is gone.

No point to this fight whatsoever, no disrepect to Harrison, Burns is at world level and would be wasting his time.

Terrible fight. Burns would stop him early. Waste of time aswell. I doubt 7000 people would pay to see the fight aswell. Much better fights were mentioned above.

Initially I was scathing,

But the more I think about it, the more I think it's a ruse for the courts, to abstain from jailing him if he has a 'world title fight' lined up to provide for his family blah blah.

Because nobody wants this fights apart business men. Certainly not the majority of boxing fans, because Scott does not merit it.

In comparison to the Filipino taxi driver, Scott is a better opponent - but now Broner / HBO offers are floating around, it would be reputation suicide for Ricky to do this bout and duck Broner in 2013.

It could have possibly been acceptable last year, but not now.

I actually consider it embarassing that Morrison is saying that even if Burns beats Vazquez, massively elevating his status, he will fight Harrison next. That is insanity that in no way progresses Burns's career.

I guess it's cash out time already for Harrison, with his chin he'll be taking an absolute kicking in there

I have little doubt this would sell out up here. Harrison is a good ticket seller and to be honest there are a good number of people who would pay well to see him take a beating, whether you or I agree with that or not.

It's a pointless fight in the sense that it doesn't improve Burn's standing to the purist but he'll make good money from this for an easy night's work.

If Bogere beats Abril then I think June will see Broner v Bogere in Vegas, Harrison v Burns in Glasgow and then Burns v Broner on the September 7th/14th card at the MGM as the main support to Mayweather v Alvarez.

Burns would probably make more vs Harrison than against Vasquez - madness but probably true!

It's not a given Burns beats Vasquez. That is a very tough fight; Vasquez is a very crafty boxer. Harrison looks to be cashing out; last I heard he has hit the bottle again which is a massive shame. At featherweight he was a beast and very a much a "value" fighter.

Ricky Burns has never beat a top fighter, kevin mitchell got knocked out by kastidas, he is not world class, I still think Harrison would knock Ricky out, has a far harder punch, and a better boxing brain, and a granite chin. Burns would rather fight british class fighters like Mitchell who has never won a fight at elite level that harrison who has had 10 world title fights, 8 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss in that. Yes a long time ago granted, but he's at least had success on that stage, so is it not better to fight someone who has proven at that level or someone who never has ? And remember Harrison never lost title in ring.

This is a joke fights......who next after this Alex Arthur??? Absolutely shocking how they did everthing in there power to dodge Broner but at the same time Billy graham and the rest of his team is saying how they would beat him when they never had any intention of actually fighting him. Alway said the broner fight would never happen due to burns not fancying it and not its happened. No way is broner going to move down to 135 after moving upto 147 for the Malignaggi fight. The fight is offically dead soley due to burns. Not having it that its burns team who didnt want it and not burns. If burns really wanted it he could have got it as at the end of the day his team works for him and he could tell them what he wants. Bottom line is hes had 3 chances to fight broner and turned them all down. Now we are left with this. Sad thing is they will probaby spin it as a bigger fight than burns vs broner.

I thought Scott Harrison was sentenced to further jail time. What happened with that?
