Irish parents, born and raised in Birmingham, spent a lot of time in Ireland when he was young, boxed for Irish titles and considers himself Irish which he has the right to do. It's not up to someone else to decide a person's nationality.

You end off.

If both your parents are dead, does that mean you're dead? If both your parents are black, does that mean you're black? If both your parents are Newcastle fans, are you a complete and utter bastard?

Seriously though, if the lad regards himself as Irish given the background Deno states, that's up to him I would have thought...

There is a huge Irish community in Birmingham. He is Irish and a Brummie. You can be both simultaneously.

His nationality has been debated here before. It never has a happy ending

Your nationality is where you are born if your born in Ireland then your Irish , if your born in England then your English , doesn't matter where your parents are from, check his passport..

Only in a legal sense, and only in countries in which nationality as a legal term is defined as such. Nationality is also used so express subjective identification with a group, in which case Macklin could consider himself Irish despite being born in England.

What? That's ridiculous. You're trying to say that one half of a country is owned by the Queen and the other half isn't? Pull the other one. If that was the case it would surely cause all sorts of Troubles.

If Macklin considers himself irish with the background he has fair enough. My sister has exactly the same background and considers herself irish. She moved over to ireland 6 years ago at 22 and would never come back, no regrets absolutely loves the place. I on the other hand consider myself english, love the irish people but don't feel any connection to the place, always feel like a visitor.

The fake irish accent from Macklin is poor though. I grew up as part of an irish catholic community in Coventry and the amount of times i heard lads the same age as me, who were born and raised in Cov, affecting an 'oirish' lilt after a few jars was shameful, doubley so when they began expressing anti-english sentiments. Not suggesting Macklin does that, just a bugbear of mine.

Jayyyyyyyyyysus I'm loathed to get involved here, but a moth to the flame and all that.

Macklin is an Irish citizen, holds an Irish passport and considers himself Irish. Not sure why that has pissed people off here so much over the years but that's his choice.

Maybe British boxing fans only like fighters when they drape themselves in Union Jacks?

What I do love is when British fans think that the only reason a British born fighter might consider themselves in any way Irish is to sell tickets - the sheer arrogance of that train of thought is simply astounding. In fact I think it hurts a fighters marketability in the UK if they display any flags or symbols on their attire other than solely the UJ.

Personally I find it more weird that you have two Irish parents and a sister that lives there but feel no connection with the place. Not knocking you for it, each to their own but I find that odd. Saying that I knew a family in London back in the days, two Irish parents, the daughter would only be with Irish lads and considered herself Irish and the son was a raving BNP member. It takes all sorts.

As for Macklin's Irish accent, personally all I hear is a Brum accent. A couple of world have a tiny hint of Irish to them but what would you expect from a lad with two Paddy rents and spent so much time in Ireland. I never hear anyone having a go at Khan for having a hint of an Asain accent or black londoners talking like they stepped out of the Yard!

Personally I see where Binipop is coming from, I was raised by my Irish single mother and I feel no particular affinity to Ireland, nothing more so than here anyway. I'm not really nationalistic at all personally, and I usually find anyone whose personality is defined by where they come from is pretty dull.

I'm surprised you can't hear the accent thing, he used to have a thick Brummie accent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_WkmUtlJb4 and now seems to affecting an Irish accent as seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j3mWoP0rSY They are completely different to my ears. I think you're being intentionally naive dismissing the idea he's doing it to sell tickets as arrogance, I can't see any other reason for changing your accent, other than to try to build a following among Irish Americans while he's based over there, not that there is anything wrong with that at all. I just find it amusing.

Sometimes mate the accent changes depending on who you are around at the time. I live in London now but I'm originally from up north (Lancashire). My Lancashire accent has mellowed somewhat since living in London and some people even think I am from London. But if I go back to Lancashire for a prolonged period my strong northern accent seems to come flooding back!
