Boxing Matches in Prisons ?

Reading through boxing monthly it came up that Dwight Muhammad Qawi had fought James Scott in a boxing match held in the prison which Scott was in.

Just out of pure interest, does anyone have more info/articles on these sort of events i.e does stuff like this still happen, now, were other inmates at ringside watching, was the general public allowed in, was this a sanctioned fight i.e WBA WBC etc, how the fight was financed etc

Just find it real interesting that a man convicted of murder (who had been put way for peoples safety) was still able to fight.

Looking at the records on BOXREC Scott had a few fights (boxing matches) in prison.

I am sure that I have read that Bernard Hopkins boxed whilst he was inside (maybe even started boxing in prison ?).

These weren't official pro fights though, but more prison championship type stuff.

Interesting topic though - it would be good to hear more.

British Light Heavy Champion Bunny Johnson fought Scott in Rahway State Prison, Johnson took the fight on 10 days notice, and was just over powered by Scott who made Johnson retire after 7 rounds. The fight was televised on NBC i think, and as with Scotts other fights behind bars it had the interest in it, but after losing to Qwai i think the TV company walked away, the lose to Jerry Martin was an upset and Scott wasn't the same fighter against Qwai. That might of had something to do with Qwai being one of the hardest men to of put on gloves.

Qwai himself had been in prison for armed robbery , he was convicted as a 19 year old, and it was in prison that he learnt how to box correctly . He had been a fighter on the outside but didn't know how to box.
He had his first pro fight only a month after being released from prison, and had no amateur experience, less than 3 years later he was world champion.

In some American jails they have a boxing program, this has been running for years and has produced quite a few Champions and contenders. Bernard Hopkins being a prime example.

It's an American thing that comes and goes depending on the fancies of the incumbent State Governors and the other typical political shit. Another two names of many who got going in prison are, as a participant, Ron Lyle and, as a non-participant, referee Eddie Cotton.

Young, aggressive men need an outlet for their hormonal whims. When women are unavailable, get them in the gym, load them up with stodgy foot, actively encourage masturbation, give them a TV with sports, and encourage religious study. It takes the edge off and reduces the likelihood of them not sticking to the rules of the institution.

Lots of US prisons have boxing 'programmes' as far as I know. Hopkins was definitely a prison champ, as was Liston I believe, probably a few more.

(Gaols for old english dicks or locked down for you Yankie dicks) isn't it fought will sedatives in the food and stuff like that ... I know you can get the best drugs available in the clink, I sometimes thoght after a curry and rice I couldn't move and only slept till the next day
