Ezzard Charles
Where is the love for this man? Arguably the most underated and unappreciated heavyweight champion in history. He's also one of the few ATG's on this forum that almost never gets a mention, or when he does it's as a passing foot note. Let's break down the stats, shall we?
-The greatest light heavyweight BAR NONE, title or no title, having beaten the likes of the following:
Lloyd Marshall, Jimmy Bivins, Archie Moore, Oakland Billy Smith, Charley Burley (@ middleweight), and even was robbed against Elmer Ray one of the most feared heavyweights of the era when he was barely a light heavyweight, etc.
-Become heavyweight champion and defended it against the following:
Lee Oma, Pat Valentino, Joe Louis, Jersey Joe Walcott (2x's), Joey Maxim, Nick Barone, Gus Lesnevich, Freddie Bashore
Following his reign as heavyweight champion, he defeated the likes of Rex Layne, Cesar Brion, Tommy Harrison, Coley Wallace, Bob Satterfield, challenged Marciano for the championship twice, Charley Norkus.... after that he was washed up completely winning 9 times and losing 13 times.
This man was absolutely phenomenal from 160 to 176 (bare minimum then for a heavyweight). Today he would be a cruiserweight and would make mince meat out of the likes of champions who have held that title in the last ten years.

Great fighter but underrated? On this forum? Maybe outside of boxrec, but when the topic comes up, he's almost universally recognized as the best light heavy ever. Dunno how that makes him underrated

Re: Ezzard Charles
I guess I should have been more specific in my rant. I think Charles is sometimes taken for granted and gets overlooked on this forum because of his greatness (as a light heavyweight and p4p), but as a heavyweight he gets almost no credit. As a matter of fact the BoxRec all-time rankings doesnt even rank Charles among the heavyweights. Thoughts on Charles as a heavyweight?

Re: Ezzard Charles
The Boxrec all time rankings are a joke, but they only rank fighters in one division. Ezzard is a bit underrated at heavyweight. I'd rate him between 11-15. Right there with Dempsey.
Re: Ezzard Charles
Exactly, those rankings are a farce. Have no idea why anyone complains or even cares about them.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:The Boxrec all time rankings are a joke, but they only rank fighters in one division. Ezzard is a bit underrated at heavyweight. I'd rate him between 11-15. Right there with Dempsey.

In CS there is a man who demands Adrien Broner is more talented than Ezzard was.

Beat me to it, was just gonna say " he was a good boxer in his own time, but he's no Broner, and that's a no brainer".SaadOffTheDeck wrote:In CS there is a man who demands Adrien Broner is more talented than Ezzard was.
